Yesterday, taking advantage of the fact that I had no work today and nothing to do, we decided to take a trip through the Montes Municipality of Sucre State. Specifically, we wanted to visit several towns in that area, such as San Fernando, San Lorenzo, Arenas, and Cumanacoa.

Ayer, aprovechando que no trabajaba ni tenía nada que hacer, decidimos hacer un viaje por el municipio de Montes, en el estado Sucre. En concreto, queríamos visitar varios pueblos de la zona, como San Fernando, San Lorenzo, Arenas y Cumanacoa.

We woke up early and had breakfast, then headed to the Manzanares area to catch a ride to our destination.

The fare to Cumanacoa is 1500 bolivars, which is about $2. The trip from Cumaná to Cumanacoa takes approximately one hour.

Since San Fernando wasn't on the main road, we decided to stay in a town called Quebrada Seca. There we had to wait for a car to take us to San Fernando. Because the transport was taking quite a while, we decided to explore the town of Quebrada Seca, hoping a car would arrive.

One of the things that caught my attention is that the Manzanares River flows right past the town of Quebrada Seca. It's worth remembering that this town was one of those affected by the river's flooding. However, I could see that cement benches have been built under the trees and along the riverbanks, with the idea of ​​enjoying the view and escaping the heat of the days.

Una de las cosas que me llamó la atención es que el río Manzanares pasa justo al lado del pueblo de Quebrada Seca. Cabe recordar que este pueblo fue uno de los afectados por las antiguas crecidas del río. Sin embargo, pude observar que se han construido bancos de cemento bajo los árboles y a lo largo de las riberas, con la idea de disfrutar del paisaje y resguardarse del calor del día.

Also striking are the immense trees, the lush green vegetation, and the animals living peacefully alongside the road. There are vegetable and fruit vines for personal consumption. It must be said that these are rural villages, whose residents must travel to larger towns or to Cumaná to do their shopping. In the meantime, they make do with what they have, with what they harvest, raise, or produce.

También llaman la atención los árboles inmensos, la exuberante vegetación y los animales que viven tranquilamente junto al camino. Hay matas de hortalizas y frutas para consumo propio. Cabe mencionar que estos son pueblos rurales, cuyos habitantes deben desplazarse a ciudades más grandes o a Cumaná para hacer sus compras. Mientras tanto, se las arreglan con lo que tienen, con lo que cosechan, crían o producen.

Finally, a car arrived, and we asked the driver to take us to San Fernando. They charged us 250 guaraníes per person, which is about $0.33. It's about a 10-minute drive from Quebrada Seca to San Fernando, so we arrived quickly.

The first thing we saw upon entering San Fernando were the ruins of the church and convent of San Fernando del Rey de Cuturuntar. The convent and church were built by Capuchin missionaries in the 18th century, although some records say it was in the 17th century.

Finalmente pasó un auto y le pedimos al conductor que nos llevara a San Fernando. Nos cobraron 250 bolívares por persona, lo que equivale a unos 0,33 dólares. El trayecto desde Quebrada Seca hasta San Fernando dura unos 10 minutos, así que llegamos rápidamente.

Lo primero que vimos al entrar en San Fernando fueron las ruinas de la iglesia y el convento de San Fernando del Rey de Cuturuntar. El convento y la iglesia fueron construidos por misioneros capuchinos en el siglo XVIII, aunque algunos registros indican que datan del siglo XVII.

Near the ruins is Bolívar Square, which is very well maintained and serves as a meeting place, a place to pass the time. Surrounding the square are the houses and streets that make up this picturesque town.

Cerca de las ruinas se encuentra la Plaza Bolívar, muy bien conservada y que sirve como punto de encuentro y lugar para pasar el rato. Alrededor de la plaza se extienden las casas y calles que conforman este pintoresco pueblo.

Without a doubt, the ruins of the church and convent are the town's biggest attraction. This ruined building, destroyed and abandoned since independence, was declared a National Historic Monument. Due to the earthquake that struck Sucre state in 1997, the walls suffered further damage, and to prevent a possible collapse, MINDUR, the former Ministry of Urban Development in Venezuela, carried out a support project that managed to contain and stabilize what remains of the structure.

Sin duda, las ruinas de la iglesia y el convento son la mayor atracción del pueblo. Este edificio en ruinas, destruido y abandonado desde la independencia, fue declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional. Debido al terremoto que azotó el estado Sucre en 1997, los muros sufrieron daños adicionales, y para prevenir un posible derrumbe, el MINDUR, antiguo Ministerio de Desarrollo Urbano de Venezuela, llevó a cabo un proyecto de contención que logró estabilizar lo que queda de la estructura.

While we were there, we took many photographs of these ruins and were amazed by the large size of the blocks used to build the church and convent. According to local history, most of these blocks were made from materials from the area itself, such as clay, river stones, straw, and manure.

Durante nuestra visita, tomamos muchas fotografías de estas ruinas y nos asombró el gran tamaño de los bloques utilizados para construir la iglesia y el convento. Según la tradición local, la mayoría de estos bloques se fabricaron con materiales de la propia zona, como arcilla, piedras de río, paja y estiércol.

One thing I noticed on this walk is that there are places, which have their own rhythm and their own time, that despite the neglect of governments, maintain their pride in their heritage and their history, and are willing to humbly and joyfully welcome anyone who wants to get to know their town.
