Around Scotland no.6 - Eilean Donan Castle

A few kilometers before reaching the end of the island called Great Britain and entering via the picturesque Skye Bridge onto the neighboring Isle of Skye, another tourist attraction awaited us. First, for a few kilometers, our road ran parallel to the shore of the very picturesque Loch Duich Bay. The visual effects were intensified by favorable weather conditions. Through the cloudy sky, ideally over the southern part of the bay, the rays of the sun shone radiating out, but this is what happens when the day begins early in the morning, then the weather often pays tribute to early risers.

Na kilka kilometrów przed dotarciem do końca wyspy zwanej Wielka Brytania i wjechania poprzez malowniczy most Skye Bridge na sąsiednia wyspę Skye czekała nas jeszcze jedna atrakcja turystyczna. Najpierw przez kilka kilometrów nasza droga biegła równolegle do brzegu bardzo malowniczej zatoki Loch Duich. Efekty wizualne zostały spotęgowane poprzez sprzyjające warunki pogodowe. Przez zachmurzone niebo, idealnie nad południową częścią zatoki, wpadały promienie słońca promieniście się rozchodząc, ale tak to już bywa gdy zaczyna się dzień wcześnie rano wówczas pogoda często odwdzięcza się rannym ptaszkom.

The tourist attraction is located at the end of Loch Duich Bay, at the point where Loch Alsh Bay begins. By the way, the naming of Scottish landscape elements is very strange. Each lake and bay has the Loch prefix. The fact that the names of all lakes start with the word Loch somehow I remember easily, because the most famous lake in Scotland, Loch Ness, is probably known to everyone, when the word Loch began to appear also in the context of bays, I fell into a certain consternation. The difference between the lake and the bay is quite big, so what's the point? And it is about the old days and derived from the Scottish Gaelic language, in which the word Loch means water space. Apparently the early Scots saw no need to distinguish between these two different geographic formations in their language.
So where Loch Duich ends and Loch Alsh begins, stands one of Scotland's most beautiful and recognizable castles. Built in 1220 on the island, Eilean Donan Castle is a fortress connected to the mainland only by a stone bridge. King Alexander II is responsible for its construction. The history of the castle ended in May 1719, when the ships of the Royal Navy, wanting to drive out the Spaniards stationed there, completely destroyed the building. What we can admire now is only the reconstruction from the beginning of the 20th century.

Ciekawostka turystyczna znajduje się na końcu zatoki Loch Duich w miejscu gdzie zaczyna się zatoka Loch Alsh. Swoją droga bardzo dziwne jest to nazewnictwo Szkockich elementów krajobrazu. Każde jezioro i zatoka mają przedrostek Loch. Jeszcze fakt, że nazwy wszystkich jezior zaczynają się od słowa Loch jakoś łatwo przyszło mi zapamiętać, bo przecież najsłynniejsze jezioro w Szkocji czyli Loch Ness zna chyba każdy, to gdy słowo Loch zaczęło pojawiać się również w kontekście zatok wpadłem w pewną konsternację. Różnica między jeziorem, a zatoką jest dość duża, więc o co chodzi? A chodzi tutaj o dawne czasy i wywodzące się z języka szkockiego gaelickiego, w którym słowo Loch oznacza przestrzeń wodną. Najwyraźniej dawni Szkoci nie widzieli potrzeby rozróżnienia w swoim języku tych dwóch różnych formacji geograficznych.
Tak więc w miejscu gdzie kończy się Loch Duich, a zaczyna Loch Alsh stoi jeden z najpiękniejszych szkockich i najbardziej rozpoznawalnych zamków. Zbudowany w roku 1220 na wyspie zamek Eilean Donan to to twierdza połączona z lądem jedynie poprzez kamienny most. Za jego budowę odpowiedzialny jest król Aleksander II. Historia zamku zakończyła się w maju roku 1719 kiedy to statki Królewskiej Marynarki Wojennej chcąc przepędzić stacjonujących tam Hiszpanów doszczętnie zniszczyli budowlę. To co możemy podziwiać obecnie to tylko pochodząca z początku XX wieku rekonstrukcja.

Like almost everything in Scotland, this Castle also served as the setting for the filming of scenes in the Jams Bond film series. This time it was the 1999 movie "The World Is Not Enough", where Pierce Brosnan played the role of agent 007.

Jak niemal wszystko w Szkocji również i ten Zamek posłużył jako sceneria do nakręcenia scen w serii filmów o Jamsie Bondzie. Tym razem było to film „Świat to za mało” z roku 1999 gdzie w rolę agenta 007 wcielił się Pierce Brosnan.
