The Giants on my path. / [Eng/Esp]

Without falling into romanticism, I want to tell you why these trees are so important in my life. I was born in a town called Caimito, just outside Havana — a small, rural place with very good people. By the age of ten, I already had that adventurous spirit that pushed me to go out into the world. For me, “the world” was the nearest town, only about 8 kilometers away. One day, with my father’s approval, I set out alone on a small bicycle my aunt had given me to cover that distance.

Sin caer en romanticismo, les cuento por qué estos árboles son tan importantes en mi vida. Nací en un pueblo llamado Caimito, a la salida de La Habana, un pueblo pequeño, de campo y con gente muy buena. Ya con 10 años tenía ese espíritu aventurero que me impulsaba a salir al mundo. Para mí, el mundo era el pueblo más cercano, apenas a unos 8 km de distancia. Fue entonces que un día, con la aprobación de mi padre, salí solo, en una pequeña bicicleta que me había regalado mi tía, a recorrer esa distancia.

That’s where these five trees come in. Along the roadside, they served as reference points for me. Each one had its own meaning in my childhood mind.

Ahí entran estos cinco árboles, que al margen de la carretera me servían como puntos de referencia. Cada uno tenía un significado en mi mente infantil.

The second tree told me I had completed about 25% of the trip. I would stop there, catch my breath, and continue...

El árbol #2 me indicaba que había recorrido un 25 % del trayecto; allí descansaba, tomaba un respiro y continuaba...

At the third tree — impressive, by the way — and although I can’t say exactly how old it is, I know it’s quite ancient, that’s where I would have my snack. These giants always caught my attention, and through a child’s eyes, they seemed even bigger.

En el árbol #3, imponente por cierto, y aunque no sabría decir con certeza su edad, sí sé que es bien longevo; allí merendaba. Siempre me llamaron la atención estos gigantes y, para la mirada de un niño, lo eran aún más.

When I saw the fourth and fifth trees in the distance, I knew I was close to my destination. They are two enormous ceiba trees, and according to my grandfather, they were already huge when he was a child. So I assume they must now be between 100 and 120 years old.

Al ver a lo lejos el 4.º y el 5.º árbol, todo me indicaba que estaba cerca de mi destino. Son dos árboles de ceiba y, según me decía mi abuelo, cuando él era niño ya eran enormes, así que presumo que deben tener actualmente entre 100 y 120 años.

From there, it was only a short stretch to my cousin’s house. The journey was almost complete. I will never forget these giants that guided me during my adventurous childhood. Yesterday, by chance, I saw them again and took these photos. They’re still there, standing tall. I hope they remain for many more years.

De ahí a la casa de mi primo quedaba muy poco tramo; casi concluía el viaje. Nunca olvidaré a estos gigantes que sirvieron de guía y referencia en mi infancia aventurera. Ayer, casualmente, los vi e hice estas fotos. Allí están, imponentes; espero que por muchos años más.
