i, friends, how are you? A little while ago, as I was trying to put together some ideas for this post, I remembered that when I was a kid and would go with my dad to my aunts’ house, he used to ask people all sorts of questions just to strike up a conversation, and that made me feel really self-conscious. If we stopped at a grocery store, he wanted to know what they sold, what time the bus passed by, why there were so few people on the street, and if someone was sitting there drinking coffee, he’d go sit with them.

Hace un rato, cuando trataba de hilvanar ideas para esta publicación, recordaba que cuando era niño y salía con mi padre a casa de mis tías, él solía preguntarle cualquier cosa a las personas con tal de sacar conversaciones, y eso a mí me daba mucha pena. Si llegaba a una bodega, quería saber qué vendían, a qué hora pasaba el autobús, por qué había tan poca gente en la calle y si alguien estaba sentado tomando café ahí, iba él a acompañarle.

A 20-minute trip would take us an hour and a half; after chatting with half of Havana, we’d arrive at our destination, and I’d be plotting to go back alone next time.

Solíamos un trayecto de 20 minutos hacerlo en hora y media; después de conversar con media Habana, llegábamos al destino y yo maquinando para volver solo la próxima ocasión.

Now that I look at myself as an adult, I realize I’ve inherited this from him, because that’s how I am on the street, and it comes naturally to me; I love chatting and connecting with people.

Ahora que me observo ya de adulto, me percato de que he heredado esto de él, porque así soy en la calle, y me sale de forma natural; me encanta conversar y empatizar con las personas.

But it wasn’t always like that; there was a time in my life when I didn’t do that. In fact, when I’d go out to take photos with a friend, I’d ask her, “How do you manage to talk to people?” Street photography has had a positive influence on me, helping me overcome those social anxieties and bring out the best in myself. That’s why I can take street photos and really enjoy the process.

Pero no siempre fue así; hubo una etapa de mi vida que no solía hacerlo. De hecho, saliendo para hacer fotos con una amiga, le decía: "¿Cómo le haces para hablar con la gente? La fotografía callejera me ha influido de forma positiva en borrar esos miedos escénicos y sacar lo mejor de mí. De ahí que pueda hacer las fotos callejeras y disfrute mucho del proceso.
