A warm hello to all my dear travelling friends from all over the world; it’s a pleasure to greet you this Friday and continue showing you the hidden corners of my city.

Caminando por los tesoros del casco central de la ciudad de Maracaibo, que es parte histórica, muy comercial, quise recorrer lugares que no había podido visitar uno de ellos, es el sector santa Rosalía, el cual se localiza justamente detrás de gran bazar este sector tiene historia, puesto que hace muchos años atrás apareció de manera inesperada, un pingüino en esta ciudad hecho bastante insólito, debido a las fuertes temperaturas que posee ahora bien, este lugar tiende a esconder bastantes casas de la época colonial, así como también tiene el circuito radiofónico de fe alegría con bastantes años de servicio y una linda capillita que rinda tributo a la virgen de la Asunción.

As I wandered through the treasures of Maracaibo’s city centre a historic and bustling commercial district I wanted to explore places I hadn’t yet had the chance to visit. One of these is the Santa Rosalía neighbourhood, situated just behind the Gran Bazar. This area has a rich history, as many years ago a penguin unexpectedly turned up in the city a rather unusual occurrence given the high temperatures here. this area tends to harbour quite a few houses from the colonial era, as well as the Fe Alegría radio station, which has been in service for many years, and a pretty little chapel that pays tribute to the Virgin of the Assumption.

Justamente al iniciar este recorrido, me tope con el gran edificio del circuito radiofónico de fe y alegría, esto es una institución educativa, pero en este lugar presta solamente la radio, esta escuela de fe alegría en nuestro país Venezuela presentan gran historia, puesto que son una de las principales áreas educativas que brinda atención, educación católica a los niños más pobres y vulnerables durante muchos años de mi infancia pertenecí a la escuela de fe y alegría, ver este edificio que tiene bastantes años funcionando aproximadamente más de 50 años.

Right at the start of this tour, I came across the imposing building housing the ‘Fe y Alegría’ radio network; which is an educational institution, but here it operates solely as a radio station. The ‘Fe y Alegría’ schools in our country, Venezuela, have a rich history, as they are one of the main educational providers offering Catholic education to the poorest and most vulnerable children. For many years during my childhood, I attended a ‘Fe y Alegría’ school, and seeing this building, which has been in operation for over 50 years, is quite something.

A su vez, podemos ver las casas coloniales antiguas que eran totalmente fabricadas con ladrillos de ventanas estrechas alargadas, altas sobresalientes y de madera pertenecientes únicamente a la época de hace 150 y 200 años atrás, en nuestra ciudad muchas de ellas se encuentran deteriorada como la que podemos evidenciar, ya que no hay mayor sentido de pertenencia al patrimonio histórico zuliano, al ser casas muy antiguas normalmente sus dueños las dejan abandonadas porque requieren mantenimiento al ser casas de la época con techos tan altos y estrechos tienen a ser bastante dificultoso, costosos poder tratarlas.

At the same time, we can see the old colonial houses, which were built entirely of brick, with narrow, elongated windows, high, projecting eaves and wooden features, dating back 150 to 200 years; In our city, many of them are in a state of disrepair, as we can see here, because there is little sense of ownership of Zulia’s historical heritage. As these are very old houses, their owners usually leave them abandoned because they require maintenance; given that they are period houses with such high, narrow ceilings, it tends to be quite difficult and costly to maintain them.

Ciertamente en santa Rosalía no hay una iglesia como tal, pero sí hay varias iglesias cercanas importantes emblemáticas e históricas de la ciudad, pero justamente del centro comercial en la parte de atrás, podemos encontrar una pequeña capilla filial, estas son pequeñas capillas pertenecientes a iglesias grandes, qué se encuentra encuentran en zonas donde está un poco retirada esa iglesia de gran majestuosidad y es una manera especial para que también las personas que se les hace un poco dificultoso o lejano poder ir a esas iglesias acercarse a escuchar la santa eucaristía.

Admittedly, there isn’t a church as such in Santa Rosalía, but there are several important, iconic and historic churches nearby, However, right behind the shopping centre, we can find a small branch chapel. These are small chapels belonging to larger churches, located in areas where the main church is a little out of the way; they offer a special way for people who find it a bit difficult or too far to travel to those churches to come and attend Mass.

La pequeña capillita se encuentra pintada de color blanco y color celeste, la misma es bastante pequeñita, justamente en el centro una gran puerta semicircular pintada de color negro, en su parte superior, podemos ver cómo esta se encuentra identificada con su nombre capilla nuestra señora de la Asunción, el significado de sus colores es que hace tributo especial a la virgen María por eso son los colores celestes y blanco se desconoce cuando fue construida esta pequeña capilla, pero por su edificación podemos darnos cuenta que no posee tantos años, pero no deja de ser sencilla y hermosa.

The little chapel is painted white and sky blue; it is quite small. Right in the centre is a large semicircular door painted black, and at the top we can see that it is named ‘Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption’. The colours symbolise a special tribute to the Virgin Mary, which is why they are light blue and white. It is not known when this small chapel was built, but judging by its construction, it is not very old; nevertheless, it remains simple and beautiful.

Posee una cruz justamente en el tope de su edificación, qué estás forman un pequeño arco entre sí para poder sostenerla justamente esta capilla, tiende a colaborar mucho con las fiestas patronales de nuestra señora del Chinquinquirá, es bastante pequeña, pero nos permite adentrarnos a Jesús en este lugar de gran historia, este sector santa Rosalía anteriormente poseía un mercado bastante grande pero hace algunos años fue cerrado por los que los comerciantes realizan su trabajo de manera informal en las calles del mismo.

There is a cross right at the top of the building, which forms a small arch to support the chapel itself. It plays a significant role in the patron saint festivities of Our Lady of Chinquinquirá. Although it is quite small, it allows us to draw closer to Jesus in this place steeped in history. The Santa Rosalía area used to have a fairly large market, but it was closed down a few years ago, so the traders now carry out their work informally on the streets there.
