Come With Me to See the Angel Oak Tree!
Happy Tree Tuesday, y'all!
Recently we got back home from a nice vacation in the lowlands of South Carolina. While we were in Charleston, one of the many attractions we set out to see was located on Johns Island. More specifically it was located on Angel Oak Drive, in what is called Angel Oak Park and unsurprisingly is called the Angel Oak! After all what else could it be called lol. 🤣 You just might be able to tell that the Angel Oak is kind of a big deal right around there LOL.
In fact it is such a big deal that the Angel Oak Park receives 400,000 folks visiting the mighty Angel Oak every year!
According to https://www.charleston-sc.gov/153/Angel-Oak
the Angle Oak is
65 feet high with a circumference of 25.5 feet, shading an area of 17,000 square feet.
The Angel Oak Tree is what is called a Southern Live Oak tree. Here it is next to a seven year old baby Live Oak
Now I must admit not being one that puts a lot of meaning to woo woo ghost stories and such. In fact I have always come down on the side of old Huck Finn when he told the Widow Douglas as she was explaining the bib;ical story of Moses that he “don't put no stock in dead people.” That being said I thought I would include this interesting fact from Wikipedia just so you will know I'm not making this up LOL:
The oak derives its name from the estate of Justus Angel and his wife, Martha Waight Tucker Angel. Local folklore tells stories of ghosts of formerly enslaved people appearing as angels around the tree.
Interestingly some of the massive limbs are actually on the ground but are totally alive and doing well.
One thing for certain in South Carolina, the Southern Live Oak tree is ubiquitous and generally draped in omnipresent Spanish moss!
The fact that I did not see any Spanish moss on the Angel Oak was mighty peculiar and leads me to believe that they actively remove it though I never asked about it.
The thing that struck me about the Live Oak, outside of its sheer size, was how glossy and shiny the leaves were.
I hope your hump day tomorrow is a good one!
