San Felipe El Fuerte: Exploring the ruins of a city destroyed by an earthquake in 1812 - Yaracuy - Venezuela [Eng/Esp]

Happy day to everyone, dear friends of the community. I hope you are all doing great. There are times when we want to explore places outside of where we live for whatever reason and we ignore the historical places that are close to us. This is something that happens to me, so today I did a little research to find tourist sites where I live. I chose one that was quite close by, made plans with a friend to go, and so, somewhat unexpectedly, we embarked on an adventure. I hope you enjoy it.

Hay ocasiones en que queremos explorar lugares fuera del lugar donde vivimos por cualquier motivo e ignoramos un poco aquellos lugares históricos que tenemos cerca, y esto es algo que me ocurre a mí, por eso el día de hoy hice una pequeña investigación para conocer sitios turísticos donde vivo, elegí uno bastante cercano, planeé con una amiga el ir y así de manera un poco imprevista emprendimos la aventura; espero que disfruten de ella.

The place to visit is San Felipe El Fuerte, a historic park located in Venezuela in the state of Yaracuy. In this park, we find the ruins of an ancient city that were the only thing to survive an earthquake that struck in 1812 and that, in a way, inspire us with memories of what it once was.

As a curious fact, the city of San Felipe (the original one that was destroyed by the earthquake) was founded in 1729, so we could say that it was only standing for a short time, less than 100 years, but this natural disaster only served to strengthen the foundations for the construction of what would become San Felipe after the earthquake. If you think about it, the saying that after the storm comes the calm is true, and this place is a great reminder that there is nothing more relentless than nature itself.

El lugar en cuestión a visitar es “San Felipe El Fuerte”; este es un parque histórico ubicado en Venezuela en el estado Yaracuy. En este parque encontramos las ruinas de una antigua ciudad que fueron lo único que sobrevivió a un terremoto que azotó en el año 1812 y que de cierta forma es inspiración por el recuerdo de lo que fue en su momento.

Como dato curioso, la ciudad de San Felipe (la original que fue destruida por el terremoto) fue fundada en 1729, por lo que podríamos decir que fue poco tiempo el que estuvo en pie, quiero decir, menos de 100 años, pero este desastre natural no hizo más que afianzar las bases para la construcción de lo que sería San Felipe luego del terremoto. Si lo piensan, es cierta aquella frase de que después de la tempestad viene la calma y este sitio es un gran recordatorio de que no hay nada más implacable que la misma naturaleza.

Now, when you arrive at this historic park, they ask you for a small contribution to enter, but, to be honest, it's only about 5 cents, so we could say that admission is almost free. From the outset, they ask you if you want a guided tour or if you prefer to explore the place on your own and at your own pace. We preferred to do it on our own, so we could stop to take photos or rest for as long as we wanted.

Once we went inside, I took out my camera and started taking some pictures while I looked around. I should mention that this wasn't my first time there, but the last time I went I was about 7 or 8 years old, and now I'm 28, so I didn't remember practically anything and it was like I was seeing everything for the first time.

Ahora bien, al llegar a este parque histórico, te piden una pequeña colaboración para entrar, pero, siendo muy honesto, son como mucho unos 5 centavos de dólar, por lo que podríamos decir que la entrada es casi gratis. Desde un principio te preguntan si quieres tener asistencia guiada o si prefieres ir recorriendo el lugar por tu cuenta y a tu ritmo; nosotros preferimos hacerlo por nuestra cuenta, así podíamos detenernos a hacer fotos o descansar el tiempo que quisiéramos.

Una vez entramos, yo saqué mi cámara y empecé a hacer algunas fotografías mientras observaba el lugar. Debo decir que no es la primera vez que iba, pero la última vez que lo hice tendría unos 7 u 8 años y actualmente tengo 28, por lo que no recordaba prácticamente nada y es como si estuviese viendo todo por primera vez.

I remember the first time I went there was on a school trip; there, they told us a little about what had happened in this place, how the earthquake took everyone by surprise; moreover, no one had expected the disaster it would cause, because although there are not many natural disasters in Venezuela and there are low-level earthquakes, this was an earthquake that undoubtedly shook the area in an incredible way.

There are several things to see in this park, including the ruins, which were the first thing I mentioned and perhaps the most striking. Of course, something I didn't mention before is that, as you will see in some of the photographs, the ruins or certain areas have some signs that tell you a little more about the history and also have a QR code, so if anyone is interested, they can scan it and learn a little more about the ruins and what they were like before.

Recuerdo que la primera vez que fui fue por una excursión de mi escuela; allí nos contaron un poco de lo que había sucedido en este lugar, el cómo el terremoto tomó a todos por sorpresa; además, nadie tenía esperado el desastre que causaría, porque si bien en Venezuela no ocurren tantos desastres naturales y hay sismos de bajo nivel, este fue un terremoto que sin duda sacudió de una forma increíble.

En este parque se encuentran varias cosas, entre ellas las ruinas, que fue de lo primero que les mencioné y quizás de lo más llamativo. Por supuesto, algo que no mencioné antes es que, como verán en algunas de las fotografías, las ruinas o ciertas zonas tienen algunos carteles que te cuentan un poco más de la historia y también tienen un código QR, así que, si a alguien le interesa, pueden escanearlo y así saber un poco más de datos sobre las ruinas y lo que eran antes.
