The Cuban Carrying His Life on His Shoulders./ Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

Today we’re going to put a face on the streets of Havana, and that makes me very happy because I’d been photographing empty streets and very distant people for a long time.

Hoy le vamos a poner un rostro a las calles habaneras, y eso me hace muy feliz porque llevaba mucho tiempo fotografiando calles vacías y gente muy distante.

But what changed? The processions of the Virgin Marys—La Caridad del Cobre, La Regla, and Las Mercedes—these days the streets are filled with people, and, of course, I’m there to document it all.

¿Pero qué cambió? Las procesiones de las vírgenes, La Caridad del Cobre, la de Regla y las Mercedes; en estos días las calles se llenan de personas y, por supuesto, ahí estoy yo para documentarlo todo.

And many photographers from various countries are coming, all in search of that unique atmosphere of popular religiosity so distinctive to this country.

Y vienen muchos fotógrafos de varios países, todos detrás de esa atmósfera única de religiosidad popular tan distintiva de este país.

In the process, I’m also looking for people I’ve photographed in previous years, and to my surprise, I’ve found a few, but that will be material for another post.

En el proceso también voy buscando personas que he fotografiado en años anteriores, y para mi sorpresa he encontrado algunas, pero será material para otra publicación.

Even at these events, you can’t let your guard down—especially during these complex times we’re living through—but even so, here we are taking photos.

Hasta en estos eventos no se puede bajar la guardia, y más en estos momentos tan complejos que se viven, pero aun así aquí estamos haciendo fotos.
