Francisco de Paula Aristiguieta: A Square in Plain Sight. We continue our tour of the historical and cultural sites of our beautiful Cumana. On this occasion, we stopped at a plaza that was originally designated as a recreational park in honor of the illustrious Cumana native Francisco de Paula Aristiguieta. Most people probably don’t know who this figure is; however, he was an important politician and businessman in the region—so much so that, together with his brother, he founded the Company Industrial Fishing Corporation, or as we all know it, the famous CAIP. We deeply regret that this company has closed its doors and that today, its facilities have fallen into ruins.
Now, back in the day, the plaza in question was quite popular with both local residents and visitors. But since everything gradually falls into disrepair, it has become a place where everyone passes through but rarely stops to enjoy it. For the most part, we hear the hubbub of students early in the morning, at noon, and in the late afternoon, since La Inmaculada School is located right across the street. Now, it’s true that these are spaces that can be put to good use for tourism, and thank God, the community came together some time ago to develop a restoration project, which has happily been approved. This is wonderful, because work will begin shortly, and we’ll once again experience the joys of days gone by. For now, let’s get to know this place, and if you happen to pass by, don’t be one of those people who just look at it—stay a while, because despite everything, you can breathe in peace and harmony here under its large trees.

This plaza covers about one block, because right across from us are the Inmaculada School and the Caiguire Daycare Center; yes, sir, it’s quite large and has two distinct areas. It’s located on Gran Mariscal Avenue, between the Valentin Valiente Parish Office and the Caiguire Roundabout. If we go via the roundabout, we’ll find the more open area, with the majestic Pan de Azúcar Hill in the background.
We found the area dedicated to Francisco de Paula; there, you can see the pedestal where the bust of this native of Cumana once stood. It features a granite walkway and steps that allow visitors to get closer and view the statue that once stood there. I understand that the structure is being kept safe by community representatives and will be reinstalled once the restoration work is complete. It features walkways with very distinctive shapes, surrounded by yellow curbs. Although the vegetation consists mainly of large trees, it’s true that the lower areas lack vegetation somewhat.
Continuing our walk, we notice some circular planters with small trees and slightly worn grass. We point out when everything is in order, but we also have to mention when something needs maintenance. What’s certain is that the Christmas nativity figures were left behind in the planters, hehehehe. But anyway, we keep enjoying ourselves, and I’d like to show you the beauty of the coconut trees in the square a truly spectacular sight that lets the sun’s rays filter through a bit. Beauty truly lies in the vegetation, the sun, and the blue sky, which stretches over the entire plaza and the whole city.
As I mentioned at the beginning, the plaza has two areas, and in the center of it there is a completely open space where many community and family activities and events take place. It’s true that it isn’t very crowded, but during these events we always see people’s enthusiasm. On the other hand, there’s always someone sitting on the benches. If we look at the views from both areas, we can see the open section of the square.
In the second part of the route, the vegetation is more abundant, and we can see a greater number of large trees. There are more people here—not as many as we’d like, but there are some. We can even see banana plantations. Francisco de Paula Aristiguieta: Una Plaza a la Vista de Todos. Continuamos con nuestro recorrido por los sitios históricos y culturales de nuestra hermosa Cumaná. En esta oportunidad; hicimos un alto en una plaza, que en un principio fue bautizada como parque recreativo en honor al ilustre Cumanés Francisco de Paula Aristiguieta. Lo más seguro es que muchos no sepan quien es este personaje; sin embargo, fue un importante político y empresario de la región; tanto así, que en conjunto con su hermano fue fundador de la Empresa Compañía Anónima Industrial de Pesca, o como todos la conocemos como la famosa CAIP. Empresa que lamentamos mucho haya cerrado sus puertas y que hoy en día, sus instalaciones se han convertido en meros escombros.
Ahora; en su tiempo la Plaza en cuestión estuvo bastante visitada por los habitantes de la región y por quienes nos visitan. Pero como todo poco a poco se va deteriorando; se ha vuelto un espacio por donde todos pasan, pero rara vez se quedan a disfrutarla. Mayormente, escuchamos la algarabía de los estudiantes a tempranas horas de la mañana; mediodía y final de la tarde, ya que en frente está ubicada la Unidad Educativa La inmaculada. Ahora; es cierto que son espacios que pueden ser aprovechados para el turismo y gracias a Dios, la comunidad hace algún tiempo se reunió para elaborar un proyecto de restauración, que felizmente ha sido aprobado. Esto es maravilloso, porque en poco tiempo se iniciarán los trabajos y se volverán a experimentar aquellas alegrías de antaño; por lo pronto, vamos a conocerla y si pasas por allí, no seas de esos que solo la miran; puedes quedarte un rato, porque a pesar de todo, aquí se respira paz y armonía bajo sus grandes árboles.
Portada Editada en CanvaIniciamos el recorrido y les cuento que esta plaza ocupa aproximadamente una cuadra, porque al frente tenemos la Escuela la Inmaculada y la Casa Cuna Caiguire; sí señor, es bastante grande y cuenta con dos ambientes. Está ubicada en la avenida Gran Mariscal, entre la Prefectura de la parroquia Valentín Valiente y la Redoma Caiguire. Si vamos vía la redoma; nos encontramos con el ambiente que está más despejado, teniendo de fondo el majestuoso cerro pan de azúcar.
Encontramos la zona donde se hace honor a Francisco de Paula; porque allí se visualiza el pedestal donde se encontraba el busto de este Cumanés. Tiene una caminería de granito y unos peldaños para estar más cerca y observar la imagen que en algún momento estuvo allí. Tengo conocimiento que la estructura está guardada por los representantes de la comunidad y será colocada al culminar los trabajos de restauración. Posee caminerías con formas muy peculiares, rodeadas de brocales en color amarillo. Aunque su vegetación principalmente se basa en grandes árboles; es cierto que los espacios bajos carecen un poco de ella.
Continuando el paseo; y nos damos cuenta que existen jardineras en forma circular, que cuentan con pequeños árboles y engramado un poco deteriodado. Decimos cuando todo está en orden; pero también tenemos que decir cuando a algo le hace falta mantenimiento. Lo que si es cierto, es que en las jardineras dejaron olvidadas las figuras del nacimiento navideño, jejejeje. Pero bueno; seguimos disfrutando y te presento la hermosura de los árboles de coco que están dentro de la plaza; un total espectáculo que deja cruzar un poco los rayos solares, de verdad que la belleza también está en la vegetación, el sol y el cielo azul, este último cubre toda la plaza y la ciudad entera.
Como hice mención al inicio; la plaza cuenta con dos espacios y en el centro de ella, existe un ambiente totalmente descubierto donde se realizan muchas actividades y eventos de índole comunal y familiar. Es cierto que no es muy visitada; pero durante estos eventos siempre vemos el entusiasmo de las personas. Por otro lado, nunca falta alguien que esté sentado en sus bancos. Si notamos las vistas de ambos espacios; nos damos cuenta de la zona descubierta de la plaza.
En la segunda parte de la misma, la vegetación es más abundante y tenemos a la vista mayor presencia de árboles de gran tamaño. Aquí existe más afluencia de personas, no tanto como se quisiera, pero si las hay. Hasta plantaciones de cambur tenemos a la vista. Bueno amigos; hemos culminado este recorrido y esperamos que pronto inicien los trabajos de restauración, para mostrarles en un futuro la otra cara de la Plaza Francisco de Paula Aristiguieta; saludos y nos vemos pronto con más lugares que conocer.
