Today I decided to go for a relaxing evening walk along the Rhein. The Rhein is quite long and there are many places that you can go for a walk. Today's stop is at the small Harbour town of Gernsheim. In the summer there is a huge festival called FischerFest and the places gets pretty packed, but today it is off-peak and there are some people around, but it is quiet and a relaxing atmosphere.
You can actually park up very close to the river and the first thing you see are a couple of local pubs with many people sitting outside enjoying the spring weather. The ferry was already loaded and ready to cross and I made a short video of the crossing here.
Mostly the traffic seems to go in one direction toward Rheinland-Pfalz. I am not sure how much the ferry costs as I have never taken it. Walking around the harbour, there is lots of construction work going on. There are more restaurants with beer gardens but they are not open at this time.
The harbour is still being used to ship freight and a sign said that there are many people employed in this industry here. This was evident as you can see with all the huge containers stacked up. Gernsheim is quite an industrial town and transport hub, although I have come to the outskirts of the town before for strawberry and raspberry picking as there are quite a few farms too.
I continued my walk away from the harbour and down along the Rhein. It is a well maintained and clean path with many benches and sitting opportunities. There are some youths who are taking advantage of this. Alongside the river is well maintained also with all the trees looking freshly cut back so that there are no debris floating in the Rhein.
I pass the canoe launching point and capture some crepsular rays. I do like to capture crepsular rays as they are a great wonder to behold. I am not sure that I would be so keen to canoe in this huge river though.. as I continue my walk, there are many freight barges that pass me by in both directions. The river is very busy with these boats and I can many as I walk. I remember from my last walk there was one every 2 minutes. Today it was a little less frequent, but not far off. This gives you an idea of the traffic on this river.
After a decent walk, I head back to end my walk. However, I made a short detour to search for one of the Dutch fishing ships that were bought in 1913 and are still somewhere in the town. The last photo was my guess that is might have been one of these boats, but I'm not sure.
Have a great day!

I sometimes wish I had the luxury of time to go out and explore places.. but, I know time will tell and I will be able to see things like this very soon.nice shots and nice place you shared.
Thanks, I know that time can be very hard to find and I do struggle myself. I hope you manage to do that soon. :)
Sincerely, it's very hard, but I believe there will be time soonest
My guess was that the last boat must've aged a lot, and it's quite evident in the condition of the boat. It's still beautiful by the way, but 1913 is such a long time
I am thinking the same and there was no sign nearby to confirm it was the boat. I will have another look when I go back.
I'm guessing it has to be it. It's quite a beautiful harbour
Thanks, it is a great place to visit. :)
Oh, it's only now that I've looked at the video that I see that Helene is a ferry. I thought it was a yacht. 🤣
Yeah, it could look that way from the side-on view! 😅
That is really cool. It looks like a very quaint and beautiful area. I think you captured it really well in your photos!
Thanks Bozz, it was a lovely walk and very peaceful. I will try and head back for the festival in the summer for sure. :)
That would be really awesome! I'd love to see the difference between festivals over there and how they are here.
It can get pretty packed with around 1/4 million visitors during the festival and i remember it was like 40 degrees C one time too! lol
Oh dang. I'm not a crowd person, or a heat person, so I don't think I could handle that!
Me too generally. I dont know if I had planned to run or just support some friends running too! 40degrees would kill me.
No doubt! Like 75 to 80 F is my happy place. Anything over that and I am miserable.
Im with you there, now, sunny around 20 degrees C is perfect!
Hola amigo.
Lo bueno es saber donde están esos barcos holandeses de pesca, debe de ser un puerto muy turístico donde van muchos visitante me gustaría mucho conocerlo.
Gran contenido compartes con todos.
Saludos
Thank you my friend, the boats are an interesting part of the story. It is a popular place to visit. :)
This was a nice walk as I can see the place is still quiet. Not only that, got fresh air!
I was curious, no fish directly from fishing boats?
Thanks it was a very nice place to relax. I didnt see any fishing boats, I dont think they have any fishing here anymore. :)
It is looking clearly that it's well maintained and close to nature and walking in such environment is brain candy.
Thanks, it is a lovely place.
Rhein sounds like a calm Place!
Beautiful View around the town...
Perfect... Pretty sure it will boost tourism there even more.
I wonder how much a boat gonna cost you there? Any idea? I always get curious to know prices. Hehe!
Pretty Awesome clicks tho!
Thanks, it is a great place to visit. I dont know the cost of boats here, i suspect alot, although leisure boats are not so popular here, more in some of the lakes. I will try and stop and the best one in Bayern when I next go there. :)
