Around Georgia no.11 – Chiatura

The history of the world is very turbulent and unpredictable, which is very well confirmed by the example of the history of Georgia. Although Georgia is a much older country with a much older culture than Russia, at the beginning of the 20th century poor Georgia had to give up, recognize the superiority of Russia and become one of the union states of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. From that day on, the landscape of Georgian cities began to transform towards the well-known landscape of demoluds built in the style of socialist realism. It probably never worked out for anyone, but in a small Georgian town of Chiatura, with only 12,000 inhabitants, the combination of socialist realism and industrial architecture gave a very interesting effect. Huge deposits of manganese were discovered in Chiatura, but due to the steep mountain slopes that are located in the city, mining, as well as the transport of workers to the mines, was very burdensome. As a solution, building a network of above-ground cable cars in the city was proposed. The network was built in 1954 and since then it has been continuously used by residents to move around the city. Also, since 1954, this cable car system has not been modernized or renovated in any way, and with each passing year their technical condition became more and more questionable. It got to the point that in the last decade, with the influx of tourists to Georgia, Chiatura became a permanent point of excursions, and a ride on the local cable cars was something like extreme entertainment. We also decided to take advantage of this "attraction" and I must admit that the moment when the cable car rises above the ground and you can watch the town moving away from you through the holes in the floor of the cable car is an extreme experience.

Historia świata jest bardzo burzliwa i nieprzewidywalna, co bardzo dobrze potwierdza przykład historii Gruzji. Mimo, że Gruzja jest dużo starszym państwem z dużo starszą kulturą niż Rosja, to na początku XX wieku nieszczęsna Gruzja musiała poddać się, uznać wyższość Rosji i stać się jednym z państw związkowych Związku Socjalistycznych Republik Radzieckich. Od tego dnia krajobraz miast Gruzji zaczął przeistaczać się w kierunku tak dobrze znanego nam krajobrazu demoludów budowanych w stylu socrealizmu. Chyba nigdy nikomu to na dobre nie wyszło, ale w małej, liczącej zaledwie 12 tysięcy mieszkańców gruzińskiej mieścinie o nazwie Cziatura Połączenie socrealizmu oraz architektury przemysłowej dało bardzo ciekawy efekt. W Cziaturze odkryto ogromne złoża manganu, ale ze względu na strome zbocza górskie które znajduja się w mieście wydobycie, a także transport pracowników do kopalń był bardzo uciążliwy. Jako rozwiązanie zaproponowano zbudowanie w mieście sieci naziemnych kolejek linowych. Sieć zbudowano w oku 1954 i od tego czasu nieprzerwanie służyło mieszkańcom do poruszania się po mieście. Również od 1954 roku ten system kolejki nie był w żaden sposób modernizowany ani remontowany, a z każdym rokiem ich stan techniczny stawał się coraz bardziej wątpliwy. Doszło to tego, że w ostatniej dekadzie wraz z napływem turystów do Gruzji Cziatura stała się stałym punktem wycieczek, a przejażdżka lokalnymi kolejkami linowymi była czymś na kształt rozrywki ekstremalnej. My również postanowiliśmy skorzystać z tej „atrakcji” i muszę przyznać, że moment w którym wagonik kolejki wznosi się nad ziemię, a poprzez dziury w podłodze wagonika możesz obserwować oddalające się od ciebie miasteczko, jest doznaniem ekstremalnym.
