Marrakech, a fascinating city. A destination completely different from any other. A whole new adventure for me. As much as one gets tired of seeing and hearing everything that is said about this city, it's impossible not to be amazed by such a picturesque and austere culture.

Knowing Marrakech is a way of living the Moroccan culture very different even compared to any other city in the country. It's the city where many stories and ideas that Westerners have of North Africa were born.

And being there for the first time, not knowing not only the culture and religion but also the languages spoken in the city, I accepted as a suggestion to spend our first day in the city to be guided by a local guide who spoke Spanish, my native language.

So I am going to share with you here the pleasant experience after choosing the >>Free tour of Marrakech << offered by the Spanish tour platform Civitatis. I hadn't used it before, because I've always preferred to tour new destinations on my own, distributing my time at my convenience and stopping to take pictures of whatever without feeling pressured.

But it's true that for such an unknown destination I could really use some help. After watching dozens of videos and reading many blogs with other people's experiences, it was understandable that I was very suspicious of my ability to locate myself in the middle of the complex streets of the city and to understand quickly the best way to get around tourists and folks

I will describe in detail the locations we visited on the tour because I think it is a very good route, it doesn't cover all the points of interest of the city but it does focus on the most relevant ones. I will also explain the impressions that the guide gave me with his service.

Marrakech, una ciudad fascinante. Un destino completamente distinto a cualquier otro. Toda una nueva aventura para mí.

Por mucho que uno se canse de ver y escuchar todo lo que se dice de la ciudad, es imposible no asombrarse ante tan pintoresca y austera cultura.

Conocer Marrakech es una forma de vivir la cultura marroquí muy diferente a que en cualquier otra ciudad del país. Es la ciudad de donde nacieron muchas historias e ideas que los occidentales tenemos del norte de Africa.

Y yo estando por primera vez allí, desconociendo no solo la cultura y religión sino también los idiomas que se manejan en la ciudad, acepté como propuesta para pasar nuestro primer día en la ciudad el dejarnos guiar por un guía local que manejara el castellano.

Por lo que voy a relatar aquí la grata experiencia tras decidirnos por el >>Free tour por Marrakech << ofrecido por la plataforma de excursiones española Civitatis. Yo no la había utilizado antes, porque siempre he preferido recorrer los nuevos destinos por mi cuenta, distribuyendo mi tiempo a conveniencia y deteniéndome a hacer fotos de lo que sea sin sentirme presionada.

Pero es verdad que para un destino tan desconocido venía muy bien un poco de ayuda. Tras ver decenas de videos y leer muchos blogs con las experiencias de otras personas, era comprensible que desconfiara mucho de mi capacidad para ubicarme en medio de las complicadas callejuelas de la ciudad y de que llegará a entender rápidamente la mejor forma de desenvolverme entre turistas y citadinos.

Voy a relatar en detalle las locaciones que visitamos en el tour porque creo que es una muy buena opción de recorrido, no cubre todos los puntos de interés de la ciudad pero sí se centra en los mas relevantes. Además de explicar un poco las impresiones que me transmitió el guía con su servicio.

1. Jamaa el Fna Square

The meeting point as well as the first and last stops of the tour was the famous Jamaa el Fna square. It has been documented countless times, I remember seeing it many times in documentaries where they showed the mysterious snake charmers and the busy life of the Moroccan merchant.

One advantage of seeing it for the first time in the morning is that since it is still empty and the merchants have not settled in the middle to offer all their products, you can appreciate how gigantic it is, it seems impossible that it could be crowded with so many people every night.

Very few people were in the place and the few shops open were those offering breakfast and drinks to start the day. We were able to walk around to observe from different angles while waiting for the meeting time to start the freetour.

El punto de encuentro al igual que la primera y últimas paradas del recorrido era la famosísima plaza Jamaa el Fna. Ha sido documentada en infinidad de ocasiones, yo recuerdo haberla visto muchas veces en documentales donde mostraban a los misteriosos encantadores de serpientes y la ajetreada vida del comerciante marroquí.

Una ventaja de verla por primera vez en la mañana es que al estar aún vacía y que los comerciantes no se hayan instalado en medio para ofrecer todos sus productos, es que se puede apreciar lo gigantesca que es, pareciendo imposible que pudiera abarrotarse con tanta gente todas las noches.

Muy pocas personas había en el lugar y los pocos locales abiertos eran los que ofrecían desayunos y bebidas para comenzar el día. Pudimos dar unas vueltas alrededor para observar desde diferentes ángulos mientras esperábamos que fuese la hora del encuentro para comenzar el freetour.

As happens on many occasions, some people who had booked the tour were late, rather they had shown up at the meeting point and then got lost trying to get to an ATM. But this did not delay the departure time of our tour because we had all arrived early.

However while waiting for the manager to organize us with the list of those we had booked to assign us to a guide, I came across a sort of replica of a luxurious lounge with native tableware that a hotel had set up right in front of its entrance.

