A grey walk?

(Edited)

Have you ever tried accompanying a cup of coffee with bits of cheese? It's delicious, although I must confess that the first time I saw this combination in front of me it seemed strange. It was during one of those work trips, in a square in Bayamo, in the east of the country.

Apparently it was a custom of the Mambises (Cuban fighters against Spanish colonialism) to taste coffee in this way. And another characteristic is that this coffee is sweetened with honey.

But my post is not about coffee, it's about a walk, and what prompts me to tell you this is that as I write, I have a cup prepared in the Bayamese style next to me.

Now let's get started.

It turns out that at the end of last year I was looking for an App to record my Biking progress and discovered Relive. I soon also discovered that I could record many other outdoor activities and even participate in challenges. I created one myself and was surprised to see so many people join in.

WhatsApp Image 2024-01-17 at 6.37.17 PM.jpeg WhatsApp Image 2024-01-17 at 6.37.16 PM.jpeg

When I woke up today a notification reminded me that I had to do an activity to finish the challenge. I have to tell you that sometimes I have forgotten to do this check-in; however, thinking beyond that, it's not that the forgetfulness has been so significant. The conclusion is that in this aspect I need to improve, that is to say, more outings, more emotion for this body and soul.

So I decided to go for a little walk and, as I always do, let myself be surprised by the unexpected.

A lot of things happened.

Grey Wednesday, pleasant temperature... people are already taking out their coats, as if it were cold. Well, I put one on too, a simple one.

My neighbourhood is not a beauty. I'd like to see these streets fixed one day and the rubbish collected as it should be; these are unresolved things that unnerve me a bit and often one of my recurring thoughts is: how I'd like to live in a clean place, where people take care of their environment!

So I invite you to see what my eyes saw and the stories behind it.

IMG_20240117_143654.JPG

At one time in my youth I used to walk with my eyes drilling into the ground. My body was like the stem of a wilted flower, and I was always told, walk upright, look at the baggage on your back. And it was true... but one day I don't know, maybe something changed in me and I started to set my eyes on what was in front of me and often on what was higher up. Then my posture changed.

IMG_20240117_143826.JPG

That's a woodpecker you see up there, I was regretting not having my camera with me. The bird sounded like a dolphin... then I thought that the mockingbird, which is the great imitator of our fields, is imitating this boy.

IMG_20240117_144000.JPG

I met many smiles along the way. Acquaintances in motorbikes greeted me warmly and I smiled at them too.

IMG_20240117_144047.JPG

This motivated me. Enclosures often put wrong ideas in people's minds. They even create a bad state of mind and it turns out that the beauty is out there, you just have to know how to look.

IMG_20240117_144118.JPG

I also met a vendor selling Pan con Lechón (bread with suckling pig) to whom I somehow caught his attention, it seems, because whenever he sees me he always asks me if he can invite me to something... Some Cubans are very daring. Can I buy you a malt, a soft drink, a beer, whatever you want? -he said. And he walked away from his point of sale, showing me, as if by mistake, all the wads of cash he had in one of those pouches they call a kangaroo, but in feminine (cangura).

I just answered him: don't leave your workplace alone. He replied that he had finished and continued to insist until I told him flatly no.

IMG_20240117_145034.JPG

So I stopped here in front of this bus with the Artemisa football team on it. Two men got off and I talked to them, to see if the other one would go away - my goodness, what a nuisance.

It turned out that they were going to Cienfuegos for a competition. I wished them luck and told them that my family is from Artemisa, and so am I, in a way.

Later I took some pictures of certain scenes in which my thoughts wandered. Such opposing ideas, from destruction to life and beauty.

IMG_20240117_145332.JPG IMG_20240117_145425.JPG

Until suddenly this truck full of bananas appeared, and I felt happy because I imagine that it will be taken somewhere, where people will be able to buy them. Hopefully not at such high prices.

IMG_20240117_145439.JPG

I wasn't so lucky with the prices, but I needed to buy some food anyway. So there you see the guy in the orange shorts, he is a seller I know and he lets me pay him by bank transfer, unlike others he doesn't demand cash. Good for me, as I am always short of cash. I can't stand queuing at ATMs.

IMG_20240117_145850.JPG

So this was my purchase. Not bad, 3.16 USD for some tomatoes, tomato sauce and bananas.

IMG_20240117_152045.JPG IMG_20240117_152057.JPG

The walk was going well, but I was more than half way to return home and the two bags were a bit heavy. My hands are - shall we say - sore from some cat events, which we'd better not mention here. So nothing... there was no choice but to keep walking. 😅

Do you recognise this neighbour? If you follow my posts a while ago, quite a while, I dedicated a post to him. And maybe you recognise these animals too, they were the ones in the scene of my bird watching.

IMG_20240117_150317.JPG

He told me that this month's rice is not coming to the winery (bodega). Hahaha... that there's no way to bring it, that the logistics... blah, blah, blah... and I followed his lead but a little further on, surprise!

IMG_20240117_150426.JPG

Do you see it? Well, I can show it better since I was able to talk to him.

IMG_20240117_150457.JPG

I regretted again... (finish my sentence)

🤣

Well, that was the most significant thing I think about my walk.... I don't know what you think.

Oh, I forgot, if you are looking for a house in Havana and don't mind building a little, this one you see here, a few steps from my house, is more than half built and for sale.

IMG_20240117_150828.JPG

It is also close to my can-collecting neighbour. I went back to his property to inspect it and found new evidence.

IMG_20240117_150951.JPG

IMG_20240117_151137.JPG IMG_20240117_151201.JPG IMG_20240117_151232.JPG

He is fed, at least, this is good.

