Peer Tube and Fediverse are the backbone for hundreds of Video networks taking on YouTube.

What is the Fediverse?

The Fediverse (Federation + Universe) is a network of independent, interconnected social media platforms that can communicate with each other using open standards like ActivityPub, similar to how different email providers (Gmail, Outlook) can exchange messages.

It's a decentralized ecosystem of servers (instances) where users on one platform (like Mastodon) can follow and interact with users on another (like Pixelfed or PeerTube) without needing separate accounts, offering an alternative to centralized giants by promoting user control, data sovereignty, and diverse moderation rules.

Key Concepts:

Decentralized: No single company owns or controls the entire network.

Federated: Servers (instances) operate independently but can talk to each other.

ActivityPub: The common language (protocol) that enables communication between different apps.

Instances: Small communities or servers, each with its own admins and moderation.

How it Works (Analogy):

Email: You have a Gmail account, but you can email a friend on Outlook or Yahoo Mail; they are different services but use the same rules.

Fediverse: You join a Mastodon server, but you can follow and interact with someone on a video-sharing platform like PeerTube or an image-sharing one like Pixelfed, as long as they use ActivityPub.

Popular Fediverse Platforms:

Mastodon: A popular microblogging platform (like Twitter/X).

Pixelfed: For photo sharing (like Instagram).

PeerTube: For video sharing (like YouTube).

Lemmy / Kbin: For link aggregation/discussion (like Reddit).
