FungiFriday - Gremlin shrooms

Gremlin shrooms

There is an acacia stump nearby my house where different kinds of mushrooms have been growing for a number of years. Mushrooms are growing from a gray-brown mass that covers the stump's upper surface. Turkey tail mushrooms are the most prevalent ones on this stump. They can be seen on and near the stump.

Nearly every day, I pass this stump and frequently check to see whether anything has changed. I first saw the mushrooms' colors shifting a few weeks ago. Several mushrooms are beginning to develop green spots. They appear to be moss from a distance, but up close, the surface appears to be covered in green slimes.

I'm unsure if this is a result of the wet and generally warm winter. The only thing I'm sure about is that I have never witnessed a similar phenomena before, which looks pretty intriguing. I'm also not really clear if the organic material covering these mushrooms' surface is moss or if it is something else.

If any of you have ever noticed a comparable phenomenon develop on mushrooms, please let me know. I'll keep an eye on the situation. Perhaps some gremlins really do emerge after all.
