En busca de Cecilia

Hey, how are you?

Shall we go for a walk then? I wasn't sure if I was going to visit Cecilia today, but I think I will because the sun is finally out and it's a good occasion to introduce her to you.

I believed in my stubborn and unimaginative mind that for a walk we had Saturday or Sunday, but I see that here in Hive Wednesdays are also designed for this and to forget about work.

Sounds perfect to me.

A word of warning (I have been living in Havana for years - believe me, many years - and I still get lost) We need a map.

Well, this is where we will start the tour.

¡Hey, ¿qué tal?!

¿Vamos a pasear entonces? No estaba segura si ir hoy a visitar a Cecilia, pero creo que sí que lo haré porque ya por fin salió el sol y es una buena ocasión para presentártela.

Pensaba en mi mente recia y poco imaginativa que para pasear teníamos el sábado o el domingo, pero ya veo que aquí en Hive los miércoles también están diseñados para esto y para olvidarse del trabajo.

Me parece perfecto.

Una advertencia (llevo años -créeme que muchos- viviendo en La Habana y todavía me pierdo) Necesitamos un mapa.

Pues aquí comenzaremos el recorrido.

While we analyze which route to take, do you feel like an outdoor coffee? This is the Café del Oriente Restaurant.

En lo que analizamos qué ruta tomar, ¿te apetece un café al aire libre? Este es el Restaurante Café del Oriente.

We shouldn't have asked the taxi to drop us off so far away, but we don't really have anything else to do now but walk and meet Cecilia. That little table is free and from there we have that view where we can snoop a bit on those two talkers, before the waitress comes (it's not Bloody Marys time). Ya, ya... seriously. That sculpture you see there is called: The Talk.

No debimos pedirle al taxi que nos dejara tan lejos, pero en realidad no hay nada más qué hacer ahora que caminar y conocer a Cecilia. Aquella mesita está libre y desde ahí tenemos esa vista en la que podemos fisgonear un poco a esos dos habladores antes que venga la camarera (no es hora de Bloody Marys). Ya, ya... serio. Esa escultura que ves ahí se titula: La Conversación.

However, we're not going to talk much here because I want to explain who Cecilia is when we get there. For now, I'll give you a clue... she's the protagonist of a novel.

The coffee takes a long time and we linger, looking to the right. See how they have fun playing with the pigeons, or is it the other way around?

Sin embargo, no vamos a conversar mucho aquí porque quiero explicarte bien quién es Cecilia pero cuando lleguemos al lugar. Por lo pronto te voy a dar un dato... es la protagonista de una novela.

El café se demora y nos entretenemos mirando hacia la derecha. Mira como se divierten ellos jugando con las palomas, ¿o será al revés?

That fountain, the one with the lions, sometimes does what fountains do, pour water. I like the sound of that particular water very much, not that it is special, perhaps it is an echo that can be felt throughout the square.

By the way, one day I went up to the roof of the church. I often come to feed the pigeons. I bring them corn. That day it occurred to me that in addition to feeding them I had to do something different and I asked to be allowed to go up on the roof. I think I used a bit of my influence and my press credentials for that.

Upstairs, in the room before you go out on the roof, they have a huge, very old organ. But we don't have much time for that now, remember we're expected and there's a lot of walking to do.

Aquella fuente, la de los leones, a veces hace lo que hacen las fuentes, echar agua. El sonido de esa agua en particular me gusta mucho, no es que sea especial, quizás se trata de un eco que se siente en toda la Plaza.

Por cierto, un día subí al tejado de la iglesia. Muchas veces vengo a alimentar a las palomas. Les traigo maíz. Ese día se me ocurrió que además de darles de comer tenía que hacer algo distinto y pedí que me dejaran subir a la azotea. Creo que usé un poco mi influencia y mi credencial de prensa para eso.

En la planta alta, en la habitación que está antes de salir al tejado, tienen un órgano inmenso y muy viejo. Pero ahora no tenemos mucho tiempo para eso, recuerda que nos esperan y hay que caminar bastante.

Mira, llegó el café.

... 20 or 25 minutes pass before we start walking again.

We move on crossing some streets and I take the opportunity to take some pictures of what I am seeing. Havana is very photogenic. You can see for yourself in these images.

Avanzamos cruzando algunas calles y yo aprovecho para hacer algunas capturas de lo que voy viendo. La Habana es muy fotogénica. Puedes constatarlo en estas imágenes.

A look inside a housing conglomerate known as Solar, but quickly and without stopping too long because we don't want to be bothering people so much.

