๐๐ฝ๐ปSublime Sunday๐๐ฝ๐ by @c0ff33a - The Underground City of Derinkyu
Cappadocia looks like a Martian land, it's an attractive old town with cobbled streets and wonderful panoramic views. The other famous thing to see here is the underground cities of this region. There are quite a few and some of them are very famous like the Derinkuyu one, which sees a good amount of tourist. Normally these underground cities are excavated till a depth of 85 meters but for visitors it is only allowed to a certain level.
The Derinkuyu city that I visited had 4 underground floors but for visitors only 2 are accessible. These cities are a one structure and still almost everything is found here whatever you think of. Like there is a church, school, a cemetery, stables, cellars, storage rooms and whatever you think of. The guide told us that when the climate would get very harsh like extreme summers or winters, people in those days would come and live here. Or if there is a enemy attack then for protection they would come and hide here. At times they would had to live here for months together 6 - 8 months and hence they needed almost everything for those time and keeping all of that in consideration, these underground cities were built.
No matter whatever the temperature outside is but inside it is 14 degrees constant all through out the year, be it any season and everything is natural, this temperature is not controlled by any machine, it is just the nature's way, which is so very fascinating. There are ventilation systems which regulates the oxygen flow. The entry point is very narrow, and in those times they had it all covered so that the enemy could not come inside.
It's an absolute stunning piece of history, so natural and yet so scientifically designed for survival, and I wonder what we brag about advanced science of today's times. Let me take you through this underground city
This is the entrance room, the ceiling is low, so one has to mind their head and walk
We start going through the narrow passages which go up and down. You cannot stop anywhere, need to keep moving because there is constant people coming in to the cave, and the path are so narrow, so if you stop you are blocking the full way. It's designed in that way so that the enemy cannot come in, even if they would it would be two or three max at a time and they can be easily taken care of.
That's the food storage room. Because they stayed here for months, this was important. They had to bring in everything that was needed because once they were locked in there was no going out.
That's one of the living rooms. Here too they had hierarchies, some parts looked good and big and some were just ok, so it must be occupied as per their rankings and status.
Getting from one room to another
As we pass through different areas of the city.
At some places there are holes from where you can see the bottom floors, now they are covered with glass, but in those times they must be open.
That's the church, if people lived here for long they would need a place to pray.
Walking through other rooms
That's the winery, I guess it was important in those times to have one.
Some places got very narrow and low ceilings, we had to almost crawl it up.
Only a selfie is possible in this place and that too had to be a quick one. We were informed at the time of buying the ticket that if there are any respiratory or knee issues then to avoid visiting it.
Then there is kitchen area
That's the outside of the place.
It's a wonderful experience going through this place. I have seen Palaces, Forts, Big monuments but an underground city has been one of a kind experience. It takes us back in time and one can only imagine what all must be going on in this way of life.
