Where there's a will, there's a way./ Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

Where there’s a will, there’s a way; it’s something I’ve always kept in mind throughout my life, but putting it into practice isn’t always as easy as it sounds. Let me tell you: this weekend I was too discouraged to go out and take photos—discouraged and worried at the same time. The atmosphere in the city is tense because of the prolonged power outages, and thefts have increased.

Cuando se quiere, se puede; es algo que siempre he tenido presente a lo largo de mi vida, pero llevarlo a la práctica no siempre es tan sencillo como suena. Les cuento: este fin de semana estaba muy desanimado para salir a hacer fotos, desanimado y preocupado a la vez. El ambiente en la ciudad es convulso a raíz de los prolongados cortes de electricidad y han aumentado los robos.

So I went to my favorite spot, near Plaza Vieja, to have a coffee and decide what to do—because coffee changes everything. Then a man approached me to give me this caricature he’d subtly drawn of me while I was focused on trying to fix the world. I was amused by how much it looked like me, and, honestly, I appreciated it because it encouraged me to go out onto the street and try to take some photos.

Por eso fui a mi lugar preferido, cerca de la Plaza Vieja, a tomar un café y decidir qué haría, porque el café lo cambia todo. Entonces se me acercó un señor para regalarme esta caricatura que me había hecho sutilmente mientras yo estaba concentrado tratando de arreglar el mundo. Me hizo gracia por el parecido y, la verdad, lo agradecí porque me animó a salir a la calle e intentar hacer algunas fotos.

People look at me suspiciously all the time; obviously, I don’t look like a tourist—maybe an undercover cop or something worse, I don’t know. I say this because of the camera, which is why I decided to put it away and switch back and forth between it and my phone.

La gente me mira con desconfianza todo el tiempo; obviamente, no parezco turista, tal vez policía encubierto o algo peor, no sé; lo digo por la cámara, por eso opté por guardarla e ir alternando entre la ella y el teléfono.

“It’s not a good idea to walk around Havana alone with a camera these days,” a young man who approached me told me. “It’s just a word of advice,” he said.

No es recomendable caminar solo por La Habana con una cámara estos días, me dijo un muchacho que se me acercó. Es un consejo, me dijo.

That’s why I chose not to venture into rough neighborhoods and stuck to busier areas instead, looking for something interesting without putting myself in too much danger.

Por eso preferí no aventurarme en zonas complicadas y me acerqué a lugares un poco más transitados, buscando algo interesante sin ponerme mucho en riesgo.

I hope it won’t always be this way and that, sooner rather than later, everything will return to normal and I’ll be able to walk safely through my city. For now, I’ll proceed with caution. Thank you so much, friends, for your company. We’ll keep sharing soon. Hugs.
