The quiet beach at Güirintal 🏝️🏖️🐠

The quiet beach at Güirintal

This weekend, since the sun was shining brightly and it was warm, we decided to go for a swim at the beach and chose to go to Güirintal Beach, which is just a few minutes away from Cumaná, the city where I live.

We decided to stop by the supermarket first and pick up a few things for a barbecue, since the food stands were closed the last time we went. With our shopping done, we got in the car, happy and excited to spend a different kind of day by the sea.

Güirintal Beach is about 25 minutes from Cumaná and 10 minutes from the Peñón toll booth. If you don’t have your own car, you can take a bus from the Cumaná bus terminal. All buses heading to Carúpano, San Antonio, or Marigüitar pass through Güirintal, so you can’t miss it.

Before you reach the pineapple stand—which is famous for selling the most delicious and sweetest pineapples in Sucre—there’s a junction that leads down to the beach. The entrance is lined with palm trees, and there are houses on both sides of the road. It’s usually a quiet beach, though on the day we went there were a few families there, with the same plan as us.

Güirintal Beach is quiet, with no strong waves, warm water, and shallow depths, allowing children to play safely. Perhaps that is why it is a family-friendly beach, where the plan isn’t to engage in water sports or marine activities, but rather to spend a relaxing day away from the hustle and bustle of crowds.

The truth is, this beach isn't very well-known because it lacks amenities like umbrellas, food, showers, and restrooms; yet it's every bit as good as the other beaches in the area, with crystal-clear, clean waters where the sky is reflected and the colors shift as evening approaches.

If you're the type who likes to eat by the sea, you can bring your own snacks or do what we did: we brought a small grill, since, unfortunately, there was no food service on the beach that day either.

As the afternoon wears on, the waves begin to pick up and people start gathering their things. Although the waves aren’t strong and there’s nothing to fear, people prefer to leave the water and stay on the shore chatting. Then the water grows murky, gets colder, and the smell of fish fills the air. We stayed a little longer, talking and eating, letting the waves splash us, then we gathered everything up and left.

The trip back was smooth and uneventful; we were full of energy and could still feel the waves in our bodies. That rocking sensation helped us fall asleep faster that night. As I always say: if you go to a beach with strong waves, you’re sure to feel like you’ve been thrown into a blender; but if you go to a quiet, serene beach with few people, peace seeps into your soul. That’s what I call: sea therapy.
