111th Anniversary - My Actifit Report Card: August 13th, 2026

It was a pretty warm Thursday morning. Starting today, it’s supposed to get very warm again. Today’s interval walking route took me around the Schleusenland area, including the castle park. And now I also know what the number 111—woven into the fences several times—in the Schleusenland allotment garden colony means. The colony is celebrating its 111th anniversary this year. Happy 111th birthday! Apparently, they’ll be celebrating this in some way over the next few days, because colorful pennant garlands now hang along the entire fence, along with photos of the fruits and plants from the gardens—alternating with drawings accompanied by short stories about the colony. For example, there’s the story that the land in front of the gardens once belonged to the royal horses, whose stables were located there, and that horseshoes are still found in the ground from time to time today, or that raccoons like to eat the cherry harvest right off the trees, or that in the past, almost every garden had a pond and frogs, and frog concerts were a common occurrence. You can also learn a bit about the history there. Namely, that during the notorious “turnip winter” of 1916–17, when food was scarce, the gardens were converted from ornamental gardens to farmland to feed the people, saving thousands from starvation. Before heading back, I took a few deep breaths at the large lock weir—which, by the way, the gardeners call the “Niagara Falls of Charlottenburg”—and let the sound of the water wash away my worries as I meditated.
Ein recht warmer Donnerstagmorgen. Ab heute soll es wieder sehr warm werden. Die Schleusenlandrunde inklusive Schloßpark war heute im Intervall-Walking dran. Und jetzt weiß ich auch, was die mehrfach in die Zäune geflochtene 111 in der Schleusenland-Kleingartenkolonie zu bedeuten hat. Die Kolonie feiert in diesem Jahr nämlich 111-jähriges Bestehen. Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum 111. Geburtstag. Scheinbar wird das die Tage irgendwie gefeiert, denn am gesamten Zaun entlang hängen jetzt bunte Wimpelgirlanden und auch Fotos von den Früchten und Pflanzen aus den Gärten und im Wechsel dazu auch Zeichnungen mit kurzen Geschichten über die Kolonie, wie zum Beispiel die, dass das Gelände vor den Gärten den königlichen Pferden gehörte, deren Stallungen sich dort befanden, und heute immer noch hin und wieder Hufeisen im Boden gefunden werden, oder dass die Waschbären gerne die Kirschernte vom Baum fressen oder dass früher fast jeder Garten einen Teich und Frösche hatte und Froschkonzerte gang und gäbe waren. Auch etwas über die Geschichte erfährt man dort. Nämlich dass die Gärten zur Nahrungsmittelknappheit im berüchtigten „Steckrübenwinter“ 1916/17 zur Versorgung der Menschen von Ziergärten zu Nutzflächen umfunktioniert wurden und tausende Menschen vor dem Verhungern retteten. Bevor ich mich auf den Rückweg gemacht habe, genoss ich am großen Schleusenwehr, was von den Gartenleuten übrigens die Niagarafälle von Charlottenburg genannt wird, noch ein paar tiefe Atemzüge und ließ mir meditierend vom Wasser den Kopf freirauschen.
