Krakow's churches no.27 – Church of St. Joseph in Krakow

In Krakow, on Poselska Street, although close to the city center, it is a bit off to the side, behind a high wall, there is a small, very inconspicuous church.
The Sanctuary of St. Joseph at the Bernardine Sisters' Convent, located on Krakowskie Street, is not only a space for prayer and contemplation, but also a testimony to the turbulent history of the city and the craftsmanship of Baroque architecture.
The history of the temple dates back to the 17th century, when construction of a new temple began on the ruins of the former Tęczyński (later Opaliński) palace. Work lasted from 1694 to 1702, and a year later, on September 23, 1703, the Bishop of Krakow Kazimierz Łubieński consecrated the church. In 1850, the temple suffered serious damage in the great fire of Krakow. The roof burned down, the bells melted in the fire, but they did not give up, because the reconstruction began the very next day after the fire and the roof was ready before winter.

The church was built in the Baroque style, on a rectangular plan, with one nave and a facade facing west. What catches the eye from the first glance is the late Baroque main altar, which adjoins the southern wall. Made of wood, painted in an almost black shade of blue-green, decorated with gilded columns and acanthus leaves - it looks monumental and very original. It is crowned by a carved, gilded Eye of Providence, surrounded by angels.

In the center of the altar there is a real treasure - a painting of St. Joseph with the Infant Jesus, famous for its graces, dated around 1600, made in the Mannerist style. Legend has it that this painting was given to Bishop Jakub Zadzik by Pope Urban VIII himself in 1627, with the recommendation to build a temple in honor of St. Joseph.
The interior of the church is also filled with four late Baroque side altars, placed under the windows of the main nave. An interesting fact is that some of them have a system of "double images" - on selected days of the year, the image in the central field is covered by another one, related to the celebrated holiday. Among the figures depicted, we can find, among others, St. Francis, St. Clare, St. Anthony, St. Agnes and St. Elizabeth of Hungary. In 1913, the interior of the church was enriched with polychromes by Jan Bukowski - a famous Krakow painter and decorator. Plant motifs, Eucharistic emblems, scenes from the life of St. Francis and choirs of angels give the church a unique atmosphere and emphasize the Franciscan spirit of the place.

W Krakowie na ulicy Poselskiej, mimo, że blisko ścisłego centru, to jednak troche na uboczu, za wysokim murem znajdue sie malutki bardzo niepozorny kościoł.
Sanktuarium św. Józefa przy klasztorze sióstr Bernardynek, zlokalizowane na krakowskim to nie tylko przestrzeń modlitwy i kontemplacji, ale też świadectwo burzliwej historii miasta i kunsztu barokowej architektury.
Historia świątyni sięga XVII wieku, kiedy to na ruinach dawnego pałacu Tęczyńskich (później Opalińskich) rozpoczęto budowę nowej świątyni. Prace trwały w latach 1694–1702, a już rok później, 23 września 1703 roku, biskup krakowski Kazimierz Łubieński dokonał konsekracji kościoła. W 1850 roku świątynia poważnie ucierpiała w wielkim pożarze Krakowa. Spłonął dach, dzwony stopiły się w ogniu, ale nie poddano się, bo juz kolejngo dnia po pożarze ruszyła odbudowa i jeszcze przed zimą dach był już gotowy.

Kościół zbudowany został w stylu barokowym, na planie prostokąta, z jedną nawą i fasadą skierowaną ku zachodowi. To, co przykuwa uwagę od pierwszego spojrzenia, to późnobarokowy ołtarz główny, który przylega do południowej ściany. Wykonany z drewna, pomalowany na niemal czarny odcień niebiesko-zielony, zdobiony złoconymi kolumnami i liśćmi akantu – prezentuje się monumentalnie i bardzo oryginalnie. Jego zwieńczeniem jest rzeźbione, złocone Oko Opatrzności, otoczone przez anioły.

W centrum ołtarza znajduje się prawdziwy skarb – łaskami słynący obraz św. Józefa z Dzieciątkiem Jezus, datowany na około 1600 rok, wykonany w stylu manierystycznym. Legenda głosi, że obraz ten został przekazany biskupowi Jakubowi Zadzikowi przez samego papieża Urbana VIII w 1627 roku, z zaleceniem wybudowania świątyni ku czci św. Józefa.
Wnętrze kościoła wypełniają także cztery późnobarokowe ołtarze boczne, umieszczone pod oknami nawy głównej. Ciekawostką jest to, że niektóre z nich posiadają system „podwójnych obrazów” – w wybranych dniach roku obraz w centralnym polu zostaje zasłonięty innym, związanym z obchodzonym świętem. Wśród przedstawionych postaci znajdziemy m.in. św. Franciszka, św. Klarę, św. Antoniego, św. Agnieszkę i św. Elżbietę Węgierską.
W 1913 roku wnętrze świątyni wzbogacono o polichromie autorstwa Jana Bukowskiego – znanego krakowskiego malarza i dekoratora. Motywy roślinne, emblematy eucharystyczne, sceny z życia św. Franciszka oraz chóry anielskie nadają kościołowi niepowtarzalny klimat i podkreślają franciszkańskiego ducha miejsca.
