Raising children's awareness of the environment

Hello everyone, for those who don't know I work with 4 and 5 year olds. Today we had a super fun morning. We were cleaning the enchanted forest of our kindergarten, which was already full of garbage. We placed the sticks and pine cones on the edge of a tree trunk so that Mr. António could take them in his tractor.

• Raising children's awareness of the environment
  Primary education is a key stage in the development of behavior, social awareness and solidarity. At school, we learn values ​​and behaviors that will accompany us into adulthood and define us as citizens. Therefore, it is important to promote students' interest in preserving and protecting the environment during this stage.

The objective of teaching environmental education to children is to make them start taking care of nature as part of their lives, instead of just studying it. This discipline seeks for children to develop a strong ecological mindset to face current environmental challenges through participation and commitment.

• Environmental teaching methods for children
  Environmental education is a lifelong process that should be included both in the educational program of schools and institutes and in other activities such as seminars, conferences or lectures. Its teaching in the classroom must be adapted according to the age and maturity of the children and must be, in addition to theoretical, practical, interesting and fun.

Many of these activities can be developed in the schoolyard or in any park in the city. On the street, it is possible to learn not only from plants, trees, rivers, birds or insects, but also from environmental problems such as pollution, gas emissions, energy consumption, recycling, water use, etc.

• The four goals of environmental education for children are:
  . Raise awareness and sensitize them in relation to environmental problems
  . Foster their interest in caring for and improving the environment.
  . Develop in childhood the ability to learn about the environment around us
  . Expand your ecological knowledge, in subjects such as energy, landscape, air, water, natural resources and wildlife.

The education of the new generations is everyone's responsibility, not just the parents. The children of today will be the rulers and world leaders of tomorrow and will have to deal with major challenges – such as global warming or water stress – and make crucial decisions for humanity.
