These days, I wanted to go to the movies, but I was so unlucky that there wasn't a movie playing that I liked, and to take advantage of being in the area, I went for a walk along the entire Perimetral Avenue, specifically along the old Av. Cristóbal Colón, renamed Casique Maraguey and known to everyone as the Monument area.

Estos días quería ir al cine, pero tuve muy mala suerte de que no hubiera ninguna película que me gustara, y para aprovechar que estaba por la zona, salí a caminar por toda la Avenida Perimetral, específicamente por la antigua Av. Cristóbal Colón, rebautizada como Casique Maragüey y conocida por todos como la zona del Monumento.

I passed by the Hernán Marín Amphitheater, but since it was quite empty, we decided to keep going. This is a relatively new place, built in honor of the singer-songwriter from Cumaná, Hernán Marín, and it's perfect for relaxing and spending the afternoon. I noticed there are seats everywhere and some very interesting sculptures. This place definitely deserves its own post, so I'll come back to it later when I have more time.

Pasé por el Anfiteatro Hernán Marín, pero como estaba bastante vacío, decidimos seguir adelante. Es un lugar relativamente nuevo, construido en honor al cantautor cumanés Hernán Marín, y es perfecto para relajarse y pasar la tarde. Me di cuenta de que hay asientos por todas partes y algunas esculturas muy interesantes. Este lugar sin duda merece una publicación aparte, así que volveré a hablar de él más adelante cuando tenga más tiempo.

The good thing is that there are always places to park in this area. If you bring your own car, you can park in the large spaces designed for this purpose.

Lo bueno es que siempre hay dónde estacionar en esta zona. Si vienes en tu carro, puedes aparcarlo en las amplias plazas habilitadas para ello.

It's incredible not only the scent of the sea carried on the breeze, but also the sound the waves make as they crash against the rocks. Like that eternal love between sea and shore, we hear the roar and then a trail of foam that soaks the stones, and although no one swims on this beach, the joy of seeing the vast sea so close is enough.

Es increíble no solo el aroma del mar que trae la brisa, sino también el sonido de las olas al chocar contra las rocas. Como ese amor eterno entre el mar y la orilla, oímos el rugido y luego una estela de espuma que empapa las piedras, y aunque nadie nada en esta playa, la alegría de contemplar el vasto mar tan de cerca es suficiente.

One of the things that pleasantly caught my attention as I walked along was the noticeable increase in new spaces for relaxing, strolling, and exercising. There are many new areas, tastefully designed and in keeping with the marine environment. These include modern paddle tennis courts, parks for exercise, and thatched-roof gazebos perfect for watching the sunset and taking photos as evening falls.

Una de las cosas que me llamó gratamente la atención durante mi paseo fue el notable aumento de nuevos espacios para relajarse, pasear y hacer ejercicio. Hay muchas áreas nuevas, diseñadas con buen gusto y en armonía con el entorno marino. Entre ellas se incluyen modernas canchas de pádel, parques para hacer ejercicio y churuatas con techo de paja, perfectos para contemplar la puesta de sol y tomar fotos al atardecer.

The walkways deserve special mention. They're made with materials perfectly suited to withstand sea salt, beach sand, and the test of time. Not to mention, the design is beautiful and visually appealing.

Las pasarelas de piedra merecen una mención especial. Están construidas con materiales perfectamente adecuados para resistir la sal marina, la arena de la playa y el paso del tiempo. Además, su diseño es hermoso y visualmente atractivo.

Since the idea was to walk and admire the scenery, we strolled along the sidewalks of the long avenue, taking our time, with the sea on one side and residential buildings on the other, their windows reflecting the sun's rays as if they were a mirror.

Como la idea era pasear y admirar el paisaje, recorrimos tranquilamente las aceras de la larga avenida, con el mar a un lado y los edificios residenciales al otro, cuyas ventanas reflejaban los rayos del sol como si fueran un espejo.

The popular Monument area has always been a perfect spot for people to work out, exercise, and meet up with friends. It's not uncommon to see people in athletic wear, people walking their pets, children on their bikes, and couples enjoying the afternoon. At night, cars park along the avenue, and sometimes there's music, drinks, and food.

La popular zona de Monumento siempre ha sido un lugar ideal para hacer ejercicio y reunirse con amigos. Es común ver gente con ropa deportiva, paseando a sus mascotas, niños en bicicleta y parejas disfrutando de la tarde. Por la noche, los carros se estacionan a lo largo de la avenida y, a veces, hay música, bebidas y comida.

To commemorate Cumaná's 500th anniversary, a monument was built, which initially had its detractors, but over time, the citizens have learned to appreciate it. However, it is not this imposing structure, designed by engineer Carlos Prada, that gives this area its name, but rather the large sculpture of a monk or friar and a cacique or indigenous leader, erected in 1965 as an allegory to the founding of Cumaná. The sculptor of this piece was the Italian-Venezuelan Hugo Daini.

Para conmemorar el 500 aniversario de Cumaná, se erigió un monumento que, si bien inicialmente tuvo sus detractores, con el tiempo los ciudadanos aprendieron a apreciarlo. Sin embargo, no es esta imponente estructura, diseñada por el ingeniero Carlos Prada, la que da nombre a la zona, sino la gran escultura de un monje o fraile y un cacique o líder indígena, erigida en 1965 como alegoría de la fundación de Cumaná. El escultor de esta obra fue el ítalo-venezolano Hugo Daini.

That day I had to resign myself to seeing this monument from afar. I remember that they used to let people climb it, but that day there was a guard or soldier who wouldn't allow us to go up. Unfortunately, we were left wanting. I would have loved to climb it and take pictures from the top. I remember that when I was a child, my father used to take us there, and I could touch that sculpture, which, because of our size, seemed enormous to us.

Ese día tuve que resignarme a ver ese monumento desde lejos. Recuerdo que antes dejaban subir, pero ese día había un guardia o un militar que no nos dejó. Por desgracia, nos quedamos con las ganas. Me habría encantado subir y sacar fotos desde arriba. Recuerdo que, de niña, mi padre nos llevaba allí y yo podía tocar esa escultura, que, por mi estatura, me parecía enorme.

As evening approached and the sun began to set, they picked us up. Personally, I would have liked to stay longer, to see the other coast illuminated by the lights, to witness the spectacle of colors the setting sun creates, blushing not only the sky but also the eyes of those who behold it. But we had to leave, while from the moving car we watched as a boat beached on the shore began to fall asleep.

Al caer la tarde y empezar a ponerse el sol, pasaron por nosotros. Personalmente, me hubiera gustado quedarme más tiempo, para ver la otra costa iluminada por las luces, para presenciar el espectáculo de colores que crea la puesta de sol, tiñendo no solo el cielo sino también los ojos de quienes la contemplan. Pero tuvimos que marcharnos, mientras desde el carro en marcha observábamos cómo un barco varado en la orilla comenzaba a quedarse dormido.
