Fun activities with geometric shapes
Hello everyone, for those who don't know, I work with a group of 24 children aged 4 and 5 in a kindergarten. I'm working with them on geometric shapes, which is very important at this age. With this game, I managed to get them to work on geometric shapes, to distinguish the right hand from the left hand (I asked them, for example, with the right hand to look for a square and with the left hand to look for a rectangle, I also managed to do another very interesting activity that was the one they liked the most, making drawings with geometric shapes. They drew so many things, a traffic light, a house, a snowman, cars, vans, a pancake maker, a stove, a lot of things that I would never have remembered. I love children's imagination , they have a very fertile imagination ☺️
Did you know that learning geometric shapes is the first step towards studying geometry and spatial reasoning? This occurs in the first years of schooling when children are in pre-school education.
Children who acquire this knowledge early are likely to learn more easily in the future. So that teachers can teach geometric shapes to children, we can follow some strategies and activities that will help us in the teaching-learning process.
What is the importance of geometric shapes in early childhood education?
The absorption of knowledge in geometry represents a challenge for many students in different stages of school life. Children start to have contact with shapes through TV drawings and toys from an early age.
When children are in the early years of childhood, they have a high capacity to absorb learning. Although there are many things that take time to settle in the mind, we can help them, as educators and parents, with games and little tricks so that they learn naturally.
This is the case with geometric figures, playing with them children learn to differentiate them and improve their knowledge in a simple and above all, very fun way. With a little patience, the children will remember each of the figures.
What are geometric shapes? A geometric figure is formed from the closure of a space with surfaces or lines. The representation of a geometric element in space or on a plane is also called a figure.
Below, I point out the main geometric figures and ways to present them to children:
- Circle: until the children memorize the shapes, we can call it a ball or even compare it to the sun. In this way, knowing these words, children will associate the round shape with the circle.
- Square: children usually draw houses when they are little. The design format is a good way to assimilate the concept of a square. We can also use, for example, sofa cushions to remind them of the square shape.
- Rectangles: The doors are a rectangular element, so they are an important element to help introduce the concept of a rectangle. Boys will also enjoy associating this shape with truck bodies.
- Triangles: As we talk about drawing houses, the children always draw their roof, which forms a nice triangle crowning their square.
I hope you liked it, see you soon friends ☺️
hola
, me parece muy enriquecedor tu publicación, la aplicare las técnicas de dibujos que nombras con mi hijo para repasar las figuras geométricas gracias
Me alegro que te haya gustado, muchas gracias ☺️
