aking pictures of a little girl on her birthday turned into quite an adventure yesterday. Melani—that’s her name; she’s the daughter of a good friend—was turning 6, and they wanted some photos to remember the day. The problem: she was terrified of photographers.

acerle fotos a una niña en su cumpleaños se convirtió ayer en toda una aventura. Melani —así se llama, hija de un buen amigo— cumplía 6 años y querían un recuerdo fotográfico. El problema: le tenía pánico a los fotógrafos.

I arrived early at their house, and to my surprise, it all started with her hiding and crying as soon as she realized the photos were for her. “See what you can do,” her mom told me. Well, since kids love to play, I came up with a plan to get her out from under the bed.

Llegué temprano a su casa y, para mi sorpresa, todo empezó con ella escondiéndose y llorando apenas se dio cuenta de que las fotos eran para ella. —Mira a ver qué puedes hacer—, me dijo su mamá. Y bueno, como a los niños les encanta jugar, ideé un plan para sacarla de debajo de la cama.

It ended up with the photographer playing cat and mouse… with me being the mouse, by the way. And the little girl started chasing me all over the house. “What a crazy photographer!” her grandmother said.

La cosa terminó en que el fotógrafo jugaba al gato y al ratón… yo siendo el ratón, por cierto. Y la niña comenzó a perseguirme por toda la casa. —¡Qué fotógrafo más loco!— decía la abuela.

So, little by little, I started to win her trust… and in the middle of the game, I managed to take a few photos of her. Even her sister showed up to give me a little help.

Así, poco a poco, fui ganándome su confianza… y en medio del juego logré hacerle algunas fotos. Hasta apareció su hermana para darme una ayudita.

They made me talk to the chickens, eat chili peppers, chat with the cat… and to top it all off, they almost married me off to the little pig. Well, why am I telling you all this? I don’t think I’ve ever had such a fun birthday.

Me hicieron hablar con los pollos, comer ají, conversar con el gato… y por si fuera poco, casi me casan con la cerdita. Bueno, ¿para qué les cuento? Creo que nunca había hecho un cumpleaños tan divertido.

Her parents were very pleased… and I was happy. In the end, photography is more about people and moments than just pressing a button.

Sus padres quedaron muy satisfechos… y yo, feliz. Al final, la fotografía trata más de las personas y los momentos que de simplemente apretar un botón.