I wondered if in the homes of ordinary people one would find similarly stylized utensils but from the publicity and the very touristy location of that display I figured it was something more intended to attract the interest of foreigners than to pay homage to the surrounding culture.

At that moment all of us who were waiting were called and we were introduced to Halim who would be our guide on this 4 hour tour of the most emblematic points of the city center of Marrakech.

We set off shortly before 9:30 am and before that the guide took some time to welcome us, explain some basic rules and courtesy words in Arabic and explain briefly how he would manage the tour, all this in perfect Spanish.

Como sucede en muchas ocasiones, algunas personas que habían reservado el tour venían con retraso, mas bien habían aparecido en el punto de encuentro para luego perderse intentando conseguir un cajero automático. Pero esto no retrasó la hora de salida de nuestro tour porque todos habíamos llegado con antelación.

Sin embargo mientras esperábamos que el encargado nos organizara con la lista de los que habíamos reservado para asignarnos a un guía, me encontré una especie de replica de salón lujoso con vajilla autóctona que había dispuesto un hotel justo en frente de su entrada.

Me pregunté si en las casas de la gente corriente uno se encontraría con utensilios igual de estilizados pero por la publicidad y la ubicación tan turística de esa muestra me imaginé que era algo más pensado para atraer el interés de los extranjeros que para homenajear a la cultura del entorno.

En ese momento nos llamaron a todos los que esperábamos y nos presentaron a Halim quien sería nuestro guía en este recorrido de 4 horas de duración por los puntos más emblemáticos del centro de la ciudad de Marrakech.

Nos pusimos en marcha poco antes de las 9:30 am y eso que antes de ello el guía se tomó un tiempo para darnos la bienvenida, explicarnos algunas normas básicas y palabras de cortesía en árabe y explicarnos brevemente como gestionaría el recorrido, todo esto en un perfecto español.

2. Koutoubia Mosque

The first stop on the Civitatis Free Tour once leaving the Jamaa el Fna square, and the second point of interest after the introduction of the guide is the Koutoubia mosque, a symbol of the city and which is said to be the twin of the Giralda of Seville.

This imposing mosque has around it a huge square where prayers are held during the days of the Ramadan because not all attendees fit inside, with a rather curious cemetery and a back park where you can be resting a while.

It was just 9:30 am and the heat was already felt, after giving us a talk with interesting details about the mosque the guide gave us a few minutes to take the photos we wanted and we headed between the arches of the west side of the mosque to walk to the next destination.

La primera parada que se realiza en el Freetour de Civitatis una vez abandonar la plaza Jamaa el Fna, y el segundo punto de interés luego de la introducción del guía es la mezquita * Koutoubia*, un símbolo de la ciudad y del que se dice que es la gemela de la Giralda de Sevilla.

Esta imponente mezquita cuenta a su alrededor con una enorme plaza en la que se realizan los rezos durante los días del Ramadán porque no caben todos los asistentes dentro, con un cementerio bastante curioso y un parque trasero en donde se puede estar descansando un buen rato.

Eran apenas las 9:30 am y el calor ya se hacía sentir, luego de darnos una charla con detalles interesantes sobre la mezquita el guia nos dio unos minutos para hacer las fotos que quisiéramos y nos dirigimos entre los arcos de la zona oeste de la mezquita para caminar hacia el próximo destino.

3. Bab Agnaou Entrance Door to Mechouar-Kasbah district

The third point of interest is one of the great gates of the walls of Marrakech, is one of the most beautiful and ornate. Through it you can access the Jewish quarter and is the Synagogue of the city, although this is not one that contemplates the tour.

It is a bit complicated to take pictures because right in front of it there is a very busy street and you have to pay a lot of attention when crossing it. Our guide gave us a brief reference of the events that took place near the wall and authorized us to take pictures, so here I can present them to you.

Upon entering we found an atmosphere a little more relaxed than that usually found near the square Jamaa el Fna and the guide tells us that there are stores where you can shop more quietly without having to enter the game of bargaining so famous in the big markets called Souks.

El tercer punto de interés es una de las grandes puertas de las murallas de Marrakech, es una de las más bonitas y ornamentadas. Través de ella se accede al barrio judío y se encuentra la Sinagoga de la ciudad, aunque esta no es una para que contempla el tour.

Es un poco complicado hacer fotos porque justo en frente hay una calle muy ajetreada y para la cual hay que prestar mucha atención al momento de cruzar. Nuestro guía nos dio una breve referencia de los hechos que acontecieron cerca de la muralla y nos autorizó a hacer fotos, así que aquí se los puedo presentar.

Al acceder encontramos un ambiente un poco más distendido que el que suele haber cerca de la plaza Jamaa el Fna y nos dice el guía que hay tiendas en las que se pueden hacer compras de forma más tranquila sin tener que entrar en el juego del regateo tan famoso dentro de los grandes mercados llamadosSouks.

