hen I'm out on the street, I notice something: the city and its people seem to share the same scars, as if they were part of their skin. Havana is an aging city, sometimes neglected, and this is evident in its houses. But I also feel that many people carry that same weight on their shoulders. It's something I've come to realize over time, walking around, taking photos, and talking to people. Today, I'm offering you a series that speaks of textures, cracks, and close-ups full of shadows... and also of its people.

uando estoy en la calle me doy cuenta de algo: la ciudad y la gente parecen compartir las mismas cicatrices, como si fueran parte de la piel. La Habana es una ciudad envejecida, a veces descuidada, y eso se nota en sus casas. Pero también siento que muchas personas cargan ese mismo peso sobre los hombros. Es algo de lo que me he ido dando cuenta con el tiempo, caminando, haciendo fotos y conversando con la gente. Hoy les propongo una serie que habla de texturas, grietas y primeros planos cargados de sombras… y también de su gente.

Planning and Light / Planificación y Luz

There are some places that I always have planned because, especially in the morning, the light and shadows are very interesting.

Other times they happen by chance, and I've been there many times, but I never realized the photos I could take there.

I like to play around with subjects in the foreground, taking advantage of the conditions of the place to create this atmosphere of shadows.
Me gusta jugar mucho con los sujetos en primer plano y más aprovechando las condiciones del lugar para crear esta atmósfera de penumbras.

Witness of the Skin / Testigo de la Piel

And suddenly this man appears, confirming in a way what I had been thinking about the city and its skin.
Y de pronto aparece este señor, para de cierta forma confirmar lo que venía pensando sobre la ciudad y su piel.

Everyday Essence / Esencia Cotidiana

The smells in this city are very characteristic, especially the smell of freshly washed clothes hanging from the balconies.
Los olores en esta ciudad son muy característicos, sobre todo el que sale de los balcones con la ropa recién lavada.

And the classic street sweeper is included so as not to lose the practice.

Time Record / Registro del Tiempo

Will the city continue to age? I think so. Will its conditions improve so that we can enjoy it for many more years? That remains to be seen; for now, I'm documenting everything in my path as a photographic record, just in case.
¿Seguirá la ciudad envejeciendo? Yo creo que sí. ¿Mejorará sus condiciones para que podamos disfrutarla por más años? Eso habría que verlo; por el momento voy documentando todo a mi paso a modo de registro fotográfico por si acaso.

Excelentes tus fotos y tus reflexiones. Concuerdo 100 por ciento contigo. También veo lo que ves en los rostros y los edificios dudas. La Habana es una ciudad de muchos contrastes. Se puede encontrar el mas grande glamour junto a la mas triste decadencia. Una urbe que a veces parece olvidada por el tiempo y por los siglos. Y a pesar de todo eso, no deja de tener un encanto que envuelve a cualquiera, sobre todo a los visitantes foraneos que caminan por sus calles curiosos y ávidos de conocer nuestra esencia.
Muchas gracias por traernos un pedazo de la vida cotidiana de la capital de todos los cubanos.
