When I remember my walks through this city, the expression of confusion that filled my face immediately comes to mind, because every time I went forward and tried to understand the mixture of structures that arose in my path, I just couldn't

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean that I didn't feel comfortable with it, but I found it difficult to understand the sense of its architecture. There were times when, trying to take a photo, I simply gave up on the idea of capturing a scene because it didn't seem possible, from my humble pedestrian location, convey what my eyes were seeing. There was simply no symmetry possible in some of the images.

But that doesn't mean I couldn't enjoy the tour through its streets, parks and monuments. Ah, of course! always keeping in mind to avoid hanging around too much in the Bahnhofsviertel, the red light district of the city, where I already had a >> brief experience << nothing to be afraid of but to be aware of when strolling around.

Demos un paseo en Frankfurt am Main 🇩🇪

Cuando recuerdo mis paseos por esta ciudad, me viene inmediatamente a la mente, la expresión de confusión que llenaba mi rostro, cada vez que avanzaba e intentaba entender la mezcla de estructuras que surgían a mi paso.

No me malinterpreten, no quiero decir que no me sintiera cómoda con ello, sino que me costaba entender el sentido de su arquitectura. Hubo momentos en los que, intentando hacer alguna foto, simplemente desistí en la idea de capturar una escena porque no me parecía posible, desde mi humilde ubicación peatonal, transmitir lo que percibían mis ojos. Simplemente no había simetría posible en las imágenes.

Pero eso no significa que no pudiera disfrutar el recorrido a través de sus calles, parques y monumentos. ¡Ah, claro! siempre teniendo en cuenta evitar merodear mucho por el Bahnhofsviertel, el barrio rojo de la ciudad, en el que ya tuve una >>breve experiencia<< nada más llegar, nada de lo que temer pero si de lo que ser consciente al pasear.

Wandering through the city

I think that a few hours later, the idea of comparing these disparate architectural models that coexist, in almost every place, with greater concurrence, begins to be very entertaining.

The huge commercial skyscrapers that draw much of the city's skyline, stand in the background of the imposing historic structures that managed to stay standing after being restored, having been affected by the tragic history of bombings in this city.

Walking near the headquarters of the European Central Bank or along the crowded Zeil shopping street, makes you feel like being in a very modern city that does not accommodate old spaces, so it is surprising to find that, within walking distance of these places, you can enjoy a more traditional and classic design in its architecture.

I couldn't experience the panoramic view of the city because, at the time I was there, the observation decks of the Main Tower were closed to the public, that's the thing about traveling in late winter, but it was interesting to see the well-known € symbol structure so often seen in the news, as well as the modern pit-shaped exterior design of the MyZeil shopping mall, a structure that I still find impressive.

Then you can see how there are many other structures throughout the city with a more classic design that manages to capture our attention despite not being historical places or recognized as heritage of the city.

For example, the side design of the CineStar Metropolis had seemed very striking and made me think that it was a special cinema with some historical museum, but as I went around the building I could see that it was a very ordinary structure where there are only commercial movie theaters.

A similar thing happened to me with the medieval tower Eschenheimer Turm, a historic structure that suddenly appears in the middle of the city and in which there is a restaurant on the first floor. It seemed strange to me that it was not isolated as a monument, but I wrote down the location to make a further visit another time and try what they had to offer.

I also took some pictures of the art gallery Die Schirn and an old train shed Bockenheimer Depot, because they seemed to me more conservative and interesting structures, but I cannot fail to mention how curious I found a huge luxurious hotel that looked like a ministry, I laughed for a while after understanding that it was not a public building, it was the Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof.

Creo que después de unas horas, comienza a ser muy entretenida la idea de contrastar esos modelos de arquitectura tan dispares que conviven, en casi todos los lugares, con mayor concurrencia.

Los enormes rascacielos comerciales que dibujan gran parte del skyline de la ciudad, se mantienen al fondo de las imponentes estructuras históricas que han logrado mantenerse en pie tras ser restauradas, luego de haber sido afectadas por la trágica historia de bombardeos en la ciudad.

Caminar cerca de la sede del Banco central Europeo o por la abarrotada calle comercial Zeil, te hace sentir que estás en una ciudad muy moderna que no da cabida a espacios antiguos, por eso resulta sorprendente encontrar que, a poca distancia de estos lugares, se pueda disfrutar de un diseño más autóctono y clásico en su arquitectura.