I was all the time attentive to the food stalls and typical sweets to not miss the opportunity to try some things between visits, but everything was closed, many of the stores do not open before 12:00 am so I was all the time looking but without the opportunity to buy anything to try.

The stall in the picture offered several typical sweets and was located right in front of our next target so I thought that after the next visit I could take advantage of it, but sadly it was still closed.

Yo estaba todo el rato atenta a los puestos de comida y dulces típicos para no perder la oportunidad de poder probar algunas cosas entre las visitas, pero todo estaba cerrado, muchas de las tiendas no abren antes de las 12:00 am por lo que estuve todo el rato mirando pero sin oportunidad de comprar nada para probar.

En el puesto de venta que esta en la fotografía se ofrecían varios dulces típicos y estaba ubicado justo en frente de nuestro siguiente objetivo así que pensé que al terminar la siguiente visita podría aprovecharlo, pero tristemente seguía cerrado.

4. The Saadian Tombs

The tombs Saadies were the next stop, at this point the guide indicated us that if the majority agreed we could enter to visit them, he consulted him because the entrance to this enclosure is not free and we had to cover the individual expenses.

The entrance fee is 70 dh which would be approximately 7,00 €.

We decided that we all wanted to see them and I don't think anyone regretted it, I found it the most worthwhile visit of the whole tour and really enjoyed the decorations on all the buildings and the internal gardens.

Las tumbas Saadies eran la próxima parada, en este punto el guia nos indicó que si la mayoría estaba de acuerdo podíamos entrar a visitarlas, lo consultó porque la entrada a este recinto no es gratuita y debíamos cubrir los gastos individuales.

La entrada tiene un costo de 70 dh que seríaaproximadamente 7,00 €.

Decidimos que todos queríamos verlas y no creo que alguien se haya arrepentido, a mí me pareció la visita más valiosa de todo el tour y disfruté mucho de las decoraciones en todos los edificios y de los jardines internos.

There is an interesting history behind this monument, which the guide explains in a very interesting way. From what little I remember it was a structure that was hidden for many years because the kings were interested in hiding the existence of that ancient dynasty in their territory.

I will not make spoilers because I think it is nice to discover the history while touring the enclosure. It is also surprising the explanation of the materials used to decorate the different tombs, I remember that they imported high quality materials such as Italian marble, apparently the Saadie dynasty surrounded itself with many luxuries.

Hay una historia interesante detrás de este monumento, que el guía explica de forma bastante interesante. De lo poco que recuerdo fue una estructura que estuvo muchos años ocultas debido a que los reyes les interesaba ocultar la existencia de esa antigua dinastía en su territorio.

No haré spoilers porque creo que es bonito descubrir la historia mientras se recorre el recinto. También es sorprendente la explicación de los materiales empleados para decorar las diferentes tumbas, recuerdo que importaban materiales de mucha calidad como el mármol italiano, al parecer la dinastía Saadie se rodeaba de muchos lujos.

There are many types of tombs depending on the hierarchy within the nobility, and there are also those on the outside decorating the gardens, we were told that these outer tombs belonged to military men who earned the respect of the royalty, so to speak, and had the right to be buried there.

Something curious about Moroccan culture in general that is also true of these tombs is that the tombs never have any kind of identification.

It is really a very nice place and worth a visit, it is beautiful the way they used tiles and ceramics to decorate everything. I am going to leave different photos of several rooms where the sultans, their children and women are buried separately.

Hay muchos tipos de tumbas dependiendo de la jerarquía dentro de la nobleza, y también las hay en la parte exterior decorando los jardines, nos indicaron que estas tumbas exteriores pertenecían a militares que se ganaban el respeto de los miembros de la realeza, por llamarlo de alguna manera, y tenían derecho a ser enterrados ahí.

Algo curioso de la cultura Marroquí en general que también se cumple en estas tumbas es que las tumbas no tienen ningún tipo de identificación nunca.

Realmente es un lugar muy bonito y que vale mucho la pena visitar, es preciosa la forma en que emplearon los azulejos y cerámica para decorar todo. Voy a dejar distintas fotos de varias salas en donde se encuentran sepultados separados los sultanes, de sus hijos y de las mujeres.

5. Mechouar-Kasbah district

Half of the tour is reached with the visit to the Jewish quarter, where we made several stops to listen to the guide's explanation about the influence and difference of the Jewish culture and the impact it caused in the environment.

We were told about the meaning and history of the symbol of the hand of Fatima, which I honestly do not remember, but I do remember that the guide told us that there is a kind of legend that indicates that once a woman mistreated a cat and was punished by a deity, that is why in Marrakech there are so many cats in the street and people do not hurt them.

La mitad del recorrido se alcanza con la visita al barrio judío, en donde realizábamos varias paradas para escuchar la explicación del guía sobre la influencia y diferencia de la cultura judía y el impacto que causaba en el entorno.

