Zinia is a flowering plant from the Asteraceae family known for its colorful and long-lasting flowers. This plant originates from Central America and Mexico, but is now widely cultivated in various countries as an ornamental plant for hive friends.

Characteristics of Zinia

  1. Flower Shape: Zinia flowers are shaped like buttons with tightly arranged petals. Flower colors vary, including red, yellow, purple, pink, orange, and white.

  2. Stem: The stem is upright, hairy, and can reach a height of 30–100 cm depending on the type.

  3. Leaves: The leaves are oval or oblong with a rough and slightly hairy surface.

  4. Type of Plant: Includes annual plants that grow quickly and flower within a short time after being planted.

Types of Zinia

  1. Zinnia elegans – The most common type, with large flowers and a variety of colors.

  2. Zinnia angustifolia – The leaves are narrower, the flowers are smaller, but are more resistant to hot and dry weather.

  3. Zinnia haageana – Smaller flowers with unique color combinations.

How to Plant and Care for Zinnia

Soil: Requires fertile, loose, and well-drained soil.

Light: Requires full sunlight for maximum flowering.

Watering: Water sufficiently, not too much so that the roots do not rot.

Fertilization: Provide NPK fertilizer to support growth and flowering.

Pruning: Remove wilted flowers so that the plant remains productive in flowering.

Zinnia is often used to beautify gardens, yards, or as cut flowers because of its long durability after being picked. In addition, this plant also attracts butterflies and bees, helping in pollination of all hive friends.
