The fascinating cemetery of Pistoia/ El fascinante cementerio de Pistoia. 🪦🪦

Good evening blog friends today I had a very busy day so I was a bit absent from the blog and also an unlucky day in some ways because my mother-in-law had health problems. Today we had already left with a not very cheerful trip to the cemetery to visit a deceased relative and bring a flower, as we sometimes do by tradition. The cemetery is notoriously a sad place but it is also an extremely fascinating place, at least I have always been fascinated by cemeteries especially the ancient ones. The cemetery of Pistoia is very large and has a part with the oldest but not very ancient tombs and chapels (like from the early 1900s and rare tombs from the end of the 19th century) and a new and more modern part. To enter the cemetery you pass through a long tree-lined avenue obviously with cypresses, trees typical of cemeteries here in Italy and also typical of my region Tuscany. We immediately encountered some of the private chapels of the more wealthy families of the area, simple chapels with a classical air without having a gloomy appearance like other chapels. But every now and then we also saw some statues of angels with a darker and almost gothic appearance, my favorite style for tombs.

We also met some old tombs obviously accompanied by fascinating but disturbing photos of the time, some tombs were well kept others not so much, it was also interesting obviously to read the writings on the tombs with old names, stories, people it is impressive to think that all those names, those stories and those people were alive like us. Some tombs were more elaborate in rich marbles and decorated others were simple in wood with a cross or stone. We then approached the new part of the cemetery surmounted by a large white monument dedicated to the fallen of the wars and by a sculpture of a very particular cross made by the famous Pistoia sculptor Marino Marini. In the cemetery we also saw two monumental buildings one dedicated to the memory where the registers are kept and another where the niches are enclosed which are really many also with more or less simple slabs with commemorative writings some really touching. In general it is a beautiful cemetery, very well kept and large and with tombs and niches even ancient very interesting, I think it is a cemetery that is worth visiting if you too are fascinated by cemeteries. We were very impressed by both the size and the various areas of this cemetery.

Algunas tumbas estaban bien conservadas, otras no tanto.

I still have a picture somewhere that your mom sent me of the ironwork above one of the gates. Beautiful!

Very contrary to what is thought of a cemetery, although it will always be a nostalgic place. The truth is that this cemetery is very nice, it has a very particular architectural design. I had never seen one like it, it was worth a review. Greetings.

I’m sorry to hear about your mother-in-law’s health issues, and I hope she gets better soon.🙏
Visiting a cemetery can be a bittersweet experience. I find cemeteries fascinating too, especially the old ones. There’s something about the mix of history, art, and stories that makes them more than just a place of mourning. The contrast between simple and elaborate tombs is so interesting, and I get why you’re drawn to the darker, gothic angels. The monument to the fallen and the Marino Marini sculpture add a modern touch to an otherwise historic place. It sounds like a peaceful and fascinating spot for reflection. Thanks for sharing @noemilunastorta ..