Nos comentaron sobre el significado y la historia del símbolo de la mano de Fátima, que sinceramente no recuerdo, pero sí me acuerdo de que el guía nos contó que hay una especie de leyenda que indica que una vez una mujer maltrató a un gato y fue castigada por una deidad, por eso es que en Marrakech hay tantos gatos en la calle y la gente no los lastima.

We walked through the streets of the Jewish quarter and we could see many pickle stores and typical things that I could not stop to try because we were going straight to the points of interest.

The guide made us detail that in that neighborhood the houses have windows to the outside, something that differentiates them from Moroccan houses, because in their culture they avoid in any way that you can see how they live in their home, they protect their wealth and women from the view of others.

A position that I find difficult to share but interesting to discover.

Caminamos por las calles del barrio judío y pudimos ver muchas tiendas de encurtidos y cosas típicas que no pude detenerme a probar porque íbamos directos a los puntos de interés.

El guía nos hizo detallar que en ese barrio las casas cuentan con ventanas al exterior, cosa que las diferencia de las casas marroquíes, porque en su cultura evitan de cualquier forma que pueda verse como viven ellos en su hogar, protegen sus riquezas y mujeres de la vista de los demás.

Una posición que me cuesta compartir pero que es interesante descubrir.

We saw many stores of typical products, beautiful snapshots with the colors of the city. Almost all the handicraft stores were already open and the streets were filled with beautiful colors.

Vimos muchas tiendas de productos típicos, instantáneas preciosas con los colores de la ciudad. Ya estaban casi todas las tiendas de artesanías abiertas y las calles se llenaron de colores preciosos.

6. Gnawa musician

In the midst of so much color and walking through narrow streets, the guide surprised us by taking us to listen to an indigenous exponent of Moroccan popular music.

He gave us a demonstration of the typical music with different instruments, the Gmbri which is similar to a guitar and has a very low sound similar to the bass and also played the * Qarqaba* which are like a kind of metal castanets.

It was fun to listen to him because the artist transmitted a lot of joy despite not understanding any of his songs. It was funny to see how he moved his hat to the rhythm of the music he played.

He also offered us to sit next to him to listen to him play and take some pictures with him, I took advantage of it and decided to try to shake my hat for a while.

En medio de tanto color y caminar entre callejuelas el guía nos sorprendió al acercarnos a escuchar un rato a un exponente indígena de la música popular Marroquí.

Nos hizo una demostración de la música típica con distintos instrumentos, el Gmbri que es parecido a una guitarra y tiene un sonido muy grave parecido al bajo y también tocó las * Qarqaba* que son como una especie de castañuelas de metal.

Fue divertido escucharlo porque el artista transmitía mucha alegría a pesar de no entender nada de sus cantos. Era curioso ver como movía el gorro al ritmo de la música que tocaba.

Además nos ofreció sentarnos a su lado a escucharle tocar y hacernos alguno foto a su lado, yo lo aproveché y decidí intentar agitar el sombrero un rato.

7. Souk Al Khire.

Then we made a brief and somewhat controversial visit to a typical food market. I say controversial because some members of the tour did not like it, they thought it was ugly and unnecessary to visit it, I think they found the experience of being among chickens, smells of all kinds and the hustle and bustle of vendors unpleasant.

I liked it a lot, I think that part of understanding the culture is to enter as far as possible in the daily life of the locals, but of course that depends on the type of tourism that each one wants to do.

I had intentions of approaching to witness the process of making the sheets of filo pastry prepared in a local market, but as most were in a hurry to leave I could only see it from afar. It is a pity because it is handmade with incredible agility.

Después hicimos una breve y algo controvertida visita a un mercado típico de comidas. Digo controvertida porque a algunos integrantes del tour no les gustó, les pareció feo e innecesario visitarlo, creo que les pareció desagradable la experiencia de estar entre gallinas, olores de todas clases y el ajetreo de los vendedores.

A mí me gustó mucho, yo creo que parte de entender la cultura está en adentrarse en la medida de lo posible en el día a día de los lugareños, pero claro eso depende del tipo de turismo que cada uno quiera hacer.

Yo tenía intenciones de acercarme a presenciar el proceso de elaboración de las hojas de pasta filo que preparaban en un local de ese mercado, pero como la mayoría estaba apresurado para salir solo lo pude divisar desde lejos. Es una lástima porque lo elaboran artesanalmente con una agilidad increíble.

8. Place des Ferblantiers

This location has its name in French, which makes one think that it is one of the least ancient points in the tour, the Tinsmiths' Square where you can find many decorative objects such as lamps and teapots.

Although the most striking are the natural perfume stores, which offer different types of soaps and products such as the striking dried cactus flowers of all colors that are used to scent and decorate.

There is a very attractive spice store that has arranged at the entrance a sample with different designs made with these dried flowers, looks very nice and invites you to approach, in fact they tell you that they have the name of the city ready for customers to make the respective colorful photo after your purchase.

Esta ubicación tiene su nombre en francés lo que hace pensar que es una de los puntos menos antiguos del recorrido, la Plaza de los Hojalateros en donde se encuentran muchos objetos de decoración como lamparas y teteras.

