When I'm at a loss for words, I use my camera. / Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

There are things I sometimes need to say, but I don’t always find the right words. So, a lot of the time, I end up expressing myself in another way: through a photograph.

Hay cosas que a veces necesito decir, pero no siempre encuentro las palabras adecuadas. Así que, muchas veces, termino expresándome de otra manera: con una fotografía.

I get my camera ready, make sure everything is set, and head out the door. I don’t always know exactly what I’m going to photograph. I just go out and let the street show me what’s right in front of me.

Preparo mi cámara, compruebo que todo esté listo y salgo de casa. No siempre tengo claro qué voy a fotografiar. Simplemente salgo y dejo que la calle me vaya mostrando lo que tiene delante.

I’ve traveled through much of Cuba taking photos, but Havana has something different. It might be hard to explain, but I think it has to do with its people.

He recorrido buena parte de Cuba haciendo fotos, pero La Habana tiene algo diferente. Quizás sea difícil de explicar, pero creo que tiene que ver con su gente.

I like to photograph those moments when people let their guard down a little. The walls, the gestures, their expressions…

Me gusta fotografiar esos momentos en los que las personas bajan un poco la guardia. Las muradas, los gestos, sus expresiones..

There are also those little encounters that pop up when I least expect them. A passerby, someone who stops to look, an animal that shows up uninvited...

También están esos pequeños encuentros que se me aparecen cuando menos lo espero. Una persona que pasa, alguien que se queda mirando, un animal que aparece sin que nadie lo haya invitado...

And I think that’s part of what I love most about photography. It’s not about going out looking for a specific image, but rather being attentive to what’s happening around you, being aware of the context.

Y creo que eso es parte de lo que más me gusta de la fotografía. Que no se trata de salir buscando exactamente una imagen, sino de estar atento a lo que sucede a tu alrededor, estar pendiente del contexto.
