Around Scotland no.5 - Glenfinnan Viaduct

While looking for tourist attractions, before going to Scotland, we came across three interesting places related to two famous British film series. The series of films about Agent 007 James Bond, namely the Skyfall film and the road appearing in this film, already had their description in one of the previous entries. The second book and film series that is the fruit of British culture, the background of which is set in Scotland, is Harry Potter. Probably everyone, even people who have not watched Harry Potter movies, should associate a certain railway viaduct made of dark stone. He appears twice in the film series. For the first time in the movie Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, when Harry and Ron are flying in a blue car to Hogwarts and just in the vicinity of this railway viaduct they almost do not collide with an oncoming steam engine. The second moment is the film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, where the train going to Hogwarts during a storm stops on this viaduct and is attacked by dementors.

Szukając atrakcji turystycznych przed wyjazdem do Szkocji natrafiliśmy na trzy ciekawe miejsca związane z dwiema słynnymi brytyjskimi seriami filmowymi. Seria filmów o Agencie 007 James Bond a dokładnie film Skyfall i pojawiająca się w tym filmie droga już miała swój opis w jednym z poprzednich wpisów. Druga seria książkowo-filmowa będąca owocem kultury brytyjskiej, której tło zostało osadzone w Szkocji to Harry Potter. Chyba każdy, nawet osoby które nie oglądały filmów o Harrym Potterze powinny kojarzyć pewien wymurowany z ciemnego kamienia wiadukt kolejowy. W filmowej serii pojawia się on dwa razy. Pierwszy raz w filmie Harry Potter i Komnata Tajemnic gdy Harry i Ron lecą niebieskim autkiem do Hogwartu i właśnie w okolicy owego wiaduktu kolejowego niemal nie zderzają się z nadjeżdżającym parowozem. Drugi moment to film Harry Potter i Więzień Azkabanu gdzie pociąg jadący do Hogwartu w trakcie sztormu zatrzymuje się na właśnie tym wiadukcie i jest atakowany przez dementory.

Who are we talking about? About the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which is on the West Highland Line and crosses the Finnan Valley. A railroad connects the port of Mallaig in the far north of Scotland with one of Scotland's largest cities, Glasgow. The viaduct built in 1897/1901 with a total length of 380 meters consists of 21 arched spans with a span of 15 meters each, and at its peak the level of the viaduct rises 30 meters above the valley. In the past, mainly freight trains ran along the viaduct, carrying mainly fish from the coast into the country. Passenger trains still move on the viaduct and a real gradka for every tourist is to aim at this viaduct just at the moment when a steam locomotive passes over it. Unfortunately, we did not succeed. Because the last train of the day passed about an hour before our arrival.

It so happened that we had the opportunity to see the viaduct from a very close distance, because while exploring the area and walking from one viewpoint to another viewpoint, it started to rain quite seriously. The decision was quick and the only right one: let's run under the viaduct and try to hide under it from the rain. The viaduct would protect against rain quite well, but unfortunately the rainfall was also accompanied by strong wind, which meant that the direction from which it rained was constantly changing. In order to somehow remedy this, we had to constantly wander under the viaduct and hide sometimes on the eastern side, and sometimes on the western side of the pillars.

Near the viaduct, closer to the Loch Shiel lake, there is a monumental monument commemorating the soldiers killed in the Jakobicki Uprising in 1745. The monument, built in 1814, has the form of an 18-meter tower, and from 1835 there is a statue of an unknown highlander on its top.

A o kim mowa? O Wiadukcie Glenfinnan, który znajduje się w ciągu linii kolejowej West Highland Line i przekracza doline rzeki Finnan. Linia kolejowa łączy port w Mallaig położony na dalekiej północy Szkocji z jednym z największych Szkockich miast Glasgow. Wiadukt zbudowany w latach 1897/1901 o łącznej długości 380 metrów składa się z 21 łukowych przęseł o 15 metrach rozpiętości każdy, a w szczytowym miejscu poziom wiaduktu wznosi się 30 metrów nad doliną. W przeszłości po wiadukcie kursowały głównie pociągi towarowe wożące głownie ryby z wybrzeża w głąb kraju. Po wiadukcie w dalszym ciągu poruszają się pociągi pasażerskie i prawdziwą gradka dla każdego turysty jest wcelowanie się ze swoją wizyta na tym wiadukcie właśnie w momencie, gdy przejeżdża po nim parowóz. Nam niestety się to nie udało. Gdyż ostatni pociąg tego dnia przejechał jakąś godzinę przed naszym przyjazdem.

Tak się złożyło, że mieliśmy okazję zapoznać się z wiaduktem z bardzo bliskiej odległości, ponieważ w trakcie zwiedzania okolicy i idąc z jednego punktu widokowego na drugi punkt widokowy zaczęło dość poważnie padać. Decyzja była szybka i jedyna słuszna: biegnijmy pod wiadukt i spróbujmy się pod nim schować przed deszczem. Wiadukt chroniłby dość dobrze przed deszczem, ale niestety opadowi deszczu towarzyszył również silny wiatr, co sprawiało że kierunek z którego pada deszcz nieustannie się zmieniał. Aby jakoś temu zaradzić musieliśmy nieustannie wędrować pod wiaduktem i chować się raz po wschodniej, raz po zachodniej stronie filarów.

W pobliżu wiaduktu bliżej jeziora Loch Shiel znajduje się monumentalny pomnik upamiętniający żołnierzy poległych w Powstaniu Jakobickim z roku 1745. Pomnik zbudowany w 1814 roku ma formę wieży o wysokości 18 metrów, a od 1835 roku na jej szczycie stoi posąg nieznanego górala.
