Visitando un lugar de gran historia de la ciudad de Maracaibo, esta vez estuve recorriendo el cementerio "El Cuadrado" qué posee grandes elementos arquitectónicos e impresionantes que le compartí en una publicación pasada, pero esta vez específicamente les hablaré únicamente de los personajes insignes de gran historia que se encuentran sepultados en el mismo, algunos han sido trasladados al panteón regional y también al panteón nacional, este espacio o recinto sagrado ha sido bastante valorado históricamente por los personajes que se encuentran aquí entre ellos destacan varios como los Lossadas.

Whilst visiting a place steeped in history in the city of Maracaibo, this time I was exploring the ‘El Cuadrado’ cemetery, which boasts magnificent and impressive architectural features that I shared with you in a previous post, but this time I’ll be focusing specifically on the distinguished historical figures buried there. Some have been moved to the regional mausoleum and also to the national mausoleum. This sacred site has been highly valued throughout history for the figures interred here, amongst whom several stand out, such as the Lossadas family.

Inicialmente al llegar al panteón puedes encontrar las tumbas de Hunaldo así como también de la familia Jugo quien fue una familia bastante importante e influyente de la ciudad de Maracaibo en lo que se puede apreciar su gran obelisco alto una tumba bastante imponente, entre otras familias importantes también como lo son los machados quien son uno de los dueños de los equipos de las Águilas del Zulia a su vez familias también de béisboleros famosos entre otros más.

°>On arriving at the cemetery, you will first come across the graves of Hunaldo and the Jugo family, who were a very important and influential family in the city of Maracaibo, as can be seen from their large, tall obelisk and rather imposing tomb, alongside those of other prominent families, such as the Machados one of the owners of the Águilas del Zulia baseball team as well as families of famous baseball players, amongst others.

Uno de los personajes que suelen ser los más antiguos e históricos enterrados, aquí de las primeras personas sepultadas podemos encontrar al doctor Uroquinaona quién fue un personaje bastante recordado de la medicina zuliana, puesto que realizó grandes aportes y el hospital central de Maracaibo, lleva su nombre en este espacio podemos ver qué se encuentra su tumba así como también de otros familiares más, a pesar de que este falleció en otro lugar su cuerpo fue repatriado para Venezuela y enterrado aquí.

One of the figures who are usually among the oldest and most historic to be buried among the earliest people buried here is Dr Uroquinaona, who was a well-remembered figure in Zulia’s medical community, having made significant contributions; indeed, Maracaibo’s central hospital is named after him. Here we can see his grave, as well as those of other relatives. Although he died elsewhere, his body was repatriated to Venezuela and buried here.

Bien, también tuve el gusto de visitar la tumba del doctor Humberto Fernández Morán y su padre, a pesar de que sus restos mortales ya no reposan, en su tumba, esta fue su tumba durante muchos años justamente el año pasado, sus restos fueron trasladados al panteón nacional en Caracas, en donde se encuentran actualmente reposando, podemos ver qué está su tumba con su imagen y su lápid, qué hace referencia a este valioso gran hombre que realizó grandes aportes a la medicina pues fue el creador del bisturí de diamante y por eso es que he reconocido por esta gran hazaña sin duda alguna un doctor de gran orgullo para nuestra ciudad y país.

Well, I also had the pleasure of visiting the grave of Dr Humberto Fernández Morán and his father, even though their remains no longer rest there. This was their resting place for many years; just last year, their remains were transferred to the National Pantheon in Caracas, where they are currently laid to rest, We can see that his grave still bears his portrait and his headstone, which pay tribute to this remarkable man who made significant contributions to medicine; he was, after all, the inventor of the diamond scalpel, and it is for this great achievement that he is recognised without a doubt, a doctor of whom our city and country are immensely proud.

Ahora bien también se encuentra la tumba de los Lossada en donde reposan los restos mortales de Jesús Enrique Lossada, quien fue rector de la ilustre Universidad del Zulia, formando gran parte de la historia, ya que este justamente fue el rector que conllevó a la reapertura de la universidad del Zulia, ya que estuvo varios años cerradas, justamente en su reapertura el era el rector a su vez también se encuentran enterrados aquí los restos mortales de Eduardo Matías Lossada quién era su primo que también es reconocido por ser un gran educador narrador poeta y traductor de la ciudad, aquí también se encuentra sepultada su madre.

There is also the Lossada family tomb, where the remains of Jesús Enrique Lossada rest. He served as rector of the illustrious University of Zulia and played a major role in its history, as he was the very rector who oversaw the reopening of the University of Zulia after it had been closed for several years, and he was indeed the rector at the time of its reopening. Also buried here are the remains of Eduardo Matías Lossada, his cousin, who is also recognised as a great educator, storyteller, poet and translator in the city; his mother is also buried here.

También visité la tumba del primer rector de la universidad del Zulia, como lo fue Francisco Ochoa que en este lugar, también se encuentran enterrados varios de sus familiares, muchas personas tienden a confundirse con Francisco Ochoa y Jesús Enrique Lossada, resulta ser que Francisco Ochoa, no fue más que el primer rector de la Universidad de Zulia, ambos son personajes históricos pero tuvieron papeles protagónicos diferentes.

I also visited the grave of the first vicechancellor of the University of Zulia, Francisco Ochoa; several of his relatives are also buried here. Many people tend to confuse Francisco Ochoa with Jesús Enrique Lossada, but it turns out that Francisco Ochoa was simply the first vice-chancellor of the University of Zulia; both are historical figures but played different leading roles.

Por último, también una de las tomas más importantes, pero esta es una tumba bastante sencilla que pasa desapercibida, y tampoco no tiene alguna lápida de identificación solo una pequeña cruz y podemos encontrarla fácilmente en el primer pasillo del cementerio justamente a su izquierda después de la tumba de los familiares de Rafael Urdaneta, cmo los fue el uno de los fundadores de Maracaibo el alemán Ambrosio Alfinger en su primera fundación, siendo también el primer gobernante de la Provincia de Venezuela, el era un conquistador y explorador.

Finally, this is also one of the most important sites, but it is a rather simple grave that goes unnoticed, and it doesn’t have a headstone either just a small cross. It can be easily found in the first aisle of the cemetery, just to the left after the grave of Rafael Urdaneta’s relatives. Rafael Urdaneta was one of the founders of Maracaibo, alongside the German Ambrosio Alfinger, who was involved in its initial settlement and was also the first governor of the Province of Venezuela; he was a conquistador and explorer.
