Postcards from Thailand #34: Driving and Dinosaurs!

avatar
(Edited)

In a previous life, as I travelled the highways and byways of Britain, I regularly called into motorway service areas for food and a break from driving.

Now in Thailand, and still driving up and down between Samui and Bangkok, I also take regular breaks for rest...

But the service areas are mighty different!

Moto's over-priced, tasteless cold fayre and uninviting decor couldn't be further apart from the colour and mind blowing, cartoonish pomp of a Thai petrol station.

You cam buy a full meal here for a quid!

A nice little spot in front of the toilets for a nice little Instagram moment to make your friends 'wish they were here'!

Moto needs dinosaurs! They need Insta spots to take photos of your road trip. They need freshly cooked street food lining the forecourts and they need fairylights and fake LV on sale!

It's like Moto meets Blackpool on acid!

The other point is that these service areas are every 10 miles, and each one has its own individuality. I can tell where I stopped from the differing scents of soap in the toilets!

We definitely need brightly coloured, fibreglass kangaroos along the UK motorway network!

Nobody does things quite like Thailand!

This has been a @nathen007 Thai temple-free post!

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!

Lol, sounds much better over there! It is genuinely like our service stations/cafe's are stuck in the seventies or something!

I still get culture shock! I don't even turn the engine off to fill up so the Airton stays on and there are no self service pumps. You get one uniformed kid filling and another cleaning your windows. No solitary miserable bastard sat behind a screen taking your money!

Of course, when they're only earning 7 quid a day for a 6 day week, labour is cheap.

Its fucking funny though! Two weeks here would keep you in comedy material for 10 years!

I miss British cuisine. By that I mean pizza and curry.

Lol now I know you're lying! Nonsense respecting American would enjoy British versions of pizza.

In all honesty, you must have tried a carvery or Sunday lunch at some point, impressions?

By British cuisine I mean Italian and Indian, of course. = }

Whenever I'm asked about the food in England, I'm oh, it's the best if you like Italian and Indian.

I never really got into the biscuits thing. Dude, and even as I write this, I've never been much of a fan of tea, either. Then, while in England and seeing how it was such a notoriety I did some research and found out it's like the worst thing ever for your teeth. I was surprised too. Even black coffee is better for your teeth than tea.

Americans, you know how we are about grills. :bling:

As though my accent wasn't already a dead giveaway.

Whaddup Nathen. = }

Hahaha imagine such places in the UK 🤓 would be cool though 😎
It spices up the long driving.
Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend 👋🏻

You are welcome @nathen007 👋🏻😊 thank you so much.
Let’s say… as much as I can without a car 🚗 hehehe that one is with hubby in the UK. And being remote… rural. Not much options to go out and about.
Bit I will catch up driving around mid July when hubby moves to Ireland.
