Great Tit and Sparrows

Happy May Day!

The day of labour luckily is a holiday and I am enjoying my day off. Moreover this week is our Easter and there are more days off ahead. Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter on different date and it can vary a week or a month sometimes. Like this year, it is a month difference between the Catholic and Orthodox Easter. Why is that? Simple answer is the different calendars used, Julian by the Orthodox and Gregorian - by the Catholics.

With a week ahead, except tomorrow when I will be home office, one can think I would have time for new photo sessions. Alas, the weather is going to be against me, rain and rain again. Yesterday it was hammering down and even though today we have not a drop, it was very gloomy. Also, it was too muddy in the woods, so we decided to be just in the park and there were not much to be seen.

Still, I heard the Great Reed Warbler (thank you Merlin) in one bush and I hope it will stay there longer enough to see and photograph it. I have seen this warbler in the fields, but never so close to us. Merlin is my application I used to id the birds. It is extremely helpful with the sounds and can id the bird among all the traffic noise.

I was almost sure I would be empty handed, when I saw this Great Tit very close.

The bird did not pay attention who is clicking while finding food among the needles.

Head down most of the time and I have not a single shot to see the black line across the chest. I could tell by it if it is male or female. The thick line belongs to the male.

The bird lost balance and showed notable acrobatic abilities. Unlike its cousin, the Blue Tit who can hang upside down, the Great Tit struggled a bit and spread one of the wings to keep the balance.

Here is a sequence of shots.

The bird returned to its normal position and continued eating the small buds.

So, the Great Tit saved the day, I got photos to share. Not far, on another tree sparrows were munching the same.

This time my photos are not cropped and I did not edit them. Hope you like them.

Wishing you a lovely week and happy birding!