No pude disfrutar de la panorámica de la ciudad porque, en el momento que estuve allí, los miradores de la Main Tower estaban cerrados al público, es lo que tiene viajar a finales de invierno, pero fue interesante ver en directo la muy conocida estructura del símbolo del € que tanto se ve en las noticias, al igual que ver el moderno diseño exterior en forma de hoyo del centro comercial MyZeil, una estructura que no deja de parecerme impresionante.

Luego se puede apreciar como hay muchas otras estructuras a lo largo de la ciudad con un diseño más clásico que logra captar nuestra atención a pesar de no ser lugares históricos o reconocidos como patrimonio de la ciudad.

Por ejemplo, el diseño lateral del CineStar Metropolis me había parecido muy llamativo y me hizo pensar en que era una sala especial con algún museo histórico, pero al rodear el edificio pude comprobar que era una estructura muy corriente en donde solo hay salas de cine comerciales.

Algo parecido me pasó con la torre medieval Eschenheimer Turm, una estructura histórica que aparece de repente en medio de la ciudad y en la que hay un restaurante en su planta baja. Me pareció extraño que no estuviese aislado como monumento, pero me apunté la ubicación para realizar en otro momento una visita más detallada y probar lo que ofrecían.

También hice alguna foto a la galería de arte Die Schirn y a un antiguo galpón de trenes Bockenheimer Depot, porque me parecieron estructuras más conservadoras e interesantes, pero no puedo dejar d mencionar lo curioso que me pareció un enorme hotel de esos lujosos que tenía aspecto de ministerio, me reí un rato luego de entender que no era un edificio público, se trata del Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof.

Börse Frankfurt

A curious anecdote was to come across a small protest in front of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. I went there to see the iconic bear and bull structure Bulle & Bär, which represents the idea of the investor. My intention was to get a photo of that place, but it was quite complicated due to the posters and gatherings that were being held.

However, I think it is important to document these events, so I tried to get a picture that would show the reason for the protest without having to disturb the participants. The pictures didn't turn out to be very striking, but they were expressing themselves against the stock management of an armament company, while proclaiming No to armament!.

Una anécdota curiosa fue encontrarme con una pequeña manifestación en frente de la Bolsa de frankfurt. Me dirigí a este lugar para ver la emblemática estructura del oso y el toro Bulle & Bär, que representa la idea del inversor. Mi intención era obtener una foto de ese lugar, pero fue bastante complicado debido a los carteles y concentraciones que se estaban generando.

Sin embargo me parece importante documentar estos sucesos, por lo que intente conseguir alguna imagen que mostrara el motivo de la protesta sin tener que molestar a los manifestantes. No resultaron fotos muy sorprendentes, pero se expresaban en contra de la gestión de acciones de una empresa de armamentos, mientras proclamaban ¡No al armamento!.

Café Hauptwache

It was necessary to have a rest moment before continuing with the tour of the city and as we came across this beautiful building that houses a cafe inside, we decided to stop for a while and quietly have a coffee, it was the moment of total disconnection and it did not occur to me to take the usual photo of my cup of coffee, just kept myself entertained with the company.

At the time I thought this historic building was the only one that had been preserved after the bombings of WWII, something I thought I had read at some point, but later found out it wasn't true. I really have no idea because I didn't think to ask the owners of the place nd I didn't go on a tour where curiosities of the city are explained to you.

One thing we did do when we started moving again, was to stop at one of the many bakeries of the Der Bäcker Eifler chain in the city, to buy some snacks on the way to the next destination. I had been in the city for some time already and hadn't tried my first pretzel so I was really looking forward to buying one.

We stopped at one of the branches that didn't seem so crowded and despite the many things there, I didn't hesitate to choose a pretzel with poppy seeds that caught all my attention, it was called Tigerbrezel referring to a tiger, it must have some resemblance.

Something I learned there is that this type of pastry made with the dough of the prtezel, is called Laugengebäck in German and it is something I had no idea, I thought they were just bretzel, all along.

Era necesario un momento de descanso antes de continuar con el recorrido por la ciudad y como nos encontramos con este hermoso edificio que alberga el Café Hauptwache en su interior, decidimos parar un rato y tomar tranquilamente un café, fue el momento de desconexión total y no se me ocurrió hacer la usual foto de mi taza de café, me mantenía entretenida con la compañía.

