Farewell to Goddess Nanda–Sunanda — A Soul-Touching Experience from Almora

Hello friends!😊
Today I witnessed an extraordinary and emotional moment in the cultural city of Almora. As in every year, the grand farewell procession and immersion of Goddess Nanda–Sunanda took place. Despite heavy rain, a sea of devotees gathered from far and wide to catch a glimpse of the divine palanquin. When the idols of the goddesses were bid farewell, tears welled up in countless eyes—it was truly a sight to behold.

The Nanda Devi Fair of Almora is not just a religious event; it is a priceless cultural and historical heritage. This tradition dates back to the rule of the Chand dynasty. Even today, the descendants of the Chand rulers play a key role in the rituals and serve as the chief priests of the festival. The idols of Goddess Nanda and Sunanda are crafted in a very special way—they are made from the trunk of the banana tree, known locally as the Katli tree.

Although Goddess Nanda Devi is worshipped across Uttarakhand with deep devotion, the Almora celebrations are truly unique. Pilgrims and visitors arrive not only from neighboring villages and towns, but also from distant regions to participate. Along with its profound religious significance, the fair is also a vibrant expression of the region’s social and cultural spirit.

I too went to the fair today to have darshan of Goddess Nanda Devi. The crowd was enormous—it felt as if devotion itself had taken over the entire town. Moving forward step by step was a challenge, and I couldn’t stay there for long, but even that brief glimpse of the goddess filled my heart with immense joy.

The fairground was lively and colorful, with stalls set up in every direction. There were toys for children, household essentials, traditional crafts, and delicious food—each shop adding to the charm of the occasion. This reminded me once again that our traditions are not just about prayer and rituals—they bring together faith, celebration, and human connection.

The farewell of Goddess Nanda–Sunanda, followed by the immersion ceremony in the Doba Nola river, was a deeply moving experience. Despite the downpour, thousands gathered to watch the divine procession, proving once again how faith can rise above every barrier.
For me, this event was more than just a festival—it was a reminder of how devotion, heritage, and community spirit can unite people in such a powerful way. The Nanda Devi Fair of Almora continues to stand as a living example of Uttarakhand’s timeless traditions and the unbroken bond between faith and culture.
