A visit to the oldest cemetery in Maracaibo. | Una visita al cementerio más antiguo de Maracaibo.

En mis pasos por los sitios antiguos de Maracaibo, tuve la oportunidad de visitar el primer cementerio más antiguo de la ciudad en conjunto con mi hermano Alcides, recientemente este cementerio ha sido totalmente recuperado y remodelado, puesto que se encontraba en pésimo mantenimiento, pero el sol de hoy se ve que está siendo mejpor cuidado yes que en su interior reposa, grandes personajes ilustres e históricos de la ciudad es considerado un museo a cielo abierto, pues es una ventana de postal llena de arte, que te encuentras cuando vas subiendo el elevado de la avenida, "Las Delicias", aparte tiene se tiende hacer un lugar reconocido por los diferentes estilos arquitectónicos que se pueden encontrar.

Whilst exploring the historic sites of Maracaibo, I had the opportunity to visit the city’s oldest cemetery together with my brother Alcides. This cemetery has recently been completely restored and refurbished, as it had previously been in a state of disrepair, but today it is clearly being better looked after, and indeed, as it is the final resting place of the city’s great illustrious and historical figures, it is considered an open-air museum, as it offers a picture-postcard view brimming with art, which you come across as you walk up the flyover on ‘Las Delicias’ Avenue. Furthermore, it is becoming a well-known spot for the various architectural styles that can be found there.

Particularmente a pesar de que es un lugar que tiende a emana cierta vibra pesada, ya que descansan allí los restos mortales de muchas personas tiende a reunir muchas de las cualidades artísticas e impresionantes, ya que podemos encontrar diferentes estilos de diseños arquitectónicos, las estatuas que se encuentran en el interior fueron traídas, mayormente de materiales europeos, en su gran mayoría fabricadas de mármol de la más alta calidad, podemos encontrar que la mayoría de las tumbas de personas ilustres e importantes de la ciudad tienen un gran monumento que expresa y reúne muchas características artísticas de distintos estilos, en el que más predomina el estilo neoclásico pero se encuentran presentes un alrededor de más de diez estilos.

In particular, although it is a place that tends to exude a somewhat sombre atmosphere, given that the mortal remains of many people rest there, it also possesses many artistic and impressive qualities, as we can find different styles of architectural design; the statues found inside were brought in, mostly from Europe, the vast majority of them crafted from the highest quality marble, We can see that most of the tombs of the city’s illustrious and important figures feature a grand monument that embodies and brings together many artistic characteristics from different styles, with the Neoclassical style predominating, though more than ten other styles are also represented.

De los estilos que suelen estar presentes es el estilo gótico, podemos verlo mucho también, así como su entrada la cerca de este lugar es considerado como un patrimonio histórico y de gran relevancia, puesto que en el están enterrados muchos personajes importantes entre ellos Jesús Enrique Lossada, Eduardo Mathías Lossada así como también el primer rector de la Universidad del Zulia como lo es Francisco Ochoa entre otros más, una de las sepultureros que allí trabaja me pudo orientar un recorrido guiado y me llevó hacia las tumbas importantes de las personajes históricos pero a mí lo que más me llamó la atención era la forma del arte que expresaban cada uno de las estatuas.

One of the architectural styles commonly found here is the Gothic style, which is very prominent; indeed, the entrance and the surrounding area are considered a historic site of great significance, as many important figures are buried here, including Jesús Enrique Lossada, Eduardo Mathías Lossada and Francisco Ochoa, the first rector of the University of Zulia, amongst others. One of the gravediggers working there gave me a guided tour and took me to the important graves of these historical figures, but what caught my attention most was the artistic expression evident in each of the statues.

En otros países países como México y Argentina, se hace turismo oscuro o mejor conocido como turismo funerario, en el cual vas a visitar los cementerios más emblemáticos, con más historias esté fácilmente, podría ser uno de ellos, ya que tiene altamente bastante potencial debido a toda la esencia mística que emana, pero esto es solamente para las personas que sepan apreciar valorar lo histórico, la historias y el arte en su máximo esplendor, un lugar que ya tiene más de 200 años, refleja en gran parte la historia.

In other countries, such as Mexico and Argentina, there is a form of tourism known as ‘dark tourism’ or, more commonly, ‘funeral tourism’, in which you visit the most iconic cemeteries, rich in history. This place could easily be one of them, as it has considerable potential due to the mystical atmosphere it exudes, but this is only for people who know how to appreciate and value history, stories and art in all their splendour; a place that is over 200 years old and largely reflects that history.

Fue un buen recorrido, sin duda alguna para finalizar un placer compartir con ustedes este lugar y conocer más de la historia del lugar, cabe resaltar que este lugar se llama conocido como el antiguo Cementerio "El Cuadrado", es el primer cementerio más antiguo de la ciudad, en la actualidad solamente pueden enterrar allí a las personas que tengan su bóveda no existe venta alguna.

It was a lovely tour, without a doubt, and it has been a pleasure to share this place with you and learn more about its history. It is worth noting that this place is known as the old ‘El Cuadrado’ Cemetery; it is the city’s oldest cemetery. At present, only people who have their own burial vault may be buried there; no plots are available for sale.
