[ENG/ESP] Visiting the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, Spain ⛪

01 portada.jpeg

My first time in Santiago de Compostela was almost a must-do adventure. I didn't feel like going anywhere, but Mom had been planning the trip for weeks so we could get out of the house for Easter. And I'm so glad I went; I finally got around to it at the last minute, and it was worth it. Even though it was a very rainy and gray day 🌧️

In this post, I'll give you a brief summary of what it was like traveling to Santiago by train from Vigo (both cities in Galicia, Spain) to see the Cathedral. It was our first train trip in Spain, and the experience was quite pleasant. We liked the facilities. We bought our round-trip tickets the night before, and the cost per person was almost €12, which seemed reasonable. The trip takes almost an hour 🚅

To enter the cathedral, you have to wait in line, even if it's raining. I think it's normal at this time of year for many Catholic believers to want to see or visit the cathedral on Holy Thursday. The tourist entrance that was open when I visited was opposite the entrance in Plaza del Obradoiro (the entrance in the cover photo of this post).

For thousands of pilgrims who walk the various routes of the Camino de Santiago, reaching the Cathedral and embracing the image of the Apostle is the culmination of a spiritual and physical journey... And the tour of the cathedral, at least the part accessible to tourists that I was able to take, takes less than an hour. There is low lighting and extensive works of art to appreciate. The presence of gold is particularly striking in this cathedral. Although its origin is Romanesque (begun in the 11th century), the cathedral has incorporated elements of different styles over the centuries, such as Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. This blend of styles, visible in its facades, chapels, and dome, gives it great architectural richness.

In the crypt beneath the main altar lies the tomb of the Apostle Saint James the Greater, one of Jesus' twelve disciples. This is the main reason for the pilgrimage and the spiritual heart of the cathedral. I'll share a little more about this point in future posts, although photography is not allowed at that part of the route ❌

Among the many elements to admire in the cathedral, what I liked most was the ceiling decoration. I'm personally inclined to be minimalist, so I found it more visually pleasing to admire the ceiling painting, something a little more "simple" to the eye, unlike the figures and sculptures made of gold, paint, wood, etc.

Abrazos.
