Today, I am taking you to visit "El Guapo," one of the most popular yet underserved neighborhoods in Cumaná, the capital of Sucre state. It is a coastal community bordering the sea—a feature that can be seen as a privilege, but also as a disadvantage or a problem for many.

Hoy los llevo a visitar "El Guapo", uno de los barrios más populares, aunque también más desatendidos, de Cumaná, la capital del estado Sucre. Es una comunidad costera situada a orillas del mar; una característica que puede considerarse un privilegio, pero también una desventaja o un problema para muchos.

Like most neighborhoods in Cumaná, this community consists of two-family homes packed closely together, painted in bright, loud colors, and lacking any urban planning or orderly layout. Its long, narrow, dusty streets—and the sidewalks alongside them—serve as gathering spots where people meet to chat or simply watch the day go by.

Al igual que la mayoría de los barrios de Cumaná, esta comunidad está formada por viviendas adosadas, muy próximas entre sí, pintadas con colores vivos y llamativos, y carentes de cualquier planificación urbana o trazado ordenado. Sus calles —largas, estrechas y polvorientas— y las aceras que las bordean sirven como puntos de encuentro donde la gente se reúne para conversar o simplemente ver pasar el día.

As a coastal neighborhood, the area features many wooden racks and makeshift structures used for hanging salted fish to dry, spreading out nets, or simply mooring boats at the water's edge. The area is also known for the sale of fresh fish caught by the residents themselves.

Por su carácter costero, la zona cuenta con numerosos soportes de madera y estructuras improvisadas que se utilizan para colgar pescado en salazón para su secado, extender redes o simplemente amarrar las embarcaciones a la orilla del agua. El lugar también es conocido por la venta de pescado fresco capturado por los propios residentes.

Yet one of the attractions of this community is precisely its proximity to the sea. Literally, the waves wash against the back of the houses, their walls, and their fences. It is common to be inside the homes and hear the roar of the waves, or to smell the distinctive scent of salt, the sea, and fish. However, during heavy swells and storms, the houses are flooded by the sea—a force that knows no borders or limits.

No obstante, durante los fuertes oleajes y las tormentas, las casas se inundan con el agua del mar: una fuerza que no conoce fronteras ni límites.

As you walk along, you can see boats not only behind every house—serving as the tools of the trade for local residents who make their living from artisanal fishing—but also parked on the sidewalks, awaiting repairs or the perfect weather conditions to head out to sea.

A medida que avanzas, puedes ver barcos no solo detrás de cada casa —sirviendo como herramientas de trabajo para los residentes locales que se ganan la vida con la pesca artesanal—, sino también aparcados en las aceras, a la espera de reparaciones o de las condiciones meteorológicas ideales para salir a la mar.

In this area, it is common to see the sky and sea filled with pelicans and frigatebirds—either following the multicolored boats arriving at the dock laden with fish, or soaring over the water and houses all day long in anticipation of a meal. Late in the afternoon, the clamor of birds fills the air as they squabble over fish entrails discarded while the catch is being prepared for sale or personal consumption. Motionless and alert, the birds look like sentinels or statues.

En esta zona, es habitual ver el cielo y el mar repletos de pelícanos y fragatas, ya sea siguiendo a las coloridas embarcaciones que llegan al muelle cargadas de pescado, o sobrevolando durante todo el día sobre el agua y las casas a la espera de comida. Al caer la tarde, el bullicio de las aves inunda el aire mientras disputan las vísceras de pescado desechadas durante la preparación de la captura, para su venta o consumo personal. Inmóviles y alertas, las aves parecen centinelas o estatuas.

Countless seabirds—such as pelicans, boobies, and gulls—rest on the boats or rock formations, keeping a watchful eye out for prey, while also using these spots as strategic locations to dry off in the sun. It is worth noting that the relentless sun and the scarcity of trees in the area create the sensation that the sun is beating down directly upon us.

Innumerables aves marinas —como pelícanos, alcatraces y gaviotas— descansan sobre las embarcaciones o las formaciones rocosas, vigilando atentamente en busca de presas y aprovechando estos lugares estratégicos para secarse al sol. Cabe destacar que el sol implacable y la escasez de árboles en la zona generan la sensación de que el sol cae directamente sobre nosotros.

Unfortunately, while we were there, we saw a lot of plastic waste—not only on the shore but also in the water. As it is a seaside community, much of the waste and trash is thrown into the ocean, or the rising tide sweeps up all the refuse from the streets and homes.

Lamentablemente, durante nuestra estancia vimos una gran cantidad de residuos plásticos, no solo en la orilla sino también en el agua. Al tratarse de una comunidad costera, gran parte de los desechos y la basura se arroja al océano, o bien la marea creciente arrastra los desperdicios de las calles y los hogares.

However, none of this detracts from the merit of this community, which lives off daily fishing and offers a view of the most beautiful sunsets in Cumaná.

Sin embargo, nada de esto le resta mérito a esta comunidad, que vive de la pesca diaria y ofrece una vista de los más hermosos atardeceres de Cumaná.

In areas like this, El Guapo, you need only look up at the sky to realize that nature is perfect and wonderful—that in every corner of the world, no matter the hardship or deprivation, beauty exists, and sometimes you simply have to open your heart to see it.

En lugares como este, El Guapo, basta con mirar al cielo para darse cuenta de que la naturaleza es perfecta y maravillosa: de que, en cada rincón del mundo, sin importar las adversidades o las carencias, existe la belleza, y a veces simplemente hay que abrir el corazón para verla.