Aunque lo más llamativo son las tiendas de perfumes naturales, que ofrecen distintos tipos de jabones y productos como las llamativas flores secas de cactus de todos colores que se utilizan para aromatizar y decorar.

Hay una tienda de especias muy llamativa que ha dispuesto en su entrada una muestra con distintos diseños elaborados con estas flores secas, luce muy bonito e invita a acercarse, de hecho te dicen que tienen el nombre de la ciudad dispuesto para que los clientes se hagan la respectiva foto colorida después de su compra.

9.The Bahia Palace

One of the last stops of the tour is also done in consensus, because you have to pay the entrance fee which is the same as in the Saadi tombs 7,00 €. In spite of agreeing to enter, some people decided to stay outside to rest.

Before entering the guide explained to us that although in Morocco the official languages are Arabic and French, in the city of Marrakech a third language is included in almost everything, the Bereber that corresponds to the indigenous culture and is written with very peculiar symbols.

The three languages can be seen on the entrance tickets for tourist attractions where we could appreciate the difference. It is also used in all official organizations, media and signage in the area.

We went inside and were able to see the different rooms of the palace of the favorite wife of the Sultan's advisor, Bahia. It is quite spacious and has decorations from all the cultures that are mixed in the city such as Jewish, Arabic and indigenous.

Una de las ultimas paradas del tour también se hace en consenso, pues hay que pagar el precio de la entrada que es el mismo que en las tumbas Saadies 7,00 €. A pesar de estar de acuerdo en acceder algunas personas decidieron quedarse fuera a descansar.

Antes de entrar el guía nos explicó que en aunque en Marruecos las lenguas oficiales son el árabe y la francés, en la ciudad de Marrakech se incluye en casi todo un tercer idioma, el Bereber que corresponde a la cultura indígena y se escribe con unos símbolos muy peculiares.

Las tres lenguas se aprecian en los boletos de entrada para las atracciones turísticas en donde pudimos apreciar la diferencia. También es utilizada en todos los organismos oficiales , medios de comunicación y señalización de la zona.

Nosotros entramos y pudimos conocer las distintas estancias del palacio de la esposa favorita del asesor del sultán, Bahia. Es bastante amplio y cuenta con decoración de todas las culturas que se mezclan en la ciudad como la judía, la árabe y la indígena.

The palace has several rooms and gardens all adorned with beautiful details made by hand with a very laborious work that lasted many years.

There are also ornate rooms around the central gardens that as I remember were used to tend to political matters and depending on who you were dealing with you were attended to in a particular room adorned with Arab, Jewish or Berber symbols.

El palacio cuenta con diversas estancias y jardines todos adornados con hermosos detalles hechos a manos con un trabajo muy laborioso que duró muchos años.

También hay estancias ornamentadas al rededor de los jardines centrales que según recuerdo se utilizaban para a tender cuestiones políticas y dependiendo de con quién se trataba se le atendía en una estancia en particular adornada con símbolos árabes, judíos o bereberes.

Among all the rooms I really liked the design used in a small bathtub with green mosaics where children were taught to wash properly according to their dogmas.

A curious detail that the guide told us is that the children of the sultans lived in these palaces until they began adolescence, at which time they were forbidden to reside with the wives and employees of the sultan.

We were also told that the only men who were allowed to work and live in these rooms had to agree to have their genitals mutilated. And on special occasions when male musicians were invited to play at private receptions, they had to do so blindfolded.

These last images of the palace are photos of the special room where these parties were held in which it was a single man entertained by many women.

De entre todas las estancias me gustó mucho el diseño empleado en una pequeña bañera de aseo con mosaicos verdes en donde enseñaban a los niños a lavarse de forma correcta según sus dogmas.

Un detalle curioso que nos contó el guía es que los hijos de los sultanes vivían en estos palacios hasta que comenzaban la adolescencia, momento desde el que tenían prohibido residir junto a las esposas y empleadas del sultán.

También nos comentaron que los únicos hombres que permitían trabajar y residir en estos aposentos tenían que aceptar que se les mutilaran los genitales. Y en las ocasiones especiales que invitaban a músicos masculinos a tocar en recepciones privadas estos tenían que hacerlo con los ojos vendados.

Estas ultimas imágenes del palacio son fotos de la estancia especial en donde se realizaban esas fiestas en las que era un único hombre agasajado por muchas mujeres.

10. Herboriste Le Musée

The last tour of the Freetour is a glimpse of a part of the great Zoco of Marrakech, the huge markets where it is very easy to get lost because there are acres of stores with all kinds of merchandise available to the interested party.

To culminate the tour they take us to a typical Moroccan pharmacy where they give a free and quite extensive talk about the natural medicine used in their culture and the methods with which they elaborate their medicines and cosmetics. They also offer spices and teas as these are part of a healthy diet that maintains well-being.

