Turning Adversity to My Advantage./ Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

Greetings, friends of the #blackandwhite community. This past month has been challenging for getting out and taking photos; in addition to the editing process, we’ve had more than five nationwide blackouts, which has made things considerably more difficult. But under these circumstances, I started thinking: what if we turned this setback into an opportunity? So I got to work.

Saludos, amigos de la comunidad #blackandwhite. Este último mes ha sido complejo para salir y hacer fotos; además del proceso de edición, hemos tenido más de 5 apagones generales en todo el país y eso aumenta considerablemente las dificultades. Pero en estas circunstancias entonces me puse a pensar, ¿y si entonces usamos este inconveniente para sacarle provecho? Y me di manos a la obra.

Since I was at my sister’s house during the last blackout, my nephew and I climbed up to the rooftop to try to capture what Havana looks like in the dark.

Aprovechando que en el último apagón estaba en casa de mi hermana y con ayuda de mi sobrino, subimos a la azotea para intentar fotografiar cómo es La Habana a oscuras.

This part of the city (Centro Habana) is densely populated—I’d even say it’s one of the most densely populated areas in the city—but when you look around in near-total darkness, you see very few lights.

Esta zona de la ciudad (Centro Habana) es densamente poblada; me atrevería a decir que una de las más en la ciudad, pero cuando ves en la oscuridad casi absoluta, solo encuentras muy pocas luces.

It might seem like a scene of silence, but nothing could be further from the truth; in that deep darkness, you can hear people talking, waiting for the power to come back on—a hubbub that’s sometimes deafening—and very few houses are lit up.

Parecería que la escena es de silencio, pero nada más lejos de la realidad; en esa profunda oscuridad se escuchan a las personas conversando, esperando que pongan la corriente, una algarabía a veces ensordecedora y muy pocas casas alumbradas.

And my nephew Wisin—who, to keep from getting bored, forces me to get creative—so we did a bit of light painting, because if there’s nothing but darkness, you might as well make the most of it.

Y mi sobrino Wisin, que para no aburrirse me obliga a usar la creatividad, entonces algo de pintar con luz hicimos, porque si lo que hay es oscuridad, entonces hay que sacarle partido.

Don’t even get me started on walking down the street at that hour; sometimes I felt like I was living in a Cuban-style horror-thriller movie.

Ni hablar de caminar a esa hora por la calle; a veces me daba la impresión de estar viviendo una película de suspenso con terror a lo cubano.

Anyway, that’s how we stayed until almost midnight; too bad we couldn’t see the Milky Way, because that would have really been the perfect way to end the day. At least I really enjoyed the experience; I hope there isn’t another massive blackout, but that’s unlikely; in any case, if it does happen, we’ll head back up to the rooftop.

Nada, que así estuvimos casi hasta la medianoche; lástima que no se veía la Vía Láctea, porque ahí sí sería cerrar el día por todo lo alto. Al menos me gustó mucho la experiencia; espero no haya otro apagón masivo, pero eso es poco probable; de todas formas, si así sucede, volveremos para la azotea.
