Krakow's churches no.26 – Church of St. Anne in Krakow

_DSC7147.JPG

[ENG]
The more I walk and visit Krakow churches, the more I am convinced that this is Krakow's greatest treasure. Recently, after a series of slightly lesser-known churches, I decided to look into one of the most popular churches, the Church of St. Anne. It may seem inconspicuous from the outside, a bit hidden in the shadow of the Collegium Maius and the city noise, but inside? Full Baroque in its purest form, gold, frescoes, history radiating from the walls. Before this church took on its current Baroque appearance, at first, there was another Gothic church here from the end of the 14th century. It was built next to the St. Anne's Hospital, which was run by Academics of the Jagiellonian University. Finally, in the 17th century, a decision was made to demolish the Gothic church, which was in poor technical condition, and to build a new one on its ruins. In 1689, construction began on a new church in the Baroque style. It was designed by Tylman van Gameren, an Italian-Dutch architect who was a very popular architect at the time. The church was completed in 1703 and was immediately recognized as one of the most beautiful Baroque churches in Poland. And not without reason. From the outside, it may not be particularly impressive, although the facade with columns is quite impressive, but the real magic happens inside. As soon as you enter, you have the impression that you have entered a palace, not a church. The interior is spacious, with a huge dome above the main nave - it makes the greatest impression. If you look up, you will see frescoes by Karol Dankwart depicting angels and saints, staying among clouds, giving the impression that the roof of the church is leaky and you can see the sky looking at the ceiling. The main altar is full of sculptures, gilding, and in the center a painting of St. Anne Samotrić with Mary and baby Jesus.

Among the more interesting monuments located inside the church, it is worth mentioning the tombstone of Father Piotr Skarga, who was buried here, in a special chapel, and his tombstone is a true masterpiece of black marble.
St. Anne's Church is a university collegiate church and was originally associated with the Kraków Academy and later the Jagiellonian University. Important services for professors and students were held here. Many academic ceremonies are still held here, including weddings and funerals.

Anny. Niby niepozorny z zewnątrz, trochę schowany w cieniu Collegium Maius i miejskiego zgiełku, ale w środku? Pełny barok w najczystszej postaci, złoto, freski, historia bijąca ze ścian.
Zanim ten kościół przybrał obecny barokowy wygląd, z początku, był tu inny gotycki kościół pochodzący z końca XIV wieku. Postawiono go przy szpitalu św. Anny Samotrzeciej z Maryją i małym Jezusem.
