Market Friday | Student's Shopping.

Greetings Everyone

Much appreciation to @dswigle for organizing #marketfriday, where we get to share our market experiences and the goods we purchased. Inflation has become the order of the day; we suffer the hike in the price of goods and services, and no one is talking about it.

As if that was not enough, we now suffer from fuel scarcity, and this one is not funny at all. The transportation fare to the market was increased; we used to pay 200 naira ($0.48) to and fro, but due to fuel scarcity, we are now charged 800 naira ($1.80). You can see for yourself. The market I visited is called the "Ndi-Oru" market; it's a local market close to my school.

I went there to get food items as I was running short on food items. I had a lot to buy with just a little money, so I had to improvise. I went with a list to avoid going to buy what I shouldn't and running short on the money I had. The things I needed include:

  • Pepper
  • Onion
  • Okra
  • Rice
  • Hot leaf
  • Palm and groundnut oil
  • Spices
  • Detergent and soap.

With my list, I headed for the market, and just at the entrance of the market, I met a woman selling pepper, okra, and hot leaf. I purchased okra #300, pepper #200 and hot leaf #100. Due to the hike in the price of everything, the amount of hot leaf and okra sold at this price was very small, but we had no choice but to just purchase, go home, and manage.

I proceeded further and found an onion seller; the woman really knows how to treat customers. She was cracking jokes while she sold onions for me. I purchased onions worth #1000 from her. Afterwards, I proceeded to the woman I normally purchase rice from; a custard of rice is now sold for #4700. In the life of a student, rice is very important, so I bought one custard.

Lucky enough, I found someone selling spices alongside detergent and soap, and I called on him. I bought soap and detergent worth #1500. I buy in large quantities, so I don't get to buy again for a while. I proceeded to the woman that sells oil, buying a bottle of groundnut oil at #1500 and a bottle of palm oil at #900.

I proceeded to get spices, which was the last thing on my list, and I decided to get some dried fish as well. We cannot keep eating carbohydrates all day. I spent a total of #10,200 ($22.5) at the market today.

Thanks for reading.
