Today you'll join me on a tour of one of the fishing villages on the "other coast" of Sucre state, located on the Araya Peninsula and the birthplace of one of the state's most important poets, Cruz Salmerón Acosta: Manicuare.

Hoy me acompañarán en un recorrido por uno de los pueblos pesqueros de la "otra costa" del estado Sucre, ubicado en la península de Araya y lugar de nacimiento de uno de los poetas más importantes del estado, Cruz Salmerón Acosta: Manicuare.

You can get to Manicuare by land or sea. In this case, I went by sea. I took a boat from the Cumaná maritime terminal. While it's true that small boats or fishing vessels depart from this terminal for Manicuare, I preferred to take the ferry to Araya and from there, a pickup truck to Manicuare.

Se puede llegar a Manicuare por tierra o por mar. En mi caso, fui por mar. Tomé un barco desde la terminal marítima de Cumaná. Si bien es cierto que desde esta terminal salen pequeñas embarcaciones hacia Manicuare, preferí tomar el ferry a Araya y desde allí, una camioneta hasta Manicuare.

That's what I did: I arrived in Araya and took a public pickup truck. One of the interesting things about this area is the landscape. Because it's a region with little rainfall and high temperatures, the land is dry, orange, and very arid, with xerophytic vegetation. So, it's best to wear light clothing and use plenty of sunscreen.

Eso fue lo que hice: llegué a Araya y tomé una camioneta. Una de las cosas interesantes de esta zona es el paisaje. Debido a que es una región con pocas lluvias y altas temperaturas, la tierra es seca, anaranjada y muy árida, con vegetación xerófita. Por lo tanto, es mejor usar ropa ligera y abundante protector solar.

Manicuare has only one main street, so you can't get lost. It also has its central plaza, a church, high schools, a primary school, a cultural center, and, most notably, the house of the poet Cruz Salmerón Acosta, considered the town's most prominent figure, about whom I will write a separate post.

Manicuare tiene una sola calle principal, así que es imposible perderse. También cuenta con su plaza central, una iglesia, institutos, una escuela primaria, un centro cultural y, sobre todo, la casa del poeta Cruz Salmerón Acosta, considerado la figura más destacada del pueblo, sobre quien escribiré una entrada aparte.

Manicuare is a very humble, rural town where fishing is the main source of employment. Being a coastal town, it is battered not only by the relentless sun that seems to beat down on it 24 hours a day, all year round, but also by the salt air. The deterioration of the house walls and the rust on the railings are evidence of the corrosive power of the salt.

Manicuare es un pueblo rural muy humilde donde la pesca es la principal fuente de empleo. Al ser un pueblo costero, sufre no solo el sol implacable que parece estar encima las 24 horas del día, todo el año, sino también el salitre. El deterioro de las paredes de las casas y el óxido en las rejas y puertas de hierro son prueba del poder corrosivo de la sal.

Being a fishing village, you'll find colorful boats along the main street. Many are still in operation, moored to the shore, bobbing gently on the waves as if asleep. But there are also broken, abandoned boats, waiting for repairs or standing as sculptures of neglect.

Al ser un pueblo de pescadores, se pueden ver coloridas barcas a lo largo de la calle principal. Muchas siguen en funcionamiento, amarradas a la orilla, meciéndose suavemente sobre las olas como si durmieran. Pero también hay barcos rotos y abandonados, esperando reparaciones o erigidos como esculturas de abandono.

Like the skeleton of an animal on the shore, you can find ship structures or frames that attract attention because of their large size, their perfect gearing, but also because they are a sign of something that once was, but no longer exists.

Al igual que el esqueleto de un animal en la orilla, se pueden encontrar estructuras o armazones de barcos que llaman la atención por su gran tamaño, su perfecto engranaje, pero también porque son un signo de algo que alguna vez existió, pero que ya no existe.

One of the things that caught my attention is that between the houses, there are paths or walkways that lead to the sea. As you walk along the only one, every now and then, on each of the paths, you see the sea appear, coming and going, crashing against the shores or the patios of the houses.

Una de las cosas que me llamó la atención es que, entre las casas, hay senderos o pasarelas que llevan al mar. Al caminar por el único sendero que hay, de vez en cuando, en cada uno de ellos, se ve aparecer el mar, entrando y saliendo, rompiendo contra la orilla o los patios de las casas.

Manicuare is a picturesque, jovial, and welcoming town, like most towns in Venezuela. That day, we went to a bodega to buy water and were served by a woman who immediately struck up a conversation with us. She was very kind and funny, like most people from eastern Venezuela.

Manicuare es un pueblo pintoresco, alegre y acogedor, como la mayoría de los pueblos de Venezuela. Ese día, fuimos a una bodega a comprar agua y nos atendió una señora que enseguida entabló conversación con nosotros. Era muy amable y divertida, como la mayoría de la gente del oriente venezolano.

Sometimes you think it's impossible to find wonders and beauty in villages as abandoned as this one, but a person's smile, the kindness of the people, their charisma, become the most beautiful treasure some villages possess.

A veces uno piensa que es imposible encontrar maravillas y belleza en pueblos tan abandonados como este, pero la sonrisa de una persona, la amabilidad de la gente, su carisma, se convierten en el tesoro más hermoso que poseen algunos pueblos.

Manicuare is another fishing village in Sucre state, well worth a visit if you're exploring the Araya Peninsula. It may not have the dazzling beauty of some other places, but it feels like a peaceful village, seemingly frozen in time, where sunsets paint the sky in a unique way. It was from this village that the poet Cruz Salmerón Acosta wrote some of his finest love poems, gazing at the blue of the sea and sky.

Manicuare es otro pueblo pesquero del estado Sucre, que bien merece una visita si estás explorando la península de Araya. Quizás no tenga la belleza deslumbrante de otros lugares, pero transmite una sensación de paz, como si el tiempo se hubiera detenido, donde los atardeceres pintan el cielo de una manera única. Fue desde este pueblo que el poeta Cruz Salmerón Acosta escribió algunos de sus mejores poemas de amor, contemplando el azul del mar y del cielo.