En ese momento creí que este edificio histórico era el único que se había conservado luego de los bombardeos de la segunda guerra mundial, algo que pensé haber leído en algún momento, pero que posteriormente me pareció descubrir que no era cierto. No tengo idea realmente porque no se me ocurrió preguntar a los dueños del local y tampoco hice algún tour en donde le explican a uno las curiosidades de la ciudad.

Lo que sí hicimos al comenzar a movernos nuevamente, fue parar en una de las muchas panaderías de la cadena Der Bäcker Eifler que hay en la ciudad, para comprar algunos snack de camino al siguiente destino. Ya llevaba algo de tiempo en la ciudad y no había probado mi primer pretzel así que tenía muchas ganas de comprar uno.

Nos detuvimos en una de las sucursales que no parecía tan abarrotada y a pesar de las muchas cosas que había, no dude en elegir un pretzel con semillas de amapola que captó toda mi atención, se llamada Tigerbrezel haciendo referencia a un tigre, algo de parecido tendrá que tener.

Algo que aprendí ahí es que ese tipo de bolleria elaborada con la masa de los prtezel, se llama Laugengebäck en alemán y es algo de lo que no tenía idea, pensaba que eran simplemente bretzel, en cualquier momento.

Looking for some shelter in the cloudy days, we decided to start our way along the schaumainkai street that runs along the banks of the Main River, to reach the museum area. It is a walk that is certainly more beautiful in summer, but I find it just as pleasant to do, given the choice between buildings and views of the river.

During the tour in many parts of the city, you can see these curious trees devoid of leaves, I could not conclude if they were apple trees or some other specimen, but they are everywhere. It must be beautiful to see them blooming and giving joy to the city.

The walk along this street took us to a neighborhood where there are several art galleries and museums, with the itinerary a little tight we decided to enter only one of these, to be able to do different activities during the day.

Buscando un poco de cobijo en los nublados días que hacían, decidimos emprender nuestro camino por la calle schaumainkai que recorre la ribera del Meno, para llegar a la zona de los museos. Es un paseo que seguramente es mas bonito en verano, pero que me parece igual de agradable hacer puestos a elegir entre edificios y vistas al rio.

Durante el recorrido en muchas partes de la ciudad, se observan estas curiosos arboles desprovistos de hojas, no pude concluir si eran manzanos u algún otro especimen, pero están por todos lados. Tiene que ser precioso verlos florecer y darle alegría a la ciudad.

El paseo por esta calle nos llevó a un vecindario en donde hay varias galerías de artes y museos, con el itinerario un poco apretado que llevábamos decidimos entrar solo a uno de estos, para poder hacer actividades diferentes durante el día.

Städel Museum

We chose the Städel Museum which seemed to be the most complete and interesting we could find in the city. Despite not looking too big, we spent about two hours touring the different rooms of the building.

At first I was in rest mode, just observing and accepting that idea of being in front of some works that until now I had only seen in books. I am not a great connoisseur of art, but I know that there are things that I like to contemplate.

I remember being amazed at the paintings of Botticelli, Rembrandt, Munch and Monet that are on display, but it did not occur to me to photograph them, sometimes I feel it is disrespectful, but then when some image captures my attention significantly, just can't help it.

So I ended up taking some pictures to remember how much I enjoyed seeing for the first time works like Girl reading by Renoir, a painting of the Infanta Margarita by Velázquez and one of van Gogh's farms. I discovered with surprise the boat trip by a German artist unknown to me, Gerhard Richter and I found it a magnificent painting because of the way the fading effect was seen.

I was also pleasantly surprised to find interesting works in the contemporary art section, I really liked Fugue by Vasarely and with pleasure I found works by Venezuelan artists Soto and Cruz-Diez that made me feel nostalgic for the place where I grew up.

The entrance to the museum is 16,00 € during weekdays, with some surcharge on weekends and it seems to me that in two hours you can make a good tour.

Nos decantamos por el Städel Museumque parecía ser el más completo e interesante que podríamos encontrar en la ciudad. A pesar de no parecer demasiado grande, estuvimos unas dos horas recorriendo las diferentes salas del edificio.

Al principio estaba en modo descanso, simplemente observando y aceptando esa idea de estar frente a algunas obras que hasta ahora solo había visto en libros. No soy una gran conocedora del arte, pero sé que hay cosas que me gusta contemplar.