El último recorrido del Freetour es un vistazo de una parte de gran Zoco de Marrakech, los enormes mercados en donde es muy fácil perderse porque son hectáreas de tiendas con todo tipo de mercancía a disposición del interesado.

Para culminar el recorrido nos llevan a una farmacia típica marroquí en la que realizan una charla gratuita y bastante extensa sobre la medicina natural que se emplea en su cultura y los métodos con los que elaboran sus medicinas y cosméticos. También ofrecen especias y tés pues estos forman parte de de una alimentación saludable que mantiene el bienestar.

The explanation is very dynamic, the store manager spoke quite correct Spanish and allowed us to take as many photos as we wanted. While talking about a product she offered us to try it, explained the method of use and gave us advice for the most common ailments today, there was even some "free" massage with a tip requested of course.

Between talks, jokes, demonstrations and of course the corresponding offer and sale, it took almost an hour to stay in this place. The offer is very wide and the way they convince you to buy something is incredible, people in Morocco are used to sell and know how to do it.

I bought things of course, I fell into temptation and even without realizing it, but I will talk about that in more detail soon.

La explicación es muy dinámica, la encargada de la tienda hablaba un castellano bastante correcto y nos permitió hacer todas las fotos que quisiéramos. Mientras hablaba de un productos nos ofrecía probarlo, nos explicaba el método de empleo y nos aconsejaba cosas para las dolencias mas comunes en la actualidad, incluso hubo algún masaje "gratis" con propina solicitada claro.

Entre charlas, bromas, demostraciones y por supuesto la correspondiente oferta y venta, se tomó casi una hora la estancia en este local. La oferta es muy amplia y la forma en que te convencen para que compres alguna cosa es increíble, la gente en Marruecos está acostumbrada a vender y sabe cómo hacer.

Compré cosas claro, caí en la tentación y hasta sin darme cuenta, pero de eso hablaré con más detalle próximamente.

While we walked the last meters accompanied by the guide, who would leave us again in the square from where we started, we were able to share different impressions with him.

He recommended us a Hamman for tourists that is reliable and where they could guarantee a satisfactory experience to the one interested. It is called Koutubia spa and although I lost the brochure it seemed to me that the prices were affordable although I had seen some that offered the same services for less.

But I couldn't compare because I didn't try any of them and it wasn't in my plans to go and have someone shower or massage me. Again it depends on your individual concept of how you want to enjoy the city, this is one of the activities that most people are interested in, but I was not curious about it.

An important thing that he dedicated a few minutes to before the end of the activity was how to move around inside the huge soco when we wanted to make purchases. He gave us interesting facts about how the common bargaining process that all the merchants use in that market works and he indicated us some ways of bargaining that we could practice on our own later on.

It is important that they take some time to explain that because it is very different from what we are used to, plus during that process one tends to feel uncomfortable or out of place because the traders are not usually so good at handling foreign languages. But I can talk at length about that another time.

The guide also took his time to explain the typical dishes of the city and where we could go to enjoy a good meal.

Since it was already 13:30 almost everyone present was very interested in this detail, so I decided to leave space for them to ask questions first and waited until the end to stay with the guide and ask him more precise questions about the gastronomic points that I had planned to visit, which according to him were very accurate and offered me other options to contrast culturally what I wanted to try.

Mientras recorríamos los últimos metros acompañados del guía, que nos dejaría nuevamente en la plaza de donde partimos, pudimos compartir distintas impresiones con él.

nos recomendó un Hamman para turistas que es de fiar y en el que podrían garantizar una experiencia satisfactoria al interesado. Se llama Koutubia spa y aunque perdí el folleto me pareció que los precios eran accesibles aunque había visto algunos que ofrecían los mismos servicios por menos.

Pero yo no podría comparar porque no probé ninguno y no estaba entre mis planes ir a que alguien me duchara o me masajeara. Nuevamente depende del concepto individual de cómo se quiera disfrutar la ciudad, esta es una de las actividades que a mas gente interesa, pero que a mí no me despierta ningún tipo de curiosidad.

Un detalle importante y al que dedicó algunos minutos antes de finalizar la actividad fue la forma de movernos dentro del enorme zoco cuando quisiéramos hacer compras. Nos ofreció datos interesantes sobre cómo funciona el común proceso del regateo que utilizan todos los comerciantes de ese mercado y nos indicó algunas formas de regatear que pudimos por en practica por nuestra cuenta más tarde.

Es importante que se tomen un tiempo para explicar eso porque es muy diferente a lo que solemos estar acostumbrados, además durante ese proceso uno tiende a sentirse incómodo o desubicado porque los comerciantes no suelen manejar tan bien los idiomas extranjeros. Pero puedo hablar más largo y tendido de eso en otra oportunidad.

El guía también se tomó su tiempo para explicarnos los platos típicos de la ciudad y a donde podríamos acudir para disfrutar de una buena comida.

