Azores: Rocky Coast, Ocean and a Hot Spring Pool

Friday, day #6 and our last full day on the Azores was here. We had decided the previous night to keep it relaxed and try for some other hot springs. Hence, after breakfast we drove west towards

Ponta da Ferraria

With the intent to see some rugged coast line and to jump into a coastal hot spring.

Unfortunately, this was the morning when in the parking lot I banged my toe so hard or unlucky that if not broke I sprained it. So, a lot of walking or swimming for that matter was not on the menu for me that day.

We did walk around a little and marveled at the beautiful, rocky coast and blue ocean and took a gazillion photos. Look at those spikey, black rocks - you really do not want to slip and fall on those. It wouldn't take much to make you bleed. Or worse, fall into the churning ocean - no bueno either way.

Soon enough we were walking into the direction of the hot spring. It wasn't too bad of a walk but I definitely wasn't going to go for a swim, unlike hubby. He enjoyed it a lot and reported back to me how warm it was, hot in spots, and you had the natural ocean swell in it. Really nice.

I bet this must we awesome during winter or some cooler or rainy weather. Interestingly, they did have a couple of lifeguards on duty, I guess people do swim out into the ocean and by the looks of things there are a lot of sharp rocks which can make it dangerous with the ebb and flow of the current.

While hubby was enjoying the crystal clear water I sat by the rock pools on the rocks and watched the wildlife in form of crabs (and people) in the water and tiny lizards zipping by me.

From here we took a bit of drive north along the coast turning east eventually. Basically, we took the long way back to Ponta Delgada and had a couple more stops overlooking the ocean to snap a few more photos and just enjoy the scenery and fresh ocean air.

We had a brief lunch right at the coast and took a few more pics - of course. Rocky coast lines are simply fascinating. All the formations that were carved over time and rock pools, waves - so awesome.

We took one more break and stopped at

Poços das Calhetas - Calhau da Furna

One of the black beaches on the island. Did I mention that there are these 'ocean swimming pools' all over the Azores. Basically, beaches with 'pools' sheltered by the rocks from the ocean's current. Very neat. If it weren't for the threat of 'Portuguese Man o'Wars - brrrh, scary.

We got back to our hotel fairly early so we had time to pack up all our stuff before heading to one last dinner at our favorite little hotel restaurant complete with some white Azorean wine from Pico island.

And this concludes our 2024 one week trip to the Azores. We had a great time and are sure planning to return. And when we do we will be exploring other Azores islands beyond Sao Miguel.