Bueno, eso es 870 CUP y el salario mínimo de 2.100 🤔 Pero sí, hay que ver la vida con un mejor cristal.

Hi @nanixxx, I shouldn't be awake but I am. At first I thought I would embark on a big hike and said to myself: if I walk enough with nanixxx I'm sure that with fatigue I'll get sleepy and fall asleep. It didn't happen, but I loved meeting your neighbor, I'm thinking about the cas. A hug

Saludos.

I was able to talk to him.

And what did he say? 😂

He greeted me, told me not to pay any attention to that crazy old man with the cows and not to worry about the pain in my hand, as I was not far from home.
He also said that the next time I went out with the camera to the birdwatchers, I should visit him, as he lives there.

🤣

He was very talkative :D

Now, you know. A bit of food he likes (the other peacock already told you what they like or dislike) and camera! 📸

I wouldn't mind fixing up that house!

Not so sure about the cheese with coffee though 😀

I wouldn't mind fixing up that house!

You would be my neighbour and then you would probably even set up a brewery here, as we have a lot of mango.

About the coffee... Just try it and let me know. You can see that a Greek here has tried it, look at the comments. It's fotostef. 😉

I like how you tell stories throughout your trip. Also, the pictures that you share also have their own stories in them.
I saw that some old cars had bright colors. Also, a truck that carries a lot of bananas.

Well, tomatoes in my city are now $ 2 for a kilogram. So expensive than before. I Dunno if I can plant them in the future.

Hello ;)

Well, I'm always telling stories, and every moment and every photo, as you say, has a lot behind it. Sometimes we let things happen and we don't give them importance, but in reality, what I wanted to transmit here is a bit of our daily life. And how there is beauty even behind things that don't make us completely happy.

Certainly this is expensive here, as wages are very low. Imagine that a pensioner earns 1600 CUP, and the average salary is around 2300 CUP and that cost 870 CUP because the exchange rate is 1 USD X 280 CUP or so. And that's just a few tomatoes and some bananas... he will hardly be able to eat anything else for the month.

I think you should plant. You would save a lot of money. 😜

Great great tour!!! The day was grey but you saw a lot of things, pity the bags were so heavy, but you were happy to see that wonderful bird! I love it!❤️

Ja, it was good, yes, the important thing is to go for a walk and get some fresh air. Life unwinds if at some point it gets stuck. You do well with your walks in the same way.

Coffee accompanied with some cheese and a bit of easter bread is a must in Greece too! When I was drinking coffee it was a favourite combination!

Out of curiosity do you know what price this half built house has or could have?

I told you that Cubans and Greeks have a lot in common. And I have this feeling I have for living in Greece because in another life I was from there.

(about the half built house) I have no idea what the price is exactly, but it should not be more than US$15,000.

Since you insist we just have to figure out a way to bring you down here :)

Thank you for the price estimation. I am not ready to enter the real estate business in Cuba but I was curious!

😂 Hahaha... a comfortable little house like that in Havana can be rented and you get the investment out of it quickly. There are other places more interesting and nicer than my neighbourhood. Although this is relative, because the environment can be created.
And if you combine this with ecotourism and other things like thematic excursions all over Cuba. You get the investment even faster.

How much does a house cost where you live?

How much does a house cost where you live?

I would say roughly about ten times of what you told me. With that prices, I guess that real estate in Cuba is (or will be) a playground for American funds. As for which neighbourhood is interesting and which not, this is something that can change very quickly!

As if I were reading about someone's day here in Montalbán!... The parallels between you and us never cease to amaze me... I don't think it's just about the socio-political issue, I think there is something much more there, there is a kind of complex and charming synchronicity between Cuba and Venezuela, I suppose it has to do with the origins of both peoples, the mix of cultures and races, the geographical location and Duios knows what else... By the way, the The first lines of your post reminded me that our people in the mountains often have breakfast with coffee sweetened with molasses, wood-roasted cheese and fried yucca... I myself have had breakfast like this sometimes when I was young and woke up in the mountains camping! in the yards of the peasants!... A delight!... Thank you for the charming post, happy day and blessings!

Friend, that's true. Yes, we are very similar. The same thing happens to me when I read your posts. Here in Hive we connect in so many ways, and a Greek hiver has told me that he likes this combination.
Interesting.
It is always a pleasure to read you. It has been really nice to wake up and find all these comments, indeed.
The sun came out today. I remembered General Resóplez when he is in the summer campaign and it rains, it pours, the sun comes out, it hides and he says: ¡Qué paíszzz! 😅 (I mentioned this out in the post of the cartoons of Elpidio Valdés).
A big hug 😋🤗

It was also my attitude that I used to walk with my eyes focusing on the ground. I used to remain careful not to be knocked out by any kind of rock on the ground. And, my attitude is also changed I look up.May be it's symbol that my eyes are becoming greedy to see more and want more from this materialistic world.

Moreover, it's also my dream to clean the streets, grounds and to make the ways cleaner one. I want to see the roads fully developed but I don't know when these things will happen. Long way to go may be, but I think those days are knocking on the door.

No, I don't think it's that you want more of this materialistic world. It's that maybe you have realised that even when there are thousands of problems around us, the sun still rises for everyone, and that one is not sunk in the mud.
And about these desires, it is always good to start with yourself. When those around you notice the difference, they will too.

;)

I can't see any woodpecker :| But my eyes are really bad, so...

Eh... part of why I just stay in some days. Nuisances. Everywhere!

Well... that house could be beautiful! And the fruit you bought is far less expensive than we'd get them here!

It looks rather beautiful, Havana...

If I had more money in my pocketses I'd already be headed your way :D