Puesto que era ya la 13:30 casi todos los presentes se interesaron mucho en este detalle, así que yo decidí dejarles espacio para que preguntaran con primero y esperé hasta el final para quedarnos con el guía y hacerle preguntas más precisas sobre los puntos gastronómicos que yo tenía pensado visitar, que según él eran muy acertados y me ofreció otras opciones para contrastar culturalmente lo que deseaba probar.

Final impressions on Civitatis Freetour.

The concept of Freetour in Marrakech of this company is to live a tourist experience in the hands of a local who manages to share with you his experiences and knowledge about the city that he knows so well, these guides also prepare a lot because they have in their heads a lot of information about historical events and cultural differences.

After the experience and depending on how you have lived it normally we are expected to give a payment according to what we believe convenient, the name of freetour is rather symbolic, although there is the possibility that if you did not like the experience at all you do not offer any money in return or do as some of the members of our group, who disappeared in the middle of the tour, although I see that a little disrespectful but well everyone acts according to the plans that lead.

It is normal to give a property between 5,00 € and 10,00 € per person, this is a guideline figure, you can pay more or less as you see fit.

Marrakech lives a lot of tourism and although most people do not handle other languages, those who are accustomed to tourism are defended with elementary phrases in different languages, but to my surprise our guide in this experience, Halim, had an excellent command of the language, which greatly facilitated to ask questions and clarify various concerns.

Halim was always attentive to the group he was leading, answering our questions and trying to offer alternatives to the tour participants who were interested in other activities. Some people told him that they preferred to visit the Synagogue in the Jewish quarter instead of the Bahia palace for example, he told them how to approach and the information about the access but clarified that he could not accompany them or divert the group because that visit was not included in the tour they were taking.

The tour has a duration of 4 hours, being more extensive than some Freetour offered by the same platform in other destinations and covers much of the most important monuments of the city. I thought it was good that they did not take into account the gardens of the city because there are many and very large and these can visit you on your own without the need for guides.

Although the final visit to the pharmacy is extended, it is really appreciated that after three hours walking and visiting monuments you can rest quietly in an air-conditioned room so I have no complaint about it, I thought it would be extra because I was not interested in that aspect but I discovered many interesting things about Moroccan culture through their healthy customs.

In my opinion it was an experience of 10, it was the first freetour I did and the truth was that I had heard good things but I did not expect so much detail and information coverage. So from my experience is something that I highly recommend to go to this city that is different from the western culture, which has so much to see and learn from and that on our own we could possibly miss some detail that we could enjoy.

After the final indications the guide did not ask us at any time to make the payment for the service provided, each person gave him the money he thought appropriate according to his experience on the tour, I was surprised to see that some people gave him less than the recommended 5,00 € although the guide did not react with surprise or displeasure.

I understand that many of us are on a tight budget or that someone was not completely satisfied with the experience according to what they would have preferred to see, but I believe that the effort and dedication of the guide should not be underestimated. Again this is very subjective and is a personal decision.

In our case we quickly concluded that he deserved without any doubt the 10,00 € because he was very attentive and the poor guy did not stop talking, without being boring and telling entertaining anecdotes at all times. As we stayed until the end to ask him about some things of gastronomic interest, he allowed himself a big show of gratitude because apparently we were the only ones who gave him the recommended 10,00 €.

I was surprised because I had read that there are people who even offer more for these experiences, but I don't have a lot of money either, although I do think it is important to value correctly the work done by any person. At the moment of giving him the 20,00 € because there were two of us, he was very effusive telling us "oh very well Venezuela, long live Venezuela" because earlier he had asked us where we were from.

He told us very saddened that he regretted the situation that our country of origin was going through, because he remembered that in his adolescence he worked as a carpet seller in a store where many tourists came and according to him the people who bought the most beautiful carpets, expensive and in quantity were the Venezuelans, he was referring to almost 40 years ago when the circumstances were very different from the current reality.

In conclusion, he was a very empathetic, warm and helpful person. He allowed us to take a final picture with him as a souvenir in which I appear with the user recarvajal, who was my partner in this adventure, and asked us to recommend his name when reviewing the activity within the platform that offers it and in case someone was interested in enjoying the same experience.

It was a very good choice by recarvajal that we started to get to know the city through this Free Tour, it allowed us to get safely into their customs and culture to be a little calmer later walking on our own. Highly, highly recommended.

Impresiones finales sobre el Freetour de Civitatis.

El concepto de Freetour en Marrakech de esta empresa es vivir una experiencia turística de manos de un lugareño que logre transmitirte sus experiencias y conocimiento sobre la ciudad que tan bien conoce.Estos guías también se preparan mucho porque tienen en la cabeza una gran cantidad de información sobre sucesos históricos y diferencias culturales.

Posterior a la experiencia y según como lo hayas vivido normalmente se espera que demos un pago según lo que creamos conveniente, el nombre de freetour es mas bien simbólico, aunque está la posibilidad de que si no te gustó nada la experiencia no ofrezcas nada de dinero a cambio o hagas como algunos de los miembros de nuestro grupo, que desaparecieron en medio del tour, aunque esto ultimo lo veo un poco feo pero bueno cada uno actúa según los planes que lleve.

