’ve always been concerned about violence in the streets, especially when it involves young people, and even more in the times we’re living in here in Cuba. But a few days ago, while walking through one of the city’s most well-known parks, I came across something that genuinely made me happy: it was full of young people gathered there to dance.

iempre me ha preocupado la violencia en la calle, sobre todo cuando se trata de jóvenes, y más en los tiempos que corren en Cuba. Pero hace unos días, caminando por uno de los parques más conocidos de la ciudad, me llevé una sorpresa agradable: estaba lleno de muchachos reunidos para bailar.

Street dancing. And although I admit I don’t know much about that world, what really caught my attention was how they all let themselves flow with the rhythm. The atmosphere felt healthy, light, different.
Bailes callejeros. Y aunque reconozco que mi cultura en esos temas es limitada, me llamó mucho la atención cómo todos se dejaban llevar por el ritmo. Se sentía un ambiente sano, ligero, diferente.

It’s something relatively recent. I’ve been visiting that place for years, and I had never seen it so full of young people.
Es algo relativamente reciente. Llevo años frecuentando ese lugar y nunca lo había visto tan lleno de jóvenes.

There was everything: people skating, riding bikes, others selling paintings or photographs, some preaching the gospel. There was so much movement that at times it felt a bit overwhelming, yet at the same time there was a strange sense of well-being.
Había de todo: gente patinando, montando bicicleta, otros vendiendo pinturas o fotografías, algunos predicando el evangelio. Era tanto el movimiento que por momentos uno quedaba medio aturdido, pero al mismo tiempo con una sensación extraña de bienestar.

Maybe socializing is an essential part of human nature. In any case, I’m planning to go back soon. Most of these gatherings happen on weekends, when they don’t have school. And honestly, it made me glad to see that instead of getting into trouble, they were simply there, dancing.
Será que socializar es parte esencial de nuestra naturaleza. El caso es que me quedaron ganas de volver pronto. La mayoría de estos encuentros son los fines de semana, cuando no tienen clases. Y sinceramente, me alegró ver que, en lugar de estar metidos en problemas, estuvieran allí, simplemente bailando.

Of course I took plenty of photos — how could I miss that opportunity? I stayed for a while, tried some long exposures to capture the movement, and went home feeling satisfied.
Por supuesto que hice muchas fotos, ¿cómo iba a perder la oportunidad? Me quedé un rato compartiendo, probé algo de larga exposición para captar el movimiento y me fui a casa satisfecho.
