Araure, The Monas: Heading Toward the Hidden Paradise of La Lucía [En-Es]

Traveling across Venezuela is something that deeply inspires me. In September, I had the chance to embark on the best adventure of my 2025. So far, I believe it has been the most challenging and enchanting experience. My brother and I left Barquisimeto at 10:00 a.m., Venezuelan time. To reach the hidden paradise in the sector of The Monas, Araure, in the state of Portuguesa, we first entered through The Miel, which connects to trunk road 4—the route that links Barquisimeto with Portuguesa.

To be honest, we took the wrong road due to our lack of knowledge. The place we were headed to had a 100% difficulty rating for access, with no roads, infrastructure, or electricity. Once we reached the highest part of the mountain, we asked some locals for directions. They told us that the correct way was through the sector of The Tanks. That meant we had to descend, continue along trunk road 4, and enter this small town before climbing back up the mountains of Portuguesa.

We quickly corrected our route. It took more time, but it was far better than the previous path, which had been horrible. The number of rocks on the road made it extremely difficult. After returning to trunk road 4, we reached the town known as The Tanks. There was a bridge with a dry riverbed underneath, though it was clear the river grew dramatically during the rainy season. The bridge was frightening—almost terrifying. What was strange was that another, even narrower bridge followed it.

Once in The Tanks, we took a short break, bought some snacks, and continued toward the Rincón del Senderista. The road was unpaved but well-defined. Still, without asphalt, riding a motorcycle on it was extremely tough.

As we began to ascend, the views became overwhelming. I was mesmerized by everything I saw. From the mountains, we had a perfect view of the Portuguesa valley. The green tones of the mountains were stunning. It felt like a dream; the energy of the place was powerful.

I took photos from a natural viewpoint. I remember two girls admiring the landscape's beauty. The sense of disconnection and awe blended perfectly. A paradise—an enchanting place with its own magic and spirit. Every photograph felt extraordinary.

At this point, we had been riding for three hours from Barquisimeto, and we still had more to go. I realized we were at a lookout because of a wooden sign. The bags hanging from it belonged to the girls who were admiring the view.

We made a quick stop and continued until we reached a Venezuelan churuata. I loved how effortlessly it blended with the space and nature. It felt spiritually connected to the surroundings.

As we advanced, the road became more complicated and difficult. Eventually, we arrived at a spot with signs that read: Bamboo, Barquilla Hill, and sector The Monas. We needed to head to The Monas, where the Camp Bamboo was located.

I had to get off the motorcycle and walk because the dirt road was steep and had a large puddle. There was mud everywhere, and I didn’t want to fall with my brother—especially in a place where no one could help us.

I got back on the motorcycle, and we continued riding until we reached a small settlement where we asked how much longer it would take. They told us twenty minutes, but it was definitely more. Luckily, a man told us he could guide us halfway. He was a farmer and lived near a clay house with horses—though not in that same house, but the one right before his.

This place caught my attention. It was dry, and a horse stood there like the ones in old Mexican films my grandfather used to watch. It was such a lovely and nostalgic scene. The road was extremely difficult, but everything around us was spectacular.

We were descending deeper into the mountains, and we could clearly see the ranges surrounding us. Each mountain radiated beauty and an incredible energy. The house sitting alone among the mountains belonged to the man who had offered to guide us.

Nature is stunning—I can’t deny it. Yet I wondered how people could live so isolated. I think this area is perfect for farms, vacation spaces, and agriculture. Still, I dare say these mountains hold something more. I noticed it in the color of the soil; by this point, we were on a clay road.

After leaving the previous mountain behind, I saw one that completely captivated me. A mountain like this is hard to find. It was covered in trees, but one side revealed exposed erosion. It was the only mountain with that feature—and it was beautiful.

This mountain could only be seen from a lower muddy area. I had to get off the motorcycle again. I took the opportunity to admire it; I felt a deep and magical connection. I captured several photos. One showed a wooden post with the mountains towering behind it. The picture looked silent yet exotic—a landscape worthy of global recognition, and I was the only one witnessing it at that moment.

Everywhere—here, there, and all around—the mountains expressed their immensity, reminding me of how small I was. We were still far from our destination, yet the landscape continued revealing its wonders. If what I saw before arriving was this breathtaking, then what awaited us had to be even more astonishing.

These mountains displayed a unique beauty that you can only appreciate by pausing for a moment. To observe them for what they are—for their shapes, their essence, and everything they contain. The trees blended together, and I felt so close that I could almost touch them.

Había lodo y no quería caerme junto a mi hermano.

Amazing journey your photos and descriptions truly capture the magic and energy of those mountains. What a stunning hidden paradise
It is an unforgettable paradise hidden away in Venezuela. Beautiful mountains and landscapes.
I think if someone is sad then they should go see the beauty of the mountains, then their mind will be better. If someone likes silence then they should go to the mountains. Mountains are truly a unique creation of nature. Best wishes to you.
The silence in this place was incredible, the magic and the birdsong fantastic. An indescribable journey. Beautiful and filled with something unforgettable. I will never forget it.
Let me tell you that this publication is devoid of nature and I love that. As you said every photo is spectacular, every angle, every view, that contrast of the green with the land, even on a cloudy day. And you did all that way on a motorbike? That's quite a journey and a great exploration. They took the wrong road that led them to see all this and you said that the road was difficult, I assimilate it to life, the difficult roads usually lead to beautiful things if one dares to travel them, it is not easy, as in this case, but the reward is great.
What a paradisiacal place, that pure energy of nature envelops everything, I love it. Thank you very much and a big hug Neruel!

It is one of the most challenging places I have ever explored. Yes, we traveled the entire way by motorcycle, although we later parked them to reach our destination. This is the first part of the story. I agree that difficult paths often lead to beautiful things in life, and this trip was the best example of that. You just have to dare to travel them. The reward is great after all.
The energy you feel here is impressive. You recharge your batteries and don't want to return to normality easily.
That's right, it's the reward that pays off and that applies to all walks of life, well said!
