Incredibly, my elementary school remains almost exactly the same as it was 40 years ago. I say “incredibly” because here we tend to change things a lot over time, but to my surprise, it’s practically unchanged. |

About 50 meters away is the school where I attended middle school. I stayed there for a while, reminiscing about those days and the crazy things we used to do as kids. As the saying goes: to remember is to relive. |
A unos 50 metros está la escuela donde cursé la secundaria básica. Me quedé un rato allí, recordando aquellos tiempos y las locuras que hacíamos de muchachos. Como dice el refrán: recordar es volver a vivir. |
Another must-visit spot, as soon as we got out of class, was the baseball stadium. We’d sit in those bleachers and talk for hours. |
Otro sitio obligatorio, apenas salíamos de clases, era el estadio de pelota. En esas gradas nos sentábamos a conversar durante horas. |
I also stopped by what’s left of the community center. I say “what’s left” because that place has changed quite a bit over the years. |
También pasé por lo que queda del círculo social. Digo lo que queda porque ese sí ha cambiado bastante con los años. |
And finally, I arrived at my neighborhood, where we used to play barefoot in the street. Those were different times. The funny thing is that, even though it’s a small place, most of the neighbors are still the same. People here have a strong sense of belonging. |
Y finalmente llegué a mi barrio, donde jugábamos descalzos en la calle. Eran otros tiempos. Lo curioso es que, a pesar de ser un lugar pequeño, la mayoría de los vecinos siguen siendo los mismos. Aquí la gente tiene un gran sentido de pertenencia. |
Honestly, it felt really good to return to my roots and remember those years. I think it’s been one of the best days I’ve had recently. |
