Sublime Sunday - Japan Stories - Visiting the Meiji Jingu Shrine
One of the most serene places of Tokyo is this shrine Meiji Jingu. It was the very first point of visit in my itinerary but due to some reason it did not go as per the plan and at one point I was skeptical if I would be able to visit it or not. But then on the last day I made it happen by starting the day a little earlier then planned and I am glad I did that else I would have missed something fabulous.
The Shrine inside is nothing great but it is about the outer ambiance and the location. It feels completely disconnected from the city even though it's in middle of the city. It's a huge forest area and the Shrine is located within this area. It's Tokyo's largest shrine and also the green lungs of the city. The size of the forest area is almost 170 acres, that's really huge, and the whole area is filled with lush green trees.
A little history about this Shrine. Meiji Shrine is dedicated to the Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Meiji was the emperor who was instrumental in modernizing Japan. It's not a very old Shrine, like the other shrines of Japan. It was built in 1920, so a little over 100 years. In the World War II it was destroyed and then again rebuilt in 1958. This shrine is made of all wood and it's said that no nails are used to built it, so once again marvelous engineering and architecture. It's like a memorial for modern Japan.
With this Shrine built in this area it represents tradition with a mix of modernization standing in the middle of the city. The Torri gates here are huge. Torri Gates are the entrance gate of the any Shrine here in Japan. Each Shrine has one. Then there is a main hall, which is call Honden, which is used for prayers. It's very simple from inside, nothing fancy.
We reached the spot by Taxi, and the taxi can only go till the Torri Gate, from there to the Shrine is a walk, and it's a very peaceful walk, even on a bright sunny day, one can walk comfortably as the trees on both sides gives a nice shade through the path. That's the beauty of this place. As soon as you enter the gate it feels like you are transported into another dimension.
This is the main entrance gate, which is called the Torri Gate

The forest path leading to the Shrine

A place where you can pick up a message for you. There is a ritual for it to be done.

The grounds of the Shrine. Photography inside the Shrine is not allowed.

If I would have not squeezed this in, I would have surely missed something very fabulous.
Thank you for visiting my blog. 👼🏻👼🏻💖💖🌹🌺🌸