Lo normal es que se entregue una propina entre 5,00 € y 10,00 € por persona, esto es una cifra orientativa, puedes pagar mas o menos según creas conveniente.

Marrakech vive mucho del turísmo y a pesar de que la mayoría de las personas no manejan otros idiomas, los que están acostumbrados al turismo se defienden con frases elementales en distintos idiomas, pero para mi sorpresa nuestro guía en esta experiencia, Halim, tenía un excelente dominio de la lengua, lo que facilitaba mucho poder hacer preguntas y aclarar distintas inquietudes.

Halim estuvo en todo momento atento al grupo que dirigía, respondía nuestras dudas e intentaba ofrecer alternativas a los asistentes del tour que estuviesen interesados en otras actividades. Algunas personas le comentaron que preferían visitar la Sinagoga en el barrio judío en vez del palacio Bahía por ejemplo, él les indicó como acercarse y la información sobre el acceso pero aclarando que no podía acompañarles ni desviar al grupo porque esa visita no estaba contemplada en el recorrido que ellos realizaban.

El recorrido tiene una duración de 4 horas, siendo más amplio que algunos Freetour ofrecidos por la misma plataforma en otros destinos y cubre gran parte de los monumentos más relevantes de la ciudad. Me pareció bien que no tuviesen en cuenta los jardines de la ciudad porque son muchos y muy amplios y estos pueden visitarte por cuenta propia sin necesidad de guías.

A pesar de que la visita final a la farmacia se extiende, realmente es de agradecer que luego de tres horas caminando y visitando monumentos se pe pueda descansar tranquilamente en un salón con aire acondicionado así que no tengo queja de ello, pensaba que estaría de más porque no me interesaba ese aspecto pero descubrí muchas cosas interesantes de la cultura marroquí a través de sus saludables costumbres.

En mi opinión fue una experiencia de 10, era el primer freetour que hacía y la verdad había escuchado cosas buenas pero no me esperaba tanto detalle y cobertura de información. Así que desde mi experiencia es algo que recomiendo mucho al ir a está ciudad que es tán diferente a la cultura occidental, que tiene tanto que ver y de donde aprender y que por nuestra cuenta posiblemente pueda escapársenos algún detalle que pudiéramos disfrutar.

Luego de las indicaciones finales el guía no nos solicitó en ningún momento que le hiciéramos el pago por el servicio prestado, cada persona le entregaba el dinero que creía conveniente según su experiencia en el tour, pude fijarme con sorpresa que algunos le entregaban menos de los 5,00 € recomendados aunque el guía no reaccionaba con sorpresa ni desagrado.

Entiendo que muchos vayamos justos de presupuesto o que alguien no quedara del todo satisfecho con la experiencia según lo que hubiese preferido contemplar, pero yo creo que el esfuerzo y dedicación del guía no debía ser menospreciado. De nuevo esto es muy subjetivo y es una decisión personal.

En nuestro caso concluimos rápidamente que se merecía sin duda alguno los 10,00 € porque fue muy atento y el pobre no paraba de hablar, sin ser aburrida y contando anécdotas entretenidas en todo momento. Como nos quedamos hasta el final para consultarle algunas cosas de interés gastronómico se permitió una gran muestra de agradecimiento pues al parecer fuimos los únicos que le dimos el tope recomendado de 10,00 €.

Me sorprende porque había leído que hay gente que incluso ofrece más por estas experiencias, pero yo tampoco es que dispongo de mucho dinero aunque sí creo que es importante valorar de forma correcta el trabajo que realiza cualquier persona. Al momento de entregarle los 20,00 € porque éramos dos, fue muy efusivo diciéndonos "oh muy bien Venezuela, qué viva Venezuela" porque más temprano nos había preguntado nuestra procedencia.

Nos comentó muy apesadumbrado que lamentaba la situación que atravesaba nuestro país de origen, pues recordaba que en su adolescencia trabajaba como vendedor de alfombras en una tienda en donde acudían muchos turistas y según él las personas que compraban las alfombras más bonitas, caras y en cantidad eran los Venezolanos, se refería a casi 40 años atrás cuando las circunstancias eran muy distintas a la realidad actual.

En fin una persona muy empática, cálida y colaboradora. Nos permitió hacernos una fotografía final con él de recuerdo en la que aparezco junto el usuario recarvajal, quien fue mi compañero en esta aventura, y nos pidió que recomendáramos su nombre al reseñar la actividad dentro de la plataforma que la ofrece y por si alguna persona estuviese interesada en disfrutar de la misma experiencia.

Fue una muy buena elección por parte de recarvajal que comenzarámos a conocer la ciudad mediante este Freetour, nos permitió adentrarnos con seguridad en sus costumbres y cultura para estar un poco más tranquilos posteriormente caminando por nuestra cuenta. Muy, muy recomendado.