Recuerdo haberme sorprendido ante los cuadros de Botticelli, Rembrandt, Munch y Monet que tienen expuestos, pero no se me ocurrió fotografiarlos, a veces siento que es una falta de respeto, pero luego cuando alguna imagen capta mi atención significativamente, no logro evitarlo.

Así que terminé haciendo alguna foto para recordar lo mucho que me gustó ver por primera vez obras como La niña leyendo de Renoir, un cuadro de la infanta Margarita de Velázquez y una de las granjas de van Gogh. Descubrí con sorpresa el viaje en bote de un artista alemán desconocido para mí, Gerhard Richter y me pareció un cuadro magnifico porque la forma en que se veía el efecto opaco.

También me sorprendió gratamente encontrar obras interesante en la sección de arte contemporáneo, me gustó mucho Fugue de Vasarely y con placer me encontré con obras de los artistas venezolanos Soto y Cruz-Diez que me hicieron sentir nostalgia por el lugar donde crecí.

La entrada al museo es de 16,00 € durante los días de semana, con algún recargo en fin de semana y me parece que en dos horas se puede hacer un buen recorrido.

Palmengarten

Finally, after my insistence we made a winter visit to the Frankfurt botanical garden, maybe it is not the best time to go to this kind of places but I wanted to go and walk around this place.

It is true that there was not much color in the atmosphere and that several areas were closed, it also seemed completely desolate and we were one of the few who toured the place on a weekday. But I was happy with the visit to be able to walk for a while in the middle of nature.

The tour is lengthy, there are some air-conditioned glass rooms where you can see many types of flowers, it is a nice part and gives off a pleasant aroma. There are also others that house cactus and tropical plants, it was funny the change of temperature when we went in there because it was noticeably high.

The outdoor areas are marked with various plants and there is a lake from where you can see the old television antenna of the city in the distance. It was an interesting closing of the visit to the city, a quiet walk with plenty of time to chat and enjoy nature to analyze some aspects of life.

Finalmente, tras mi insistencia hicimos una visita invernal al jardín botánico de Frankfurt, quizá no es la mejor época para ir a este tipo de lugares pero yo quería ir y caminar por el lugar.

Es verdad que no había mucho color en el ambiente y que varias zonas estaban cerradas, también parecía completamente desolado y eramos de los pocos que recorríamos el lugar en un día de semana. Pero yo estaba contenta con la visita poder caminar un rato entre naturaleza.

El recorrido es largo, hay algunos salones de cristal climatizados en donde se pueden observar muchos tipos de flores, es una parte linda y que desprende un aroma agradable. También hay otros que acogen cactus y plantas tropicales, fue curioso el cambio de temperatura cuando entramos allí porque era notablemente alta.

Los espacios exteriores tienen señalizados diversas plantas y hay un lago desde donde se puede ver a lo lejos la antigua antena de televisión de la ciudad. Fue un cierre interesante de la visita a la ciudad, un paseo tranquilo con bastante tiempo para charlar y aprovechar la naturaleza para analizar algunos aspectos de la vida.

I'm gonna say goodbye with a picture that showed my enthusiasm to discover this city, I really wanted to come to Frankfurt and I feel that the short time I spent there only left me with the feeling of wanting to come back and discover a little more about what this city has to offer.

At some point I came across at the Dom/Römer subway station with some kind of statue of a monster, it was some kind of chimera but I have no idea why they were there and if it was some special symbol. I took a picture for the memory because I like those occasional monstrosity traces.

So together with this peculiar companion I say goodbye to this city, just for now, and I hope this tour can help someone who is considering visiting here.

Me voy a despedir con una imagen que mostraba mi entusiasmos por conocer esta ciudad, tenía muchas ganas de venir a Frankfurt y siento que el poco tiempo que estuve solo me dejó la sensación de querer volver y descubrir un poco más sobre lo que esta ciudad tiene para ofrecer.

En algún momento me encontré en la estación de metro de Dom/Römer con una especie de estatua de un mounstrico, era una especie de quimera pero no tengo idea de por qué estaban ahí y si era algún símbolo especial. Me hice una foto para el recuerdo porque me gustan esos rastros de monstruosidad ocasional.

Así que junto a este compañero tan peculiar me despido de esta ciudad, por el momento, y espero que este recorrido pueda ayudar a alguna persona que se esté planteando visitar la ciudad.