Una mirada hacia el interior de un solar, pero rápido y sin detenernos mucho pues no hay que estar importunando tanto a las personas.

These buildings are so old that many of them are propped up. This is my least favourite part of Old Havana, because the people who live here are in real danger.

Estas construcciones son tan añejas que muchas se encuentran apuntaladas. Realmente esta es la parte que menos me gusta de La Habana Vieja, pues las personas que viven aquí corren verdadero peligro.

I have always loved this alley for the view it offers and we are already close to our destination. The dome we see is that of the Museum of the Revolution and we seem to be about 2 or 3 minutes away from meeting Cecilia, maybe less. Remember that I get lost even with a map in my hand.

Siempre me ha gustado mucho este callejón por la vista que ofrece y ya estamos cerca de nuestro destino. La cúpula que vemos es la del Museo de la Revolución y al parecer ya nos faltan unos 2 o 3 minutos para conocer a Cecilia, quizás menos. Recuerda que me pierdo hasta con un mapa en la mano.

Finally, we arrive at the church of La Loma del Ángel and the beautiful mulatto girl awaits us with her usual smarminess.

She is, as I said, the protagonist of the novel Cecilia Valdés or La Loma del Ángel, by the writer Cirilo Villaverde.

Por fin, llegamos a la Iglesia de La Loma del Ángel y la bella mulata nos espera con su habitual zalamería.

Ella es, como te decía, la protagonista de la Novela Cecilia Valdés o La Loma del Ángel, del escritor Cirilo Villaverde.

The bronze inscription reads as follows:

"More than an unhappy love story, the novel Cecilia Valdés, or La Loma del Ángel, Cirilo Villaverde's masterpiece, is an X-ray of a country and an era: 19th century Cuba, marked by the colonial despotism of a slave regime.
On the bicentenary of the birth of the famous Cuban writer, the Office of the Historian of the City has placed here this sculpture of the beautiful and legendary Havana mulatto, who has become part of the island's imaginary forever".

En esa inscripción de bronce se puede leer lo que sigue:

"Más que una desdichada historia de amor, la novela Cecilia Valdés, o La Loma del Ángel, obra cumbre de Cirilo Villaverde, constituye una radiografía de un país y una época: la Cuba del siglo XIX, marcada por el despotismo colonial de un régimen esclavista.
Al cumplirse el bicentenario del nacimiento del insigne escritor cubano, la Oficina del Historiador de La Ciudad emplaza aquí esta escultura de la bella y legendaria mulata habanera, que se instaló para siempre en el imaginario insular."

Of course, there is a monument to the novelist and patriot and an inscription informing the visitor that the famous writer was also imprisoned and banished for defending his ideas.

Por supuesto no podía faltar un monumento al novelista y patriota además de una inscripción que informa al visitante que el célebre escritor también sufrió prisión y destierro por defender sus ideas.

If you are thirsty, here we can drink water, a smoothie or maybe eat a snack, chocolate croissants... they are really good; meanwhile I tell you a bit about Cecilia and that novel you might like to read.

We could return in this car. But I'll take the opportunity, for the moment, to capture a reflection.

The novel is written with an unusual rawness, realism and also sentimentality, and connoisseurs say that it is still influenced by the prolific British writer of Romanticism, Walter Scott.

It tells the story of the love affair between the uniquely beautiful mestiza Cecilia Valdés and a rich young white man, Leonardo Gamboa, who in the end turn out to be brothers, and portrays the intricacies of the first decades of the 19th century, through murky and somewhat mysterious situations in the different social classes of the time.

Cecilia Valdés' imprint was also felt on the island's musical scene, as the famous Cuban musician Gonzalo Roig composed a zarzuela of the same name, inspired by the work of Cirilo Villaverde.

La novela está escrita con una inusual crudeza, realismo y también sentimentalismo, y dicen los entendidos que aún así se nota en ella la influencia que ejerció en su autor el prolífico escritor británico del Romanticismo, Walter Scott.

Narra el idilio de amor entre la mestiza de singular belleza, Cecilia Valdés, y un joven blanco y rico, Leonardo Gamboa, que al final resultan ser hermanos, y retrata los intríngulis de las primeras décadas del siglo XIX, a través de situaciones turbias y un poco misteriosas, en el seno de las diferentes clases sociales de entonces.

Hasta el panorama musical de la isla llegó la impronta de Cecilia Valdés, pues inspirado en la obra de Cirilo Villaverde, el célebre músico cubano Gonzalo Roig compuso una zarzuela que lleva el mismo nombre.
