[ENG-ESP] Among the Galician Cliffs | My Entry to Around The World Challenge #27/6

Hello Hivers! 💙 Today I want to share with you some photos I took in this beautiful place on the Galician coast.

That day, we first went to Frouxeira Beach (or Valdoviño Beach), where they have some very nice cabin-style restaurants and bars that contribute to a very relaxed atmosphere. People usually go there to watch the sunset, but we went on a slightly overcast morning.

¡Hola Hivers! 💙 Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes algunas fotos que tomé en este lugar hermoso de las cosas de Galicia.

Ese día fuimos primero a la Playa de Frouxeira o de Valdoviño, donde tienen unos restaurantes y bares estilo cabaña muy bonitos que contribuyen a que haya un ambiente muy relajado. La gente suele ir allí a ver el atardecer, pero nosotros fuimos en una mañana un poco nublada.

This beach is famous for its waves, which are ideal for surfers. Afterward, we drove a bit further up to go to the Lighthouse. Funnily enough, I didn't take any photos of the Lighthouse itself, which has very modern architecture and is extremely tall. I was too captivated by the views and the wind, and at several points, I stopped pulling out my phone just to breathe and observe.

Esta playa es famosa por sus olas ideales para los surferos. Después rodamos un poco más hacia arriba para ir al Faro, curiosamente no le tomé fotos al Faro, que tiene una arquitectura muy moderna y es altísimo. Yo estaba demasiado embelesada con las vistas y el viento, y en varios momentos dejé de sacar el móvil para simplemente respirar y observar.

I was also paying close attention to what our friend, who lives in the area, was telling us. He told us about the time the sea rose all the way up to the lighthouse—which is 75 meters (246 ft) high! That was a few years ago, in 2012, and a family that was walking in the area died, including a small child. So I stood there in silence, contemplating the small cross with toys and flowers that the locals have placed to remember them. The landscape is truly beautiful, enveloping, and imposing; it's as if nature is showing us just how powerful it is, and even so, it's hard to imagine the water reaching that high. As I listened to my companions talk, I just stared at the sea with respect. If you ever visit this beautiful place to admire the cliffs and blue waters, pay close attention to the weather forecast. If it's too windy or rainy, it's best to stay away. Nevertheless, there are always visitors, tourists, and surfers walking between the beach and the lighthouse viewpoint almost all year round, though it remains a quiet, not-too-crowded place.

Además, yo estaba poniendo atención a lo que nos contaba nuestro amigo, que vive en la zona y nos hablaba de la vez que el mar subió hasta el faro, ¡que mide 75 m de altura! Eso fue hace algunos años, en el 2012 y murió una familia que paseaba por la zona, entre ellos un niño pequeño, así que me quedé en silencio también contemplando la pequeña crucecita con juguetes y flores que los lugareños han puesto para recordarlo. Realmente el paraje es hermoso, envolvente e imponente, parece que es la naturaleza demostrándonos lo poderosa que es, y aún así es difícil imaginar el agua llegando hasta allí arriba. Mientras escuchaba a mis compañeros hablar yo me quedé mirando con respeto al mar. Si alguna vez visitan este hermoso lugar para admirar los riscos y las aguas azules estén atentos a cómo va a estar el clima. Si hay demasiado viento o lluvia es mejor mantenerse alejados. Sin embargo, siempre hay visitantes, turistas y surfistas que pasean entre la playa y el mirador del faro durante casi todo el año, sin dejar de ser un lugar tranquilo, no demasiado concurrido.

Below the Lighthouse are these spectacular viewpoints, formed from the structural remains of military batteries that were once there. This circle on the ground looks like it was made for gazing out at the open sea, but it wasn't just used for that. It was built with that shape and in that exact spot to serve as a base for one of the large, rotating searchlights used to spot, and signal to the cannons, the location of enemy ships.

Debajo del Faro, están estos miradores tan espectaculares, formados por las estructuras de los restos de baterías militares que habían allí. Este círculo en el suelo parece haber sido hecho para mirar hacia el mar abierto en realidad no se usaba solo para eso, fue construido con esa forma y en ese punto exacto con el propósito de que sirviera de base a uno de los grandes proyectores de luz giratorios que se usaban para avistar, y señalar a los cañones la ubicación de los barcos enemigos.

(Today I'm participating in the Around The World Challenge by @bucipuci, with this photo, 👆 which I took on my first trip to Galicia.)

We also walked through the battery tunnels, where you can see the small compartments that served as kitchens, bathrooms, and rooms for the soldiers. The truth is, it's impressive that these structures are still there so many years later, living embedded in the rocks.

También caminamos por los túneles de las baterías, donde se pueden ver los pequeños compartimentos que hacían las veces de cocina, baños y habitaciones para los militares. La verdad es que es impresionante que esas estructuras sigan allí tantos años después, viviendo incrustadas entre las rocas.

Looking a bit to our left, to the southwest, you can see the small Ermita de Virge do Porto (Chapel of the Virgin of the Port), built on a rocky crag that can only be reached on foot at low tide. Its small, white figure stands out against the waves and the rocks. It reminds me of those little clay houses and churches that grandmothers often have as decorations in their homes.

Mirando un poco hacia nuestra izquierda, al suroeste, se puede ver la pequeña Ermita de Virge do Porto (Ermita de la Virgen del Puerto), construida sobre un peñón rocoso al que solo se puede acceder a pie cuando la marea está baja. Su pequeña figura destaca con su blancura junto a las olas y las rocas. Me recuerda a esas figuras de casitas e iglesias de barro que suelen tener las abuelas de decoración en sus hogares.
