A winter breeze in Cuba / Day One

Brrrrrrrrr… How cold it is! We are definitely not used to the cold, and although many people are enjoying it now (myself among them), I also feel great concern for the elderly and any living being in vulnerable conditions. That was what I was thinking as I watched people moving from one place to another, and since it is Sunday and there is little traffic compared with weekdays, the street feels even colder. But how to capture this with my lens, beyond the obviousness of certain garments in a country so well known for its eternal summer?

This moment will be fleeting, possibly unique in 2026. Right now we have 15 °C, but the wind chill makes it feel like 9 degrees. The damp air and the gusts intensify the sensation of cold.

The little chill with which December bade farewell was hardly anything. Today, however, I was forced to take down from the top compartment of my wardrobe the coats which, by the way, were packed and clean in one suitcase, inside another suitcase that is, in fact, covered in dust. So one or two more tasks are added to my long to‑do list: washing the suitcase and dusting the place where the coats were stored.

It is said that this is the eighth cold front of the winter season… for me it is the first, because it is the one that made me take out my coats.

Now I look at these photos and, despite some expressions on the faces, and the body language I managed to capture, I feel something is missing…

I had to return home, but there will be another session later today or early tomorrow, I am sure of it, and perhaps it will be even colder. I also have one or two coats I can donate before nightfall.

It's a very, very long time to see the people warmly dressed there! The first photo is from a horror scene!!! I also thought of the most vulnerable people and the elderly who don't have the means to heat their houses... here now 13 degrees, it doesn't feel cold... but it is. I have a wool coat on hahaha take care of yourself!

Sadly, in this world there are many people going hungry and cold… just thinking about it breaks my heart. Avecilla, I’m keeping myself well wrapped up, don’t worry. Thank you. Take care of yourself too.

Well, here at home there’s a microclimate, in this area, I mean. On hot days, the night here feels cool. So with two duvets over me, socks, two coats and a pair of pyjama trousers, I’m still frozen hahaha… Make sure you all keep warm!

I have no doubt that it's cold; in the photos I see people wearing warm clothes, and there's also no doubt that there's a lot of warmth in your heart.

A big, warm hug from here. 🤗

What good fortune it is to have warmth, food and friends who send messages full of affection. I feel happy because of that. Thank you!

It's terribly cold, my friend, colder than we're used to, I think. You've captured it perfectly in the photos, I love them!!!

Some really nice shots you've taken!
15 Degrees: WOW. Minus a little in my country 🙂
Question: Why the mouth and nose covers?

Thank you Edje. We’re not used to those temperatures here. I imagine it’s to protect the throat and airways from that wind that feels like it cuts right through you… I felt the same, but I was on my bike...
