Penataran Temple is a legacy of two great kingdoms in the archipelago, namely the Kediri Kingdom and the Majapahit Kingdom. This temple was built during the Kediri Kingdom, precisely during the reign of King Srengga (1190-1200). This temple was also used during the Majapahit Kingdom, as evidenced by information in the Negarakertagama Book.
Penataran Temple is located in Penataran Village, Ngleok District, Blitar Regency. This temple is one of the grandest and largest Hindu temple complexes in East Java. This temple is also believed to be a silent witness to the glory until the collapse of the two kingdoms.
The Penataran Temple building complex occupies a land area of ​​almost 13,000 square meters which is divided into three parts, namely the central, front and rear courtyards, which are separated by two walls. The unique and non-symmetrical arrangement of the buildings proves that the construction of this temple complex did not occur in one period.In the front yard there is a gate flanked by two Dwarapala statues as door guards dated to 1242 Saka or 1320 AD. In this yard there are several buildings, such as the Bale Agung, the terrace pavilion, and the Candra Sengkala Temple.Halaman belakang dianggap sebagai tempat paling sakral yang di dalamnya terdapat bangunan candi utama dan Prasasti Palah.
